The World Health Organization says the E. coli bacteria responsible for a deadly outbreak in Europe is a new strain that has never been seen before. (June 2) Read full article >> The lethal E. coli bacteria that has left 18 dead and more than 1,500 sick in Europe is a new strain that experts have never seen before, the World Health Organization announced Thursday. Early investigations suggested the strain was a mutated form of two E. coli bacteria that contained deadly genes, which might explain why the outbreak was so widespread and dangerous. The E. Coli bacteria behind the outbreak in Europe that has left 17 people dead and sickened at least 1,500 others, including a third with kidney failure, is a new strain not seen before, the World Health Organization told the media earlier today, Thursday. Experts suggest the new strain is a combination of two aggressive strains, that we may never find the source, and the real shape of the outbreak is yet to reveal itself. The outbreak has been associated with cucumbers and other vegetables in Germany, although the authorities are still trying to trace the source... The genetic code of the dangerous E. coli bacteria strain that has killed 17 and sickened more that 1,000 was sequenced in just three hours by scientists at BGI, a gene research institute in China. The BGI researchers said the infection is being caused by "an entirely new super-toxic E. coli strain." FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., June 2 (UPI) -- Florida officials say waterways in three counties have excessive levels of fecal coliform bacteria, indicating the presence of human or animal waste. The E.coli bacteria responsible for an outbreak in Europe that has left 18 people dead and sickened hundreds is a strain that has never been seen before, according to the World Health Organization. LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County health officials have found the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease at the Playboy Mansion after 200 people who attended an event there last month became ill. (EMAILWIRE.COM, February 19, 2011 ) Boca Raton, FL --- Water quality is a rising global concern. A quality water system is required to remove contaminations and infectious bacteria from water before it is viable enough to manufacture products. The Sionix mission is to provide customers with water... WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A NASA scientist reports detecting tiny fossilized bacteria on three meteorites, and maintains these microscopic life forms are not native to Earth. Chicken bought at major supermarkets across Canada is frequently contaminated with superbugs - bacteria that many antibiotics cannot kill - an investigation by CBC TV's Marketplace has found. Genomatica's microbes attract the attention of Waste Management, the nation's largest hauler, which is helping the San Diego company move its research along. The sexually-transmitted disease bacteria, gonorrhea, appears to have picked up some human DNA in its genes, researchers report. WASHINGTON (AP) -- Certain packaged and bulk containers of in-shell hazelnuts and mixed nuts made by DeFranco & Sons of Los Angeles have been recalled because they could contain E. coli bacteria.... You can probably imagine what might be lurking in the mattress. Here's a sampling: skin cells, human hair, bodily secretions, fungi, bacteria, dust, dust mites, lint, insect parts, pollen, cosmetics ... and more. A controversial, game-changing claim published in a journal with a reputation some consider sketchy has the scientific community both praising and damning the reported discovery: fossils of bacteria embedded in meteorites from outer space. A NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center scientist, Hoover published his discovery in the March edition of the Journal of Cosmology. (_University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry_) If you have time to quickly swipe your pager or cell phone three times, that would be your best bet to get rid of most of the bacteria. And a simple tissue moistened with saline would do the trick. But if you only have time for a single swipe of a 'dirty' phone - you'd be better off reaching for a disinfectant wipe. Here's a not-so-savory news flash: There are more bacterial cells living in our bodies than human cells. Researchers are learning how the balance of these bugs affects our health, but reaping the benefits of bacteria is not quite as simple as eating probiotic yogurt. That's the gist of "The Good,...
