It reminds me of those horror movies like "The Hills Have Eyes" where someone searches inside the house and it [...] Facebook is launching a "Deals" program allowing members to purchase coupons directly on its site for goods and services, and details indicate how it plans to differentiate the offering in this increasingly crowded field. Hot on the heels of Google releasing its Groupon clone, Facebook has announced it will push online coupons, too, via a new product called Facebook Deals. Unlike its competitors, Deals will show up in your Facebook news feed. Great. More » Facebook today launched its new "Deals on Facebook" service to connect its users with discounts and other deals on products and services in their cities. In other words, it's Groupon for Facebook. But there is a twist. Facebook is targeting its promotions at activities that you can do with your friends. I guess it only makes sense that a social networking service promote social shopping. From the official Facebook blog: > While many Deals on Facebook offer discounts, it's more important to us that you find interesting experiences around you to do with friends. We've worked with partners and local businesses to help deliver the best social activities in your area. And once you've found a deal you like, having the deal on Facebook makes it easy to share, buy and plan with your friends. Facebook Deals is launching in five cities: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, and San Francisco. Presumably it will soon expand, but for now, us Dallasites are among the privileged few. Interesting that the process of clipping coupons has suddenly become the hottest thing in online retail since pets.com, eh? ------------------------ **Follow me on Twitter!** SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook began offering users in five U.S. cities coupons for everything from wine tastings to concert tickets on Tuesday, turning up the competitive heat in an increasingly crowded market. The online coupon market has been exploding in the last year or so. Just look at some of the startups offering this service: Groupon, LivingSocial, Scoutmob, OpenTable, zozi, SCVNGR LevelUp, viagogo, Google Offers and many others. Yelp, the consumer-reviews website, is declining to seek another round of financing and instead has its sights set on going public. Joyce House is thrifty. The self-proclaimed "Miss Coupon Diva" has raised her children and pursued a nursing degree �" pinching pennies all along the way. She says she has not spent her own money on toothpaste, deodorant and other essentials for more than three decades. And, of course, the diva finds discounts and deals on groceries too.
