Pamela McClintock The raunchy R-rated comedy grosses $7.8 million on Friday to come in at No. 2; the mighty "Thor" stays at No. 1, pushing its worldwide total past $300 million. read more It stormed into theaters to the tune of $65 million on opening weekend, and "Thor" continues to roll as the warrior flick has once again nabbed the top spot at the box office. The Chris Hemsworth starring 3D action movie is on pace to garner another $32 million from May 13-15th - pushing the cumulative total up to an impressive $112 million. Landing in the second slot is the just-released Paul Feig directed comedy "Bridesmaids," as the Kristen Wiig led wedding-based film is expected to earn $22 million during its debut weekend in theaters. Rounding out the top five at the box office are Vin Diesel's blockbuster action picture "Fast Five" ($18 million), followed by "Priest 3D" ($14 million) and "Something Borrowed" ($7.5 million). Melissa McCarthy wears a different dress from the rest of the 'Bridesmaids' in the film's poster. Melissa McCarthy will headline this story of a wife who attempts to steal the Stanley Cup for her sick husband. [...] Group-texting app Fast Society is teaming up with Universal Studios, promoting _Bridesmaids_ (which opens today) in-app. If you're unfamilia… _Mike & Molly_ star Melissa McCarthy and Annie Mumalo have sold to Paramount Pictures an untitled pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for McCarthy. McCarthy and Mumalo star in the Judd Apatow-produced _Bridesmaids_, which Mumalo wrote with Kristen Wiig. Lorne Michaels and John Goldwyn produce. The laffer was hatched by McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone (also in _Bridesmaids_). The premise: When your husband is ill and his doctors are out of ideas, piling in the minivan with your pals to steal the Stanley Cup is one way to go. Falcone, Mumalo and McCarthy all came from the Groundlings comedy troupe. McCarthy is repped by CAA and The Schiff Co. **FRIDAY 3 PM:** Early projections based on pre-sales and strong matinees place Universal's Judd Apatow-bannered comedy _**Bridesmaids**_ big at the box office this weekend. Described by the studio as the first R-rated female- targeted laffer, it's looking to open to a $20 million weekend and a Friday gross of $7.5M. That's following weeks of decent tracking that popped dramatically going into this weekend, especially in the' unaided awareness' category. The expected gross is especially impressive because the movie lacks big name stars (_Saturday Night Live_ regular Kristen Wiig leads a cast of TV actresses) and is releasing into a middling but by no means giant number of North American theaters (2,918). MORE Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne in "Bridesmaids." The 'Bridesmaids' star weighs in on movie premiere fashions Jessica Alba shows off her growing baby bump as she spends the day lounging at a pool on Thursday (May 12) in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The 30-year-old actress wore a Tory Burch bikini while spending some quality mother-daughter time with 2-year-old Honor. Earlier in the week, Jessica and Honor played in the sand while visiting the [...] Guess which type of phone made the scene where the bride asks her BFF to be her maid of honor in the movie **Bridesmaids**? 'Bridesmaids,' in theaters today, is full of laugh-out-loud moments. The 'aww'-inducing interludes are well played. But what lingers are the over-the- top, at times grotesque scenes that seem to go on at least five minutes too long and can provoke the kind of eye-covering and cringing usually reserved for films that are not romantic comedies. Staring at a computer monitor at the Paley Center for Media, Rose Byrne is cringing. Dressed down in "utilitarian" jeans and Converse high-tops for what she calls an "anti-fashion day," she's watching David Brent, Ricky Gervais's character from the UK version of The Office, attempt to woo a woman on a blind date. He leads off by making reference to her dead mother's breasts. "Oh god. Oh god. Oh my goodness. Ooooh, myyyy, goodnessss," Byrne coos, her voice descending to a shocked whisper, her hand covering her eyes to escape Brent's humiliation. "Oh my god," she says, peering back. "That's great." After years of dramatic roles, including her Emmy-nominated turn as lawyer Ellen Parsons in _Damages_, Byrne broke into Judd Apatow's tight-knit comedy clique with 2010's _Get Him to the Greek_, where she played Russell Brand's vulgarity-dropping pop star girlfriend, Jackie Q. Now, she's opening opposite Kristen Wiig in _Bridesmaids_ as Helen, a posh and moneyed interloper in Wiig's relationship with her lifelong best friend (played by Maya Rudolph), who one imagines could only encounter Jackie -- or, for that matter, Brent -- with nostrils pinched shut. "I know that girl, and I'm scared of ... Critics are going out of their way to assure their male readers that, despite the title, Bridesmaids is not just a chick flick. Writes Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal "If this is only a chick flick, then call me a chick." Calling it... Or does Priest have enough power to defeat the combined efforts of Thor and Kritsin Wiig at the box office? [...] After six years on _Saturday Night Live_ and many supporting film parts, Kristen Wiig has her first starring role in the romantic comedy _Bridesmaids_, which has been touted as a Judd Apatow movie for ladies. Critic David Edelstein says it's likely to be a hit with both women and men. Review: Kristin Wiig is worth watching, but "Bridesmaids" is bipolar. In comedy, the "bromance" reigns, but "Bridesmaids" does something to redress that imbalance.
