Intel is gearing up a new round of ultra-low voltage processors based on Sandy Bridge that would be an ideal fit for a new MacBook Air. A leak this week has shown a trio of Core i5 and i7 models that would all be faster than the 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz chips on offer now. The Core i5 2557M seen by CPU World would run at 1.7GHz but Turbo Boost to 2.7GHz; the Core i7 2637M and 2677M would run at 1.7GHz and 1.8GHz but scale higher to 2.8GHz and 2.9GHz each.... The investment will enhance the plant's annual production capacity from 250,000 units to 330,000 units and will add a third production shift in the plant. The economist Joseph Schumpeter called it "creative destruction" -- the process by which technological innovation disrupts, and in many cases destroys, old business models, paving the way for new ones to emerge. It was little more than a decade ago that bibliophiles were bemoaning the loss of traditional neighborhood bookstores, crushed by big-box behemoths like [...] **What's the News:** Mammals' increased brain size may have come from long-ago natural selection for a better sense of smell, suggests a new study published today in _Science_. By reconstructing in 3D the skulls of two animals far back on the mammal family tree, the researchers saw that growth of smell-related brain regions accounted for much of the early increase in brain size as mammals developed. **How the Heck:** The researchers looked at fossil skulls of two ancient animals. The 205 -million-year old Morganucodon was a proto-mammal: a reptile with some decidedly mammalian characteristics (it looked a bit mouse-like, researchers say), that is thought to be an ancestor of mammals today. The tiny mammal _Hadrocodium_--imagine a shrew the size of a paperclip--lived 195 million years ago. Fossil skulls of these species are rare, and the researchers weren't about to bust them open to examine the brain cavity. Instead, they used high-resolution X-ray computed tomography to make 3D reconstructions of the skulls, inside and out. Based on the size and shape of the skull cavity, and the impressions left by brain tissue, the researchers could make detailed models of the animals' brains. _Morganucodon_'s ... Snugli teams up with children's décor designer Jennifer Delonge for a cool new collection of baby carriers. **What's the News**: In geologists' traditional view of the middle of the Earth, the solid inner core is gradually growing as more of the liquid core freezes, as the planet continues its billions-of-years-long process of cooling off. But now scientists are suggesting that parts of the solid inner core get so hot that they turn liquid, and that this is all linked to what's happening in the Earth's crust--meaning that our the earthquakes, volcanoes, and plate tectonics that we see are connected to the very heart of the planet. **How the Heck**: Using computer models and seismology data, the researchers discovered that parts of the mantle can become hot enough that heat is forced back into the core, melting "a small fraction of the inner core's surface." They say it's possible that around 1% of the inner core's surface is melting, which is roughly 77,000 square miles. Below the Pacific Ocean's seismically active "Ring of Fire," for example, heat is expelled from Earth's ... International Game Technology was recently chosen by Carson City, Nevada-based Casino Fandango to install sbX Floor Manager in their casino floor. Orders related to the next iPhone are running "several months later than usual," according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The information is said to come from an iPhone manufacturing equipment supplier. Munster suggests that it backs reports that the next iPhone will only go on sale in September, two to three months after Apple normally introduces new models.... **New PCIe SSD features 900GB capacity and 2GB/sec throughput** Texas Memory Systems (TMS) this week introduced its fastest flash memory card to date, the RamSan-70, a PCIe card that is half the size and three times as fast as previous card models. There are model homes. And then there are homes owned by models. Or, in this case, a supermodel. A certain hottie and her handsome hubby have just put their Beverly Hills pad on the... Video truly is the killer app of high-speed broadband Internet access. In fact, it could straight up murder the business models of most broadband providers. Research firm Sandvine reports that the average Netflix streaming user consumes more than one gigabyte of data per day watching videos. On the Xbox 360 game console (and presumably on the PS3, as well), the usage rate is double the average. I'd guess that's because console owners are more likely to have HD televisions that support the highest bit rate video streams. Right now, the heaviest Netflix data usage is happening on wired networks. But what happens when we start seeing phones with 720p or even 1080p displays? Toshiba is already showing a 4-inch 720p screen coming to smartphones this year. There's no wireless carrier in the world that can survive a third of its customers streaming one or two gigabytes per day. And that's just from Netflix. Throw in cloud services from Apple, Google, etc., and mobile data traffic is about to go supernova. Something's gotta give. ------------------------ **Follow me on Twitter!** HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia said on Friday it was negotiating with several chipset suppliers for its future Windows Phone models after deciding to use Qualcomm in its first smartphones using Microsoft's software. Airbus SAS's A350 jet should prove less problematic to build than the Boeing Co. 787 because of advances in producing the composite plastics from which it will be made, said Umeco Plc, which is working on both models. Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona researchers have discovered that Viagra® drastically reduces multiple sclerosis symptoms in animal models with the disease. The research, published in Acta Neuropathologica, demonstrates that a practically complete recovery occurs in 50% of the animals after eight days of treatment. Researchers are confident that clinical trials will soon be carried out in patients given that the drug is well tolerated and has been used to treat sexual dysfunction in some multiple sclerosis patients... Microsoft has announced a deal in the US which will see any student spending $699 or more on a Windows 7 PC offered a free Xbox 360. Any Windows 7 PC is valid for the deal, although Microsoft has recommended specific models as being particularly suitable for students. Purchases can be made online with a .edu email address, or in participating stores with a valid student ID. The console being distributed is the 4GB 'slim' model released last year. The offer begins on 22 May in the US, and is also planned to roll out in France and Canada at an unspecified time. Read more... Researchers from the University of Miami (UM) Department of Psychology participated in a multi-site study to examine different teaching models for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study is one of the first to look at the fidelity of treatment models for preschoolers with autism. The findings are published online in the current issue of the journal Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders. The report concludes the first phase of a four-year project to analyze the comparative efficacy of preschool programs for children with ASD... Reuters - Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co has adequate inventory of most models for the U.S. market but is running short of its high-volume compact Civic just as the summer sales season begins, the company told Honda and Acura dealers in a letter on Thursday. The smallest Range Rover ever has a 380W Meridian sound system, voice recognition and DVD playback. Four-wheel drive is standard, for the moment. DETROIT (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co has "adequate inventory" of most models for the U.S. market but is running short of its high-volume compact Civic just as the summer sales season begins, the company told Honda and Acura dealers in a letter on Thursday.
