Palin shoots criticism toward rapper Common's poetry reading. AV accessory maker Gefen has created a solution for integrating video systems using displays with different native resolutions by introducing the Toolbox HD 1080p Scaler, a breakout box that automatically scales up or down any high- definition signal to the exact maximum resolution of the connected display. The unit bypasses the built-in scalers found in monitors, HDTVs and other equipment that often do an inferior job of conversion, and avoids having to scale all video displays to the lowest-common-denominator resolution for multiple video displays.... COULDN'T THE White House have scheduled a movie screening, instead of a poetry night? Not that there's anything wrong with hosting a poetry night. The daring assault that killed Osama bin Laden has been seen by many as a vindication of the tactic of "targeted killing," which has been used at an unprecedented level in Afghanistan. But Afghan politicians complain that these raids enrage the population, and sometimes get the wrong man. LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Despite the best efforts of right-wing pundits and contradicting earlier reports, controversial rapper Common went through with his White House appearance at Michelle Obama's poetry event Wednesday. Much to the chagrin of the right-wing, Obama's plan to install a global caliphate new world order via hip hop infused poetry failed to work. The Grammy-winning hip-hop stalwart Common was one of several artists who celebrated poetry and the spoken word before an audience of dozens of high- schoolers, President Obama and the first lady. [...] This week the folks at Fox News have been up in arms about the fact that Michelle Obama invited Common to attend a poetry reading with her. Naturally, the network mischaracterized pretty much everything while reporting on the issue, so on tonight's _Daily Show_, Jon Stewart tried to put it all back into perspective. More » ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Without mention of controversy surrounding Common's performance, President Obama welcomed an audience to the White House poetry night, revealing that he, too, considers himself a poet. Hoping to distance myself from the nattering nabobs of negativism (Lakers fans), I hop a train to Anaheim, namely the Angels Express -- seven bucks, round trip from L.A.'s Union Station. You can't buy a gallon of gas for that. Well, almost. Mrs. Obama invites rapper Common to poetry night at the White House and some think he's a bad example for children. The controversy over rapper Common's appearance at the White House has triggered some kind of psychotic hate reaction in the right wing's collective id. Four hours after our first post, I went back to that Fox News article -- and Fox's audience is still ranting and spewing away, finding creative misspellings for racial slurs so they can get past Fox's automatic comment filters. There are almost 3500 comments in the thread now. Keyboards and mice have been the traditional input devices for a lot of computer users. Recently, though, touchscreens and other devices are gaining in popularity. Here are a few more interesting examples of ways to interact with computers. * A Microsoft researcher has collected a historical gallery of devices such as pen inputs, trackballs, joysticks, etc. This isn't an exhaustive collection of input devices, but it includes some interesting artifacts -- like the OrbiTouch. [url] * A bunch of "mixed reality" interfaces have been demonstrated where the user interacts with objects while a vision system (or some other collection of sensors) tries to interpret the actions as user input. Basically, just imagine combining Kinect with random common objects... [url] * An artist has created a video game where the players use their tongues to control a virtual bowling ball. This "French kissing" interface probably has a bit of an "eww" factor for most gamers -- but maybe there are applications for quadriplegics. I was deeply touched by Jon Canter's article (My sister wanted a godless funeral. But still invited God, 10 May). As an Anglican priest I have frequently taken funerals of people whose relation to church was at best nominal. He rightly recognises the need for meaningful actions, not just on the personal but on the national level. Something that allows space for people of all faiths and none to recognise that our lives are about more than the acquisition of wealth and bigger than the sometimes compartmentalised lives we live. Part of my role is as a co-ordinating chaplain of a university in London where I want to seek ways of enabling a diverse population to come together to recognise a common sense of mourning, of injustice, and of celebration. Of course we can light candles, read poetry, share silence, and all of these are good and valuable things to do. However, until we have a national language and a pattern for doing these things that all can relate to, it is simply not going to meet a very human desire for ritual action that all can take part in. It sounds as if Canter ...
