The Libyan rebels, with the backing of NATO air power and massive international pressure on Qaddafi, are having a hard time holding any town west of their base in Benghazi. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- An unmanned Delta 4 rocket lifted off at sunset from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, following a delay because of concerns over winds. It hoisted a satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office. The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) announced the completion of a customized Corporate Travel Executive (CTE) learning program for the North American Delta Air Lines, KLM, Air France and Alitalia Sales organization... Whether it's sell-offs, school repairs or desert rescue, Cameron and co's ability to bungle is proving second to none In the end it was incompetence that did it. The presidency of Jimmy Carter already had countless problems, but one event came to stand for all the others: Operation Eagle Claw, the aborted attempt to rescue US hostages from the Iranian embassy in April 1980. That fiasco in the Iranian desert, which ended in the death of eight US servicemen and which rescued no one, hardened the view of the American people that the man in the White House was simply not up to the job. Carter was ejected from office a matter of months later. William Hague's botched mission to rebel-held Libya is more farce than tragedy: unlike the eight Delta Force men who ended up dead in Eagle Claw, the eight-strong British team of SAS soldiers and MI6 officers, choppered in the dead of night into eastern Libya, suffered nothing worse than a spell in temporary detention and a measure of humiliation. There was more of the latter for Hague himself on Monday, as the foreign secretary had to stand at the dispatch box ... Alarmed by a sit-down protest in a town with a history of labor defiance, army leaders threatened force to stop the strike in the state-owned factory. But they quickly agreed to some worker demands. The groaning industrial looms are cranking again inside the massive Misr Spinning & Weaving Co. factory in this gritty Nile Delta city famous for its textiles. Workers are streaming past army tanks and concertina wire to resume production of cotton and wool fabrics after a four-day wildcat strike. Egyptian president need only remember 1952 to see what happens when the armed forces turn on those in power Egypt's armed forces stand at the centre of the country's drama, urged by pro- democracy protesters to defend them while commanders strive to ensure their status, power and influence are preserved once Hosni Mubarak has gone. As troops in Cairo's Tahrir Square moved against pro-Mubarak loyalists, opposition leader Muhammad ElBaradei called on the army to intervene. The US and EU made clear they wanted to see the military act to maintain order. With veteran intelligence chief Omar Suleiman installed as vice-president, western diplomats say that he and other key figures such as the defence minister, Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, and the chief of staff, Lieutenant General Sami Einan, are resisting pressure from the US to persuade Mubarak to step down before September's presidential elections, as he has now pledged. It could happen if they conclude that Egypt's and the army's interests will be best served by that outcome — but that point has not yet been reached. "These men are all old friends and I would not be surprised if they are able to convince Mubarak that ... Egyptian protesters call for end to Hosni Mubarak's rule and hail 'first day of revolution' Tens of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets today demanding the end of President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule in mass demonstrations inspired by the toppling of the government in Tunisia. The capital, Cairo, was the scene of violent clashes as thousands of protesters from separate demonstrations converged on Tahrir Square, the central plaza. Demostrators waved Egyptian and Tunisian flags, hauled down a billboard for the ruling NDP party and chanted "depart Mubarak" at the 82 -year-old leader, who will face elections later this year. One policeman died in the Cairo violence. There were protests around the country, and two demonstrators were reported to have been killed in Suez, east of Cairo. "This is the first day of the Egyptian revolution," said Karim Rizk, at one of the Cairo rallies. The protests against decades of poverty, oppression and police torture had been declared illegal by the authorities and were met with a fierce response. Teargas and water cannons were fired into the crowd and rocks were hurled into the air by both demonstrators and security forces. "We have taken back our streets today ... Youth activists, Islamists, workers and football fans to hold rallies and marches against Mubarak government Egypt's authoritarian government is bracing itself for one of the biggest opposition demonstrations in recent years tomorrow, as thousands of protesters prepare to take to the streets demanding political reform. An unlikely alliance of youth activists, political Islamists, industrial workers and hardcore football fans have pledged to join a nationwide "day of revolution" on a national holiday to celebrate the achievements of the police force. With public sentiment against state security forces at an unprecedented level following a series of high-profile police brutality cases and the torture of anti-government activists, protest organisers are hoping that a large number of Egyptians will be emboldened to attend rallies, marches and flash mobs across the country in a sustained effort to force concessions from an increasingly unpopular ruling elite. In a move that suggests the uprising in Tunisia may be spreading to other parts of the Arab world, Tunisian activists announced they would be holding their own protests in solidarity with their Egyptian counterparts, while many Egyptians plan to wave Tunisian flags. Parallel protests are also scheduled to take place outside the Egyptian embassies in London and ... LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Thursday's launch of a 23-story Delta IV Heavy rocket, the tallest ever to blast off from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base was successful, officials said. The 235-foot-tall Delta IV Heavy rocket is believed to be carrying a top- secret spy satellite for the U.S. government. The blastoff is expected to shake up nearby Lompoc. Perched in the fog-covered hills of Lompoc north of Santa Barbara sits a massive 23-story rocket ready to blast off from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen.
