As most baseball players did, Tyler Love learned the game from his father and from his friends' fathers. That's how it worked in the Gibbsboro/Voorhees Athletic Association, as in a million other places. The 7-year-olds wore the oversize T-shirts, and the dads taught them how to throw and catch and swing. ABA Journal: > The swing era lasted barely a decade—roughly the mid-1930s until the end of World War II—but it was a golden age for jazz. > > It was the only time that jazz dominated American popular music. Legendary musicians who had helped invent the music—the likes of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, Bunny Berigan and Coleman Hawkins—still were in their prime. And they could be heard everywhere: swank hotel ballrooms, homecoming dances on college campuses, radio programs—but especially at cramped, smoky nightclubs in such musical hotbeds as Chicago, Kansas City and New York City. In those clubs, jazz musicians honed their craft during lengthy jam sessions, where a player might improvise on chorus after chorus of standards like George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm," or on their own compositions or blues riffs made up on the stand. > > But the only people who got to hear their jazz heroes stretch out and work through new musical ideas in those impromptu blowing sessions were those sitting in the audience. In those days, technology limited recordings to a window of only about three minutes, the amount of music that could fit ... Day Two of the four-day Borneo Jazz Festival in Malaysia was a delightful tour of the blending of jazz and world music. Four bands, with Australian jazz DJ Kate Welshman... Let's face it, I haven't been producing as of late.  Like a 3 hitter batting .120, I can't buy a hit and my swing is weak.  This slump I means that I can't hide the fact that this mediocre blog has become an after thought to many (or few depending on your view or ability to [...] It may be unavoidable that constitutional reform is a question of low politics – but there has to be internal consistency The draft Lords reform bill is promised within the next fortnight. Its return to the political frontline is both overdue and inauspicious. It sets off with the drawback of looking like a consolation prize for Nick Clegg after the AV disaster. That makes it easy for Labour (as well as the Conservatives) to obstruct. Ed Miliband is already indicating that without a commitment to a 100% elected upper chamber, it is unacceptable. He should leave room for manoeuvre. But Mr Clegg starts on the back foot. If Lords reform were easy, it would have been done long ago. It is harder now than ever. Most Tory MPs don't care for it while nearly all peers will need their fingers forcibly prising off their delightful bars and libraries. Resistance is hardening; questions are being raised about the rights, at a time of coalition, of the Commons against the Lords. Labour has argued that it extinguishes the Salisbury convention, which gives bills based on manifesto commitments a safe passage. That would make it impossible to use ... The band formed in 1997 and quickly gained attention in its adopted hometown of Austin, Texas. On a new album, its members honor their idol Bob Wills, "The King of Western Swing." There are a lot of different trading styles, but which one is the best in today's volatile market? (AP) — Sen. Herb Kohl's announcement Friday that he won't seek a fifth term put Democrats on the defensive in Wisconsin, a state that swung heavily Republican in 2010 and will be an important part of President Barack Obama's re-election effort. [...] the 76-year-old NBA team owner and department store founder joins four other Democrats who have decided to retire rather than fight to keep their seat. Incumbents tend to be favored to win re-election in Senate races, so the retirements give the GOP more of an opportunity to pick up seats. Though no contenders came forward Friday, the race for Kohl's seat will also serve as a good barometer of the political mood in Wisconsin, a swing state that Republicans swept to statewide gains in 2010. State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said voters are reacting to what he called the extreme agenda of Republicans and was confident Democrats could keep Kohl's seat at the same time the party deals with a potential Walker recall effort and the presidential race. Mark Neumann, a former congressman and losing GOP candidate for governor in 2010, also said he is considering running but had no timetable in ... Filed under: News, R.I.P. January Jones, Fly on the Wall Media Lloyd Knibb, a Jamaican-born drummer who pioneered and, in some ways, engineered ska music, passed away on Thursday, May 12, according to media reports. He was 80 years old. Knibb was a founding member of the Skatalites, ska music's most legendary band and certainly the genre's most influential. They formed in 1964 and were together for just 18 months, initially -- but during that time, they played gigs almost every night and recorded almost every day. Many of those recordings were uncredited or else appear under the name of a specific vocalist from outside the group. But the Skatalites' instrumental recordings are usually what musicologists point to when tracing back the history of ska -- and much of that was due to Knibb's syncopated beats, which were faster than the tempos of the traditional R&B music the band was trying to replicate. In fact, history tells it that the band was really just attempting to recreate American R&B in Jamaica and Knibb -- with his jazz and swing band background -- jazzed up the tempo unintentionally...at first, anyway. I had a lot of fun with the Rolling Stone Top 500 list awhile back, and when I was going through that I also came across the Songs Of The Century, as compiled by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. This is a 365 song list, and as you'll [...] Given the financial stretch Nasdaq and IntercontinentalExchange are making in their joint bid for NYSE Euronext, why not buy BATS instead? KOLKATA (Reuters) - India's ruling Congress-led coalition overturned three decades of communist rule in the swing state of West Bengal on Friday, one of several regional poll victories that could give some respite for a beleaguered Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. A Skywalker Ranch staffer created "The Empire Strikes Bike," a Star Wars- themed, heavily modded classic cruiser bike with loads of Star Wars tchochkes affixed to it in funny and delightful ways: Literally created in a residential garage, the frame, wheels, and crank were acquired directly from an official Skywalker Ranch staff bike. From there it was a matter of accessorizing the bare-bones frame and wheels with pieces found on eBay to give it an Empire spin: fenders, chain guard and skirt guards came from various 1940s cruisers, including a J.C. Higgins Colorflow and Monark cruiser; the springer forks were pulled from a 1960s Sears Spaceliner; the tank combined a '60s Roadmaster body with a Hasbro AT-AT head rigged to "fire" its reciprocating chin guns with lights and sound; Master Replicas FX lightsabers were gutted and re-worked to become the headlight (Luke's) and taillight (Vader's) with lights and sound activated by switches on the lightsaber handgrips; the luggage rack was a modified 1982 Kenner Rebel Transport toy, now with swing-back rear to stow gear; a Hasbro Titanium Series Slave I worked nicely as a fender ornament; finally, the chrome Vader handlebar topper was lopped off ... Blue Jays outfielder making contact in Triple-A, but return to majors may be a ways off Although Merle Haggard's concert at City National Grove of Anaheim on Wednesday night lasted just over an hour, it is likely few in the near- capacity crowd felt cheated.
