Stephen Hawking speaks: In a rare interview, the physicist Stephen Hawking discusses his work, aliens and living with A.L.S. Like Einstein, he is as famous for his story as for his science. At the age of 21, the British physicist Stephen Hawking was found to have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease. While A.L.S. is usually fatal within five years, Dr. Hawking lived on and flourished, producing some of the most important cosmological research of his time. RATING: (POLITE APPLAUSE) DVD Reviews / Genius of Britain "Five hundred years ago," says Stephen Hawking at the beginning of this series, "the Earth was dark, a place of mystery and superstition." Light arrived in the... A revealing look at the Apple boss and a 'cutting-edge' work of popular science have been causing most excitement at busy trade event An inside look into the life story of Apple boss Steve Jobs, a revolutionary book from a rising star of popular science, and a sought-after debut drawing on Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence are among the books causing a stir at this year's London Book Fair. Despite the tough economic times, and worries over the health of the high street, the fair – celebrating its 40th year - is bustling again after the washout in 2010 when the Icelandic volcano kept international visitors away. Former PM John Major's stirring tale of derring-do in the British music hall has been announced, as has The Lennon Letters, coming in the autumn. Meanwhile the tricksily titled iSteve: The Book of Jobs, out in 2012, will be notable as the first biography with which the Apple co-founder has agreed to co-operate. The author, journalist Walter Isaacson, has had the benefit of three years' worth of interviews with the 56-year-old mogul, who remains on medical leave of absence from the company after serious health problems. Ursula ... The Templeton Foundation gave its annual million-Euro prize this week, and _The Guardian_'s science correspondent Ian Sample focused on the religion and science combo more than anything else, even though its recipient says "I've got no religious beliefs at all." Read more on Religiously scientific, or not?… Accepting a £1m prize for spiritual works does not make the astronomer royal a fraud or a hypocrite There are evolutionary theorists who describe scorpion flies as rapists, and Nobel laureate economists who insist that affairs of the human heart are best grasped through cost-benefit analysis. Clever people are, if anything, especially prone to intellectual tunnel vision – recasting every discussion in terms of the one discipline they have mastered, with no regard for how ideas that enlighten in one context often make no sense elsewhere. The proselytising atheists rounding on the astronomer royal, Sir Martin Rees, for accepting a £1m award from an idiosyncratic foundation fall into a similar trap. The stated aim of the Templeton prize is to reward "insight, discovery or practical works" that affirm "life's spiritual dimension", terms which will leave nonbelievers scratching their heads but will seem self-explanatory from many a religious point of view. The biologist and celebrity atheist Richard Dawkins damns Templeton for blurring the line between science and faith in the hope of leeching the esteem of the former. He has made quite a career of treating religious doctrines as scientific hypotheses and then demonstrating that they are wanting ... Awarding the Templeton prize to Rees suggests science is rejecting the advocacy of the likes of Richard Dawkins Richard Dawkins – author of The God Delusion and theorist of the selfish gene – could claim to be the most famous scientist in Briton. Lord Martin Rees – astronomer royal, former president of the Royal Society, master of Trinity College, Cambridge – is arguably the most distinguished. Last year, Dawkins published an ugly outburst against the softly spoken astronomer, calling him a "compliant Quisling" because of his views on religion. And now, Rees has seemingly hit back. He has accepted the 2011 Templeton prize, awarded for making an exceptional contribution to investigating life's spiritual dimension. It is worth an incongruous $1m. Dawkins is no stranger to pungent rhetoric when it comes to religion. But "Quisling" is strong even by his standards. It was originally hurled against fascist collaborators during the second world war. Rees, a collaborator? What was the crime that warranted such approbation? The Royal Society lent its prestige to the Templeton Foundation by hosting events sponsored by the fund, which supports a variety of projects investigating the science of wellbeing and faith. Dawkins and Rees differ markedly ... Usually I don't like all those science-related music videos that spread through the skeptic/science blogosphere, but I think this one deserves the million views it got in just a couple of days. I think I got all the puns, except for the one about Sagan, which I'm not even sure if it was a pun. A Niemeyer arts centre in Asturias, Ferran Adrià's new bar in Barcelona, a stylish retro train and the reinvention of Málaga – Spain is still at the cutting edge of European design ## Art in Asturias In Asturias, Avilés's new arts centre – designed by Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer – opened last week. The building is stunning, with a grand auditorium 26m high, a massive dome exhibition space (currently showing Luz, film director Carlos Saura's exploration of light) and a programme of art, music, cinema and exhibitions. It has involved collaboration with Woody Allen, who is the honorary president of the film centre, and Stephen Hawking, Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho and Vinton Cerf, one of the inventors of the internet, who are all on the centre's international advisory board. Sadly the website (niemeyercenter.org) is only in Spanish at the moment. ## Paramount comes to Murcia It's a long way off completion, but a Paramount Pictures-branded themepark is set to open in Murcia in 2015. The plan for the park was announced last week, revealing that zones will be themed on Paramount movies, such as Star Trek and Mission Impossible, on a site between Mazarrón and Alhama de Murcia, ...
