ACTION galore is expected as the first Paralympics cross country is launched today in Eldoret. Double Deaflympic gold medallist David Kipkosgei is among the elite athletes spicing up the men's' deaf category line-up. Kipkosgei revealed that he will use the event as a build-up for the next years' London Olympics where he eyes to claim the podium finish. "I will be eying nothing but a win here in Eldoret to enable me start my campaign for the Olympics." Kipkosgei said. He said that running before the home fans is a great opportunity to their fans who have been watching them on television. "There is no one here at home who has seen me running because our races are not run regularly. This is one of the salient chances for our fans to meet with and cheer us."He added. Felix Hernandez could end up wearing the home whites at Fenway Park someday sooner than later. The AL Cy Young winner was asked by the BOSTON HERALD about rumors that he's going to be traded later this summer. "I don't … Continue reading -> Afghan officials say demise of Bin Laden will make 'no practical difference' but may prompt US to question why its troops are still fighting there While the Afghan public gave a subdued reaction to the news that Osama bin Laden has been killed, analysts and officials expressed fears that his demise could hasten the end of the huge US-led military and development effort in Afghanistan. "While thrilled to see the removal of the worst enemy of Islam who inflicted irreparable damage to image of Islam and Muslims, my concern is his death becomes the justification for US premature disengagement from the region," one senior Afghan government official who specialises in foreign affairs said. It was a view echoed by Ahmed Wali Massoud, an Afghan politician and brother of Ahmed Shah Massoud, the legendary resistance fighter who was assassinated just days before the September 11 attacks in 2001 on the orders of Bin Laden. "Already the US has been thinking about shifting its policy on the war on terror and there is a risk that the American public will continue to question why their troops are still fighting there now Bin Laden is dead," he said. But ... He is unapologetic in pursuit of his funnyman status Last Thursday evening, amid the throng camping out overnight for the royal wedding, David Cameron sauntered down the Mall and did what he does best. He pretended to be prime minister. Just as he must have done as a child to his own reflection in the bathroom mirror, he addressed the crowds with a dead relaxed, "Hey, don't freak out, I'm just a pretty normal, although obviously massively powerful, guy" assurance. It was all "Where are you guys sleeping tonight?" and "Don't forget to wake up in time!" He was actually doing quite well until he let slip to one group: "D'you know, when Charles and Di got married I slept just over there." Like he thought the fact he camped out to watch a wedding as a 14-year-old boy would lend him just the sort of common touch he so craves. It was classic Cameron. The kind of bloke who turns up for a photo opportunity with some builders at a greasy spoon and laconically orders a salad Niçoise. Just like his allusions to a dated car insurance ad a few days previously, it was ... Torontoist joins the Toronto Star (and me) in endorsing the New Democratic Party for Canada's national election today. In addition to the excellent reasons enumerated below in the Torontoist endorsement, allow me to add that the NDP also has a fantastic pro-Internet platform, promising balanced copyright, fair nationwide Internet access, a neutral Internet, and opposition to the Tory plan to wiretap, surveil and censor the Internet. Only the NDP have any sense of ambition for what government can do to improve our environment, both in terms of a climate change strategy and in possessing an interest for a 21st-century renewable power grid. The NDP's crime policy proposals are realistic, defined, and compassionate. Their immigration policy intelligently addresses many of the issues with our current system, including the opportunity for immigrant families to sponsor a single non-close relative, while still accepting that crackdowns on immigration consultation and updating our professional certification programs for immigrants must remain priorities. Their cultural policies promote homegrown content and recognize the massive return on investment that smart cultural funding can generate. Of the three major national parties, theirs is the only one with internet and technology policies relevant to the needs of modern ... **All investors obsess** about returns. But for impact investors, ROI is an especially tricky matter, because in addition to financial success, they are seeking social and environmental results. **The Classic Example** Impact investors often speak in terms of patient capital--that is, investments that can take as long as a decade to turn a profit. The Acumen Fund is credited with coining the term. Founded in 2001 by Jacqueline Novogratz, a former Rockefeller Foundation executive, Acumen broke new ground with its decision to support businesses in emerging markets with investment capital rather than grants. Unlike other impact funds, which are set up to make money, Acumen, which is structured as a nonprofit, seeks to recoup its investments via payback or exit within five to seven years. The fund has invested $57 million in 55 businesses; some 30 million people have used those firms' goods and services. **The Model Works Best When** 1. The investor sees opportunity in a social or environmental flaw. Impact investors invest in things such as the redevelopment of distressed land and financial services for the unbanked--which have the potential to generate value. 2. The investor has experience as an activist and an investor. 3. The investor isn't ... **Check Your Cape at the Door** Neighborhood kids file into Brooklyn Superhero Supply." />**Check Your Cape at the Door** Neighborhood kids file into Brooklyn Superhero Supply." />**Check Your Cape at the Door** Neighborhood kids file into Brooklyn Superhero Supply." />**Check Your Cape at the Door** Neighborhood kids file into Brooklyn Superhero Supply.'> **Dave Eggers and** Ninive Calegari, the co-founders of 826 National, thought they had found the perfect spot for their drop-in writing center. There was just one problem: The storefront space on Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission District was zoned exclusively for retail. So Eggers, the celebrated writer, and Calegari, a veteran public-school teacher, got creative. They opened their tutoring center--inside a pirate supply store. Opened in 2002, the pirate store--which stocks antiscurvy medicine, eye patches, and mermaid bait alongside computers, desks, and books--has been followed by Brooklyn Superhero Supply, the Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute, and similarly whimsical establishments in five other cities. The organization also provides in-school writing programs, field trips, and other services. All told, it has worked with 24,000 students, many of them from low- income communities, and built a network of 5,000 very passionate volunteers. The idea, says Calegari, is to ... **Leading the Flock** Sheep graze on a newly organic pasture at Fern Road Farm near Philomath, Oregon. The farm is one of two properties recently acquired by Farmland LP.'> **Here's one way** to explain sticker shock in the organic produce aisle. Consumer demand for organic products has grown at a double-digit rate every year for more than a decade, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. And the portion of U.S. farmland that is certified organic: 0.6 percent. That disconnect is what drives Farmland LP, a start-up private equity firm that has an unusual approach to investing in real estate: It acquires conventional farmland and converts it to organic. ... Aaron Ramsey continued his recovery for Arsenal since breaking his leg in February, coming in to start for the missing Cesc Fabregas and popping up with the only goal of the game. Both sides in the campaign claim undecided Labour supporters can yet determine the outcome. Blunkett urged people to vote against AV in a referendum broadcast shown on the major channels. He said: "If you think we should keep one person, one vote, if you think we should keep the system that is simple and straightforward and has stood us in good stead, then please join us by voting no." But the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, said voters should vote yes if they were unhappy with the political system, at the start of a last-minute effort to show that the leadership of the Labour party – including most of the shadow cabinet and all of last year's leadership candidates – are backing the yes campaign. Miliband said: "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change our voting system. The last time we had a nationwide referendum ... Walid Makled, known as 'The Turk', faces trial in Caracas after Hugo Chávez wins diplomatic tussle with Washington An alleged druglord who has implicated senior Venezuelan officials in cocaine- trafficking is bound for Caracas after President Hugo Chávez won a high-stakes extradition tussle with the United States. Walid Makled, currently in a high-security jail in Colombia, is expected to be flown to Venezuela this week to be tried – and some say muzzled – for trafficking drugs through Venezuela's state-run ports. Makled, known as 'The Turk', told reporters from prison that for years he paid senior Venezuelan government figures and 40 military officers, including the head of the navy, to let him smuggle cocaine from the port of Puerto Cabello. Colombia rebuffed US efforts to gain custody of Makled, 44, who promised to reveal all if tried there, and said he would instead go to Venezuela, which asked first. He is likely to be flown to Caracas this week once Venezuelan officials submit documentation guaranteeing his human rights, his lawyer, Miguel Ramirez, told El Nuevo Herald. "Once that has been presented there is nothing more to be done." The imminent extradition prompted laments in Washington at a "lost" opportunity ...
