Nikki Catsouras

Who/What/Where
Nikki Catsouras Crime Scene Photos Haunt Deceased
Why
A tragic event that occurred nearly three years ago continues to disturb a family in Orange County, Calif. Despite every effort, they are unable to move past the tragedy because the Internet will not allow them to reach closure. Actually, the World Wide Web itself is not to blame as much as the morbid and insensitive individuals who hide on its darker side. The events surrounding this story began to unfold on October 31, 2006. On that day, 18-year-old Nikki Catsouras (photo here) fatefully grabbed the keys to her father's Porsche 911 Carrera and walked out the front door of her parents' home. Nikki had been forbidden to drive the sports car, and her judgment on that day will forever remain in question. As a child, Nikki was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Tests showed the growth to be benign; however, she still had to endure radiation treatment which, doctors warned, could cause her to have difficulty with impulse control - issues which may have contributed to the cocaine-induced psychosis that she suffered in 2005. Despite her hospital stay after that incident, Nikki again experimented with cocaine in October 2006. In response, her parents scheduled an appointment with a brain disorder specialist. Unfortunately, Nikki never made the appointment. It will never be known whether the accident was the result of teen disobedience or a lack of judgment caused by her brain disorder. Regardless of the reason, Nikki got behind the wheel of her father's car and backed it out of the family's garage. Nikki's mother, Lesli Catsouras, heard the commotion outside and ran out, only to see her daughter speeding down the road. Lesli immediately phoned her husband, Christos, who called 911. During the call, the dispatcher informed him that a black Porsche had been involved in an accident on the 241 toll road in Lake Forest. Christos' heart immediately sank to the pit of his stomach. According to police, Nikki was traveling at approximately 100 mph when she lost control of the car. She hit a Honda driven by a lone man before tumbling over the median and slamming into a concrete toll booth. The accident was so severe that Nikki was nearly decapitated upon impact (those photos will not be shown here). Her remains were in such a horrific state that the coroner would not allow her family to view her body. The driver of the Honda was transferred to a hospital with minor injuries. He seeks to recover damages in a pending lawsuit against the Catsouras family. As tragic as Nikki's death was, it was only the beginning of a long road of suffering that her family would have to endure. In the weeks that followed the accident, Christos received an e-mail that he assumed was related to his real estate business. However, when he opened it, he was confronted by a gruesome crime scene photo of his daughter and a caption that read, "Whoohoo Daddy! Hey Daddy, I'm still alive." That e-mail set the stage for a wave of harassment which has targeted each member of Nikki's family. In addition, one particularly sick individual took the time to set up a fake MySpace page in Nikki's name in order to poke fun at her death. Within the comment section, one visitor wrote, "What a waste of a Porsche," while another comment read, "That spoiled rich girl deserved it." The release of the nine crime scene photos was traced to two California Highway Patrol dispatchers - Thomas O'Donnell, 39, and Aaron Reich, 30. In response, the CHP sent a letter of apology to the family and suspended O'Donnell for 25 days without pay. According to newsweek.com, Reich quit his job for unrelated reasons. The crime scene photos have since gone viral and can be found on thousands of Web sites. Despite the family's best efforts, they have been unable to have them removed from the Internet. With little remaining recourse, they filed a lawsuit against the CHP for negligence, privacy invasion and infliction of emotional harm. In March 2008, the Catsouras' case was dismissed by a superior court judge who ruled that rights of privacy do not extend to the dead. The court response to the family's appeal is expected on June 1. In the wake of the case's recent media coverage, Russian cyber criminals attempted to exploit the situation by registering a domain name to distribute malware under the disguise of a "video" of the crime scene. According to trendmicro.com, the site in question has been optimized to appear as the first result in Internet searches for "Nikki Catsouras." The malware contains several variants of worms and viruses. Perhaps the site is actually doing the family a favor by luring those who wish to view the video. After doing so, they will surf away with a PC full of computer viruses. Meanwhile, Nikki's parents and siblings have all enrolled in therapy so that they might eventually be able to come to terms with the situation or at least begin travelling the road to closure.

Wesleyan Shooting

Who/What/Where
Wesleyan U. student fatally shot; suspect at large
Why
A Wesleyan University student was shot and killed at a bookstore near the central Connecticut campus Wednesday afternoon, officials say, sparking a manhunt while police cautioned students and staff to remain indoors. Officials didn't identify the victim, but said she was a student who was at the Red and Black Cafe inside Broad Street Books. A gun was recovered at the scene, the university said in a statement. Police cordoned off the area around the bookstore as officers wearing camouflage and carrying automatic rifles walked the streets as onlookers gawked. Officials at the private university notified students and faculty members by e-mail, text and voice mail about the emergency and asked them to remain inside. Middletown Mayor Sebastian Giuliano said he did not believe the public was in danger. "It was focused. This wasn't random from what I can tell," Giuliano said. "Somebody went into a bookstore and fired multiple shots at one person." State and city police did not immediately return calls Wednesday. All campus events scheduled for Wednesday, including its popular Spring Fling concerts, were canceled. Officials at nearby St. Mary's School, a Roman Catholic school with 240 students, ordered a lockdown for about 30 minutes Wednesday afternoon, Principal Kathleen Dutil said. Police arrived and children were dismissed once authorities gave the go-ahead, she said. Middletown, in central Connecticut, has a population of about 48,000.

Clifford Asness

Who/What/Where
Hedge fund manager lashes back at Obama
Why
Prominent hedge fund manager Clifford Asness has struck back at the Obama administration, saying hedge funds had the right and responsibility to hold out on last week's Chrysler LLC restructuring deal. "Managers have a fiduciary obligation to look after their clients' money as best they can, not to support the President, nor to oppose him, nor otherwise advance their political views," Asness, who oversees about $20 billion at AQR Capital Management, LLC wrote in an undated letter. Asness, who made his reputation and fortune in quantitative investing where computer models select stocks and bonds, spoke out days after Obama forced the automaker into bankruptcy protection and called several holdout lenders "speculators." In a rare flash of anger, Obama scolded a small group of holdouts on Thursday and said he does not stand with these people when everyone else is making sacrifices. The secretive and powerful $1.3 trillion hedge fund industry is seething in private. Asness responded more publicly. In a letter, widely circulated on Wall Street and obtained by Reuters, Asness complained that Obama has gotten the industry all wrong and effectively misunderstands what investment managers must do for their clients. "Let's be clear, it is the job and obligation of all investment managers, including hedge fund managers, to get their clients the most return they can," Asness wrote. "If they give away their clients' money to share the 'sacrifice,' they are stealing." A spokesman for the firm said Asness wrote the letter. While Asness said his firm is not involved in the Chrysler matter, he decided to speak out because he is "aghast at the President's comments." Known for writing detailed letters to investors, Asness did the same here. He also worried about the consequences. "It's really a bad idea to speak out. Angering the President is a mistake and, my views will annoy half my clients," he predicted. Still, he felt he needed to respond widely because no one else was. Industry managers are reacting with anger to the President's words and demands, Asness said, but he also said they were buckling to demands. "One by one the managers and banks are said to be caving to the President's wishes out of justifiable fear," he said. As he went on, his tone became ever more insistent.

Judy Trunnell

Who/What/Where
Judy Trunnell dies, was infected with Swine Flu
Why
Judy Trunnell's tragic death seems to have belied the Health Experts' hopes about the Swine Flu pandemic to be subsiding. It is reported that Jude had "chronic underlying health conditions" when she was admitted to a hospital on 19th April. Judy Trunnell was 33 year old pregnant lady. She gave birth to a healthy child before dying. CNN reports that "Dr. Brian Smith, regional director for the Texas health services, confirmed the virus was linked to Trunnell's death and told one CNN affiliate that there was "one death confirmed in Cameron County from H1N1 influenza." As per the lastest Swine Flu update from CDC, there have been 403 laboratory confirmed cases in US. It mentions that "The ongoing outbreak of novel influenza A (H1N1) continues to expand in the United States and internationally. CDC expects that more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths from this outbreak will occur over the coming days and weeks."

Jesusita Fire

Who/What/Where
The Santa Barbara Independent More Reports on Jesusita Fire
Why
The flames are growing above Santa Barbara this afternoon, as a wildfire that seemed to start near Jesusita Trail in San Roque Canyon continues to march its way up the mountains. Wildfire expert and Indy correspondent Ray Ford is with a fire crew about 400 yards from the fire, which has been officially named the Jesusita Fire. He said that it is burning straight uphill, with 40-foot high flames. He said that the wind is starting to blow hard, with 20 to 25 mph gusts, pushing the fire northeast and east into Mission Canyon. He's watching two helicopters attack the fire, and says they are doing a good job of knocking it down. He has noticed a plume coming up from Mission Canyon and believes something may be burning there. But the fire does not seem to be moving back down San Roque Canyon at the moment. According to continual banter on the police/fire scanner and eyewitness accounts, gunshots were heard in the area where the fire started, traffic is currently deadlocked at Foothill Road, residents are getting angry at being turned away from their homes, and evacuations appear to be ongoing. The Santa Barbara School District has just cancelled class and is allowing children to go home early in the event that their homes are threatened. Another report on the scanner suggested that there may have been an altercation regarding a resident and authorities charges with keeping residents out of the Tunnel Road area. Residents are urged to be safe and cautious. The City of Santa Barbara seemed to be issuing a mandatory evacuation order for all residents of Mission Canyon north of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, but that could not be confirmed by this posting. Also, the County of Santa Barbara put out an email that said there are no evacuations ordered. The Independent's copy editor Jean Yamamura, who lives in the area, reports that Tunnel Road is closed at Montrose Place and residents are not being allowed up. The Independent's Chris Meagher was turned around at Foothill Road, but was able to access the area from the east. He reports that the foothill area is "really, really hot," that there are helicopters circling, and that it is "eerily quiet." After making it to the dead end of Mission Canyon, a firefighter told Meagher that the fire was moving due northeast, which is generally away from structures although into very wild hillsides. EVAC CONFIRMATION as of 3:39 p.m.: Contrary to notices from the County Fire Department below that no evacuations have been issued, Indy reporter Chris Meagher has been told by CHP spokesperson Jim Richards that the areas now under mandatory evacuation include Tunnel Road, north of the Botanic Gardens, including Holly and Spyglass. Also under mandatory evacuation are Orange Grove and Valencia roads, also north of the Botanic Gardens, as well as the top parts of Tunnel and Mission Canyon. County Fire spokesperson Dave Sadecki said the blaze is a mid-slope fire burning in heavy brush. Winds have changed and are now blowing in a southeasterly direction. The worry is that such winds may push the fire down the slope. More evacuation notices are expected shortly. Those who live in this general area should stay posted.

Miley Cyrus

Who/What/Where
Miley Cyrus takes celibacy vow
Why
Teen pop sensation Miley Cyrus is insisting she will remain a virgin until she gets married. The singer is dating 20-year-old model Justin Gaston but insists the couple have never had sex. Now in a interview with the Daily Mail, Cyrus is following in the footsteps of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson by publicly vowing to not have sex until she is married. She told the Mail, "I want to keep my virginity until I marry. I was brought up in a Christian family." Asked about the Vanity Fair controversy over some Lolita-like photos shot by Annie Leibovitz of her wrapped in nothing but a sheet, Cyrus chalks it up to growing pains. *** She confesses, "It's hard growing up in the spotlight and I'm changing. I can't be the 12-year-old who just moved to LA for ever. "I'm having a great time doing what I do but I'm also going to stumble and fall. Having my parents close helps. "People mention child performers who have gone off the rails, but there are also stable people like Jodie Foster. She was a child star and look where she is now. She called to give me advice, which was great."

Carrie Prejean

Prejean says racy Web photos posted to mock faith
Why
Miss California says a Web site has posted racy photos of her in an attempt to belittle her Christianity. Carrie Prejean says photos taken of her as a teenager had been released "surreptitiously to a tabloid Web site that openly mocks me for my Christian faith." In a statement, Prejean also says the attacks on her and others who "speak in defense of traditional marriage" are intolerant and offensive. A photo of Prejean wearing only pink panties with her back turned to the camera appeared Monday on a gossip blog. The 21-year-old Prejean was named first runner-up to Miss North Carolina in the Miss USA pageant April 19. Her response to a question about legalizing same-sex marriage may have cost her the title.

Melissa Scott

Who/What/Where
Porn Star Pastor?! Melissa Scott - Barbie Bridges
Why
US televangelist Melissa Scott has confessed to Marie Claire that she once worked as 'Barbie Bridges' in the porn business! According to Pastor Melissa Scott's website, she is a televangelist and a teacher of the University Cathedral in Downtown Los Angeles - but she's done much more than that. Melissa first denied any involvement in the porn industry, saying: "It's definitely a freak show. I've seen a good portion of the stuff on the Internet, and honestly, I almost have to laugh at it." When an interviewer for Marie Claire kept questioning, however, the pastor said: "Okay, I was never an actress in a pornographic movie. So what does that do? You defend that, what else do you start defending?" But, according to Anorak, Melissa Scott really was a porn star, as confirmed by several acquaintances who knew her when she worked the adult-entertainment circuit as Barbie Bridges. Though it's unclear when she adopted the moniker, by 1994 she'd already nabbed a title - Miss Nude CanAm Exotic - under the name. She posed nude, as Barbie Bridges, for Penthouse lensman Earl Miller and famed erotic photographer Suze Randall. At the time, Scott was married to Paul Pastore, who worked for an exotic-dancing agency called Fantasy Creations before launching a porn distribution outfit called Barbie Bridges Enterprises. (Among its titles: Backdoor Diaries and Heidi's High Heeled Hookers.)

Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction

Who/What/Where
Court Throws Out Ruling on Janet Jackson
Why
The Supreme Court is ordering a federal appeals court to re-examine its ruling in favor of CBS Corp. over Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction. The court Monday directed the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia to consider reinstating the $550,000 fine that the Federal Communications Commission imposed on CBS over Ms. Jackson's breast-baring performance at the 2004 Super Bowl. Last year, the appeals court threw out the fine against CBS, saying the FCC strayed from its long-held approach of applying identical standards to words and images when reviewing complaints of indecency. The appellate court said the incident lasted nine-sixteenths of one second and should have been regarded as "fleeting." But last week, the Supreme Court narrowly upheld the FCC's policy threatening fines on so-called fleeting expletives on live television. (FCC v. CBS Corp.)

Robert Schimmel

Who/What/Where
Comedian Robert Schimmel arrested for allegedly beating up his wife
Why
Comedian Robert Schimmel, 59, was arrested before dawn Saturday on a felony domestic violence charge for roughing up his young wife, cops said. The X-rated comedian is known for his off-color humor and his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which he chronicles in his new book, "Cancer on $5 a Day." Cops said they were called to his suburban L.A. home around 12:30 a.m. and saw marks on his wife. He was being held in a Los Angeles County jail on $50,000 bail. Schimmel, who has made appearances on The Howard Stern show, Conan O'Brien and HBO, has had rocky relationships before. He divorced his first wife, Vicki, three times. When his cancer went into remission, he married his daughter's friend, Melissa, who is half his age. David Hasselhoff

Who/What/Where
David Hasselhoff Recovering After Hospitalization for Alcohol Poisoning
Why
Rushed to Cedars-Sinai medical center in Los Angeles over the weekend after suffering alcohol poisoning, David Hasselhoff currently is recuperating. "He's recovering," a source informs Radar Online about the actor's latest condition, adding that his ex-wife Pamela Bach had been staying by his side until 4 A.M. Sunday, May 3. David, who is best known for his role as Michael Knight in TV series "Knight Rider" in 1980s, was found unconscious on the floor of his home in Encino, California on Saturday, May 2 by daughter Hayley Amber Hasselhoff. The source states that Hayley was frightened and kept "slapping her dad's face" to keep him alive. She then called her mother Pamela, who lives 10 minutes away in the Hollywood Hills. The mother-daughter duo then quickly rushed David to Cedars-Sinai. "He was barely breathing when they got him at the hospital," the source reveals. There, the actor's alcohol level reportedly was registered at a staggering .39. "This is about the 7th time he's been taken to a hospital over the last few years with alcohol poisoning. How many visits will it take before he dies?" the source continues telling Radar Online. On Sunday, May 3, TMZ has obtained a confirmation from David's representative Judy Katz, who said the TV star "is fine and well and happy and is celebrating his father, Joe Hasselhoff's 80th birthday tonight at dinner... along with his girlfriend, Kimberly."

Hydroxycut Recall

Who/What/Where
FDA Announces Recall of Hydroxycut
Why
Government health officials are announcing the recall of popular weight loss pill Hydroxycut, after reports of liver damage and other health problems. Food and Drug Administration officials said Friday the manufacturer of Hydroxycut has launched a nationwide recall of the dietary supplement, used by people trying to shed pounds and by body builders to sharpen their muscles. Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients. It accounts for about 90 percent of the market for weight loss supplements, with sales of about 1 million bottles a year. Dietary supplements are not as tightly regulated by the government as medications. Manufacturers don't need FDA approval ahead of time before marketing their products.

Danny Gans

Who/What/Where
Vegas Institution Danny Gans Dies
Why
The Man of Many Voices has gone quiet. Sin City performer extraordinaire Danny Gans—relatively unknown outside of Las Vegas, but a megastar on the Strip—died in his sleep early this morning at the age of 52. His cause of death was not immediately known. While Gans began his career as a pro baseball player, eventually nabbing a bit part in Bull Durham, he has been a Vegas mainstay since 1996 and, befitting his stature, had the honor of possessing the largest freestanding marquee in the world. Last year the headliner, who described himself as a "musical impressionist," capped off 11 straight wins as Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year, and in February moved his routinely sold-out Mirage show to his own theater at Steve Wynn's Encore. "Elaine and I and all of us in the company are devastated at the loss of our brilliant, talented and loving friend," Wynn said in a statement. "One of the most unique human beings and entertainers in the world has been taken from us in an unexpected moment. "A profoundly tragic event that leaves us all sad and speechless. The loss of Danny to his wife Julie, his children Amy, Andrew and Emily, is at this moment impossible to comprehend. We will all try to go on with our lives without our dear friend. At this moment it seems almost impossible."

Jay Severin

Who/What/Where
Severin suspended after illegal alien, swine flu remarks
Why
Conservative WTKK radio host Jay Severin was suspended indefinitely today after making offensive remarks about illegal aliens and the swine flu, sources tell the Herald. Severin was shocked to learn about the suspension, the sources said, as the station had been using those same remarks in on-air promos. Heidi Raphael, a spokeswoman for station owner Greater Media, confirmed Severin's suspension saying the station would have no further comment. "We're going to sit down with the station soon," said Severin's agent and attorney, George Tobia. "I am confident that everything will be resolved and Jay will be back on the air doing great radio soon." The Spanish-language daily newspaper El Diario la Prensa in New York City, reported earlier this week that Severin was using the flu to attack Mexicans and immigrants. "For Severin, Mexicans are 'criminaliens' and primitives who export venereal diseases to the United States," the paper reported. "The shock jock referred to the strain of flu as 'swine-aka-Janet Napolitano flu.' " "That's not the end of Severin's anti-immigrant rants. Immigrants are leeches and their children, he warns, don't speak English, will retard schools, add to crime and spread disease. Amid all of this, Severin has the audacity to state, 'I don't mean to hype the story,' " the paper said. Severin, the afternoon-drive host on WTKK-FM (96.9), declined comment.

Rockville High School

Who/What/Where
Probable Case of Swine Flu Closes Rockville High
Why
Rockville High School is closed "until further notice," officials said last night, because authorities have reported a probable case of swine flu involving a student. Although it is the first school in the Washington area shut down because of the potential pandemic, hundreds of other U.S. schools -- mostly in Texas -- have closed their doors in an effort to stop the spread of the virus, which is believed to have originated in Mexico. Montgomery County school officials planned to alert parents of the closure through phone calls this morning. "A decision was made to close the school Thursday on the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and the Maryland state health department," said Montgomery County Health Officer Ulder Tillman said told reporters last night. "We are taking immediate steps to close the school." Few details were released about the student, who is suffering from symptoms of the virus and is the ninth probable case in the state, officials said. They said the student was last at the school, located at 2100 Baltimore Road in Rockville, on Monday. School officials said they were alerted to the case at about 6:30 p.m. yesterday and said they must gather more information to determine how long the school will remain closed. A news conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today. "We do concur with the decision, it was undertaken after great consideration," said Frances Phillips, Maryland's deputy secretary for public health services. County school officials also learned yesterday that a Takoma Park Elementary School teacher may have been exposed to the virus by her husband, a World Bank employee who was recently in Mexico. The husband tested positive for swine flu in a preliminary screening but has recovered from his illness; neither his wife nor his children, who attend county public schools, have been ill. The teacher agreed to stay home from school, as did the couple's two children, who attend Westland Middle and Einstein High, but the schools remained open, officials said. The teacher and children are expected to be cleared to return as early as today. School officials say there is little risk because neither the teacher nor her children has showed any flu symptoms. Parents at the three schools were notified of the situation in recorded telephone calls yesterday afternoon. Among the students taking the situation in stride this morning was Peter Krogh, a 13-year-old seventh-grader who arrived at Westland with only mild reservations. "I know there's nothing really to worry about," he said. "I guess it's kind of just fear of the unknown."

David Souter

Who/What/Where
Supreme Court Justice Souter To Retire
Why
Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the current court term. The vacancy will give President Obama his first chance to name a member of the high court and begin to shape its future direction. At 69, Souter is nowhere near the oldest member of the court. In fact, he is in the younger half of the court's age range, with five justices older and just three younger. So far as anyone knows, he is in good health. But he has made clear to friends for some time that he wanted to leave Washington, a city he has never liked, and return to his native New Hampshire. Now, according to reliable sources, he has decided to take the plunge and has informed the White House of his decision. Factors in his decision no doubt include the election of President Obama, who would be more likely to appoint a successor attuned to the principles Souter has followed as a moderate-to-liberal member of the court's more liberal bloc over the past two decades. In addition, Souter was apparently satisfied that neither the court's oldest member, 89-year-old John Paul Stevens, nor its lone woman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had cancer surgery over the winter, wanted to retire at the end of this term. Not wanting to cause a second vacancy, Souter apparently had waited to learn his colleagues' plans before deciding his own. Given his first appointment to the high court, most observers expect Obama will appoint a woman, since the court currently has only one female justice and Obama was elected with strong support from women. But an Obama pick would be unlikely to change the ideological makeup of the court. Souter was a Republican appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, largely on the recommendation of New Hampshire's former Gov. John Sununu, who had become the first President Bush's chief of staff. But Souter surprised Bush and other Republicans by joining the court's more liberal wing. He generally votes with Stevens and the two justices who were appointed by President Bill Clinton — making up the bloc of four more liberal members of the court, a group that has usually been in the minority throughout Souter's tenure. Possible nominees who have been mentioned as being on a theoretical short list include Elena Kagan, the current solicitor general who represents the government before the Supreme Court; Sonia Sotomayor, a Hispanic judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; and Diane Wood, a federal judge in Chicago who taught at the University of Chicago at the same time future President Barack Obama was teaching constitutional law there. President Obama's choice has an excellent chance of being confirmed by the U.S. Senate, where Democrats now have an advantage of 59 seats to the Republicans' 40. By the time a vote on a successor is taken, the Senate is anticipated to have a 60th Democrat, as the Minnesota Supreme Court is expected to approve the recount that elected Democrat Al Franken over incumbent Republican Norm Coleman in that state. Souter was a graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He also attended Magdalen College at Oxford University in England. But his academic pedigree was only one reason he had been regarded as a thinking man's jurist and a highly thoughtful conservative prior to his elevation to the nation's highest bench. Once appointed and confirmed, he soon became a "surprise justice." He bucked the expectation that he would join the court's conservative wing — then led by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who was appointed to the court by President Nixon and elevated to chief by President Reagan, and featuring Reagan appointees Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy. The appointing president had been assured of Souter's credentials by the White House chief of staff, John Sununu, who had known Souter as a conservative member of the New Hampshire Supreme Court when Sununu was that state's Republican governor. But when confronted by the ideological debates and partisan landscape of Washington, Souter surprised both Sununu and Bush by aligning himself with the court's more moderate wing, which also included Reagan appointee Sandra Day O'Connor. Later on, Souter became a full-fledged member of the court's unabashedly liberal caucus, featuring yet another Republican, John Paul Stevens (appointed by President Ford in 1975), who remains a member of the court to this day. Souter was unconventional in other ways beyond his ideological independence. He moved to Washington to attend court sessions, but he returned to his beloved roots in New Hampshire whenever possible, including for the court's long summer hiatus each year. Rather than fly home, Souter preferred to drive. He also resisted other forms of contemporary technology and convenience, holding out against the cell phone and e-mail and continuing to write his opinions and dissents in longhand, using a fountain pen.

John Floyd Thomas Jr.

Who/What/Where
DNA finds suspect in old LA killings
Why
The first wave of slayings haunted Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. The killer slipped mostly unseen through the night, preying on older women who lived alone. He raped them and squeezed their necks until they passed out or died. Seventeen women were killed, found with pillows or blankets over their faces. The second wave hit a decade later. There was another series of attacks on elderly women, including five rape-slayings in the nearby Los Angeles County town of Claremont. Again the victims' faces were covered. Even with at least 20 survivors, police never connected the two homicide-and-rape rampages nor solved either of them. The survivors gave conflicting descriptions of the rapist and DNA technology had not come into use. Now authorities say they have used a computer database of DNA developed in recent years to link John Floyd Thomas Jr. - a 72-year-old state insurance claims adjuster who twice has been convicted of sexual assault - to five of the slayings. Detectives also describe him as a suspect in up to 25 more based on the circumstances of those crimes. "When all is said and done, Mr. Thomas stands to be Los Angeles' most prolific serial killer," said Detective Richard Bengston of the robbery-homicide cold case unit. Thomas was arrested at his apartment in South Los Angeles a month ago and charged April 2 with murder in the deaths of Ethel Sokoloff, 68, in 1972, and Elizabeth McKeown, 67, in 1976. He said Thomas' DNA matched evidence found at five murder scenes, spanning both crime waves - the two homicides he is charged with, and three others. Authorities are analyzing evidence in 25 other killings they suspect might be linked to Thomas. Thomas had been working as an adjuster handling workers' compensation claims since 1989 - the year the killings stopped. He was arrested March 31. His steady employment masked a troubled past. He was arrested for burglary and attempted rape in Los Angeles. He was convicted and sentenced to six years in state prison in 1957. Two parole violations sent him back behind bars until 1966. The first wave of rapes began a few years later. The so-called Westside Rapist attacked white seniors. The LAPD questioned several suspects in those slayings. Thomas was not among them. During this period he was employed as a social worker, hospital employee and personal electronics salesman. The attacks appeared to stop in 1978. That year, Thomas was sent to prison on a rape conviction. When he was released in 1983, he moved to Chino - and a killer began stalking older woman again. Over the next six years, Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives would investigate five slayings of elderly women in Claremont, Sgt. Richard Longshore said. During that period, Thomas worked in neighboring Pomona as a peer counselor at a hospital. Detectives now believe the last in this cycle of killings occurred in 1989. "As far as why he stopped, we don't know for sure if he stopped," Detective Rick Jackson said. "Who knows? It could be age-related, we just don't know enough about him at this time." The break came last October, when two officers collected DNA from Thomas as part of an ongoing process to swab registered sex offenders. On March 27, the California Department of Justice DNA Laboratory notified detectives that his DNA matched the evidence from the Sokoloff slaying.

Kelly McGillis

Who/What/Where
Kelly McGillis confirms she's a lesbian to gay website
Why
Kelly McGillis, best known for playing teacher to Tom Cruise in "Top Gun," has confirmed long-held rumors that she's a lesbian, according to an interview on the website shewired. "I'm done with the man thing," says McGillis, 51, who is twice married and twice divorced and has two teenage daughters. "I did that, I need to move on in life. It's a part of being true to yourself. That's been a challenge for me." The Daily Mail says McGillis' sexual orientation was Hollywood's worst-kept secret. (Funny, we thought the worst-kept secret was that Jodie Foster was gay. Or John Travolta. We could go on.) The Popeater.com blog says the announcement crushes "a million middle-aged hearts." The image of Charlie from "Top Gun" batting for the other team? Somehow we doubt that.

Building collapse in Lower Manhattan

Who/What/Where
Five-story building collapses in New York City
Why
A vacant five-story building collapsed in Lower Manhattan Thursday morning, flattening a car and showering debris in every direction. Emergency crews - some using dogs - sifted through the rubble at Reade St. after the 6 a.m. accident. Officials haven't reported any injuries. "It was like 37 train cars coming right by your head," said Nick Palmacci, 24, who lives nearby and was awakened by the booming collapse between Broadway and Church St. Ed Ortiz, 39, works across the street at MacKenzie Doors. "I just came out this door and I seen it crumbling from the top," Ortiz said. "As the windows shattered it came straight down. It was crazy!" Ortiz said the block was deserted at the time of the collapse, which probably saved lives. "Thank God it was early," he said. "By 8 o'clock somebody would have gotten hurt." Bricks were strewn about, a thick brown cloud of dust covered the block and tentacles of wood dangled from the building's shell. The facade peeled away leaving the abandoned floors and stairways exposed. Carpenter Anthony DeRosa said he usually parks in the spot where a blue Crown Victoria was buried in debris. "That car had taken the spot and it got crushed," DeRosa, 45, said. "Usually I wind up sitting in the truck until this place opens. It was my lucky day." Neighbors said the building had been crumbling for weeks. It had recently been outfitted with corner braces, neighbors said. "We said it was only a matter of days," said carpenter Eric White, who also works across the street. "We knew it." Buildings Department inspectors, Con Edison workers and firefighters were still on the scene hours after the collapse. Residents in the area - a few blocks from Ground Zero - were alerted to the accident by an emergency e-mail service called Notify NYC.

fbstarter.com

Who/What/Where
Beware Facebook Phishing Attack!
Why
I don't much use Facebook, so Facebook messages (which appear in my email) are the main thing that prompts me to log in. However, a message this morning, from someone I knew in high school but haven't otherwise spoken to in 25 years, was a bit different than the norm. The message merely said, "Look at this!" and gave a link to "fbstarter.com". I was suspicious already, since it seemed a bit unlikely that this person would have sent me a message, and the message itself was inexplicable. But, I'm on a Mac, and I have good backups, so I decided to visit the URL. It displayed what looked like a normal Facebook login page, but Firefox hadn't pre-filled my login credentials, and the domain was indeed fbstarter.com, which was just strange. Warning bells were going off in my head, so I immediately closed the page. A quick Google search later, and I discovered that Facebook is being used to send phishing attacks. Neither the fbstarter.com nor another domain being used, fbaction.net, are dangerous, but both will try to steal your login credentials so your account can be used to launch future attacks. If you use the same login credentials on other sites, I strongly encourage you to change your passwords as well. I suspect that the initial attack vector was purely through forged email, but once accounts had been compromised, the attacks were launched through Facebook itself; the one I received certainly was. Facebook has released a statement saying that they're blocking the fbaction.net domain from being shared on the site (I couldn't use that domain in a comment to the sender of the message), removing referring content, and resetting passwords of senders so the attackers can no longer access those accounts. None of the coverage I saw mentioned the fbstarter.com domain, so it appears that the attackers can easily tweak the attack. Now the entire situation may devolve into a game of whack-a-mole, as the attackers come up with new phishing attempts and Facebook blocks them. The moral of the story? Be very suspicious of messages you receive on Facebook or from Facebook via email. If they contain links that are at all generic or dubious, verify the message with the sender before clicking the links. And if you follow any links that display a Facebook login page but do not have the http://www.facebook.com/ domain in the address bar, do not log in.

Zodiac Killer

Who/What/Where
Californian Says Father Was Zodiac Killer
Why
In the pantheon of unsolved mysteries, few can top the Zodiac, the shadowy killer blamed for five Bay Area murders in the late 1960s and untold numbers of stranger-than-fiction theories ever since. Add to that roster the tale told Wednesday by Deborah Perez, who announced to a skeptical crowd of reporters and Zodiac aficionados here not only that the killer was her adoptive and long-dead father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, but that she had been present at at least one killing and had even scribbled some of the taunting notes the Zodiac sent to the press and the police. "I was a child and just thought I was helping my dad," said Ms. Perez, a 47-year-old real-estate agent from Southern California. "I didn't know." Neither did the San Francisco police, apparently, until Wednesday morning when Ms. Perez's lawyer, Kevin McLean, called to announce their claims, which were also splashed across the front of Wednesday's San Francisco Examiner. "We'll listen," Sgt. Lynn Tomioka, a police spokeswoman. "Just like everybody else." Claims about the Zodiac's identity are a regular occurrence around the Bay Area, which is still fascinated by a case whose last confirmed murder, of a San Francisco taxi driver, was in 1969, though coded letters apparently from the killer continued to turn up for several years after. On Wednesday, several Zodiac enthusiasts, some toting astrological maps, others with snapshots of their favorite suspects, shouted pointed questions at Ms. Perez. "The police will just laugh at this," said Sandy Betts, an amateur sleuth, who did not buy the story. Ms. Perez said she had been oblivious to the Zodiac case until 2007, when she saw an episode of "America's Most Wanted" about it and started to think her father was involved. But she offered little concrete evidence on Wednesday. Mr. McLean said that Ms. Perez had passed psychological exams — "I know that everybody's going to say she's nuts," he said — and that her handwriting claims had been confirmed by Bart Baggett, an "expert document examiner" from Los Angeles, who, as it happens, is also an executive producer and narrator of a coming documentary about the case. Mr. Baggett did not return calls for comment, but Robert Graysmith, a former San Francisco Chronicle reporter who has written two books about the Zodiac case, said he was doubtful of an "entirely new suspect" like Mr. Hendrickson, who Ms. Perez said died in 1983. Mr. Graysmith said he thought he and other Zodiac investigators had come close to pinpointing the killer. "I believe the case is probably already solved, but I never say never," he said via e-mail. "That's what last chapters are for."

Tupac is alive. We've always heard that the late rapper was hiding on some island somewhere, locked in a studio, recording all the music you've heard released following the years after this death. But, that's all not true. He's alive, and has been hitting the town. TMZ obtained a few photos of the Tupac, alive and well, drinking and have a good ole time at Hand Grenades in New Orleans. (Peep the photo) "13 years after he was shot and 'killed' in Las Vegas ... a man appearing to be 2pac was spotted in a bar on Bourbon Street last weekend," TMZ writes in their blog entry. "We were unable to get any sort of DNA evidence -- but this photo is good enough for us."

Kirstie Alley

Who/What/Where
Kirstie Alley Opens Up About Weight Gain
Why
Actress Kirstie Alley will appear on the Oprah Winfrey show April 30 to discuss her recent weight gain. Alley, 58, lost 75 lbs. in 2005 after becoming a spokesperson for weight loss company Jenny Craig. In 2006, Kirstie appeared on Oprah to show off her newly trim figure in a swimsuit, but has since regained all of the weight. Alley, once a superfit ingenue (see left), has battled huge weight fluctuations for many years, and has also overcome drug abuse. The former Cheers star is divorced from actor Parker Stevenson. In 2008, Kirstie was dropped as the spokesperson of Jenny Craig after having been its public face for three years. She was replaced by actress Valerie Bertinelli, who lost almost 50 lbs. on the diet plan. Bertinelli, 49, then stunned the world by appearing on the April 2009 cover of People magazine in a bikini. Meanwhile, Jenny Craig expressed support for Alley and her continuing weight battle. "Jenny Craig...remains supportive of Kirstie, wish her nothing but the best and we would welcome her back at any time as a returning client," said a spokesperson. Ironically, in 2008, Kirstie vehemently denied rumors that she had gained weight, even threatening to sue tabloids that printed such stories. Sadly, the rumors turned out to be true.

Vern Gosdin

Who/What/Where
Singer-Songwriter Vern Gosdin Dies in Nashville at Age 74
Why
Singer-songwriter Vern Gosdin, who achieved mainstream country success in the '80s with hits such as "Set 'Em Up Joe" and "Chiseled in Stone," died late Tuesday (April 28) at a Nashville hospital at age 74. Gosdin, who was often referred to as "the Voice," reportedly suffered a stroke several weeks ago. Born in Woodland, Ala., he had already achieved success with his brother, Rex, as the Gosdin Brothers before launching his solo career. As a teenager, his family hosted The Gosdin Family Gospel Show on a radio station in Birmingham, Ala. Vern and Rex Gosdin moved to the Los Angeles area in 1961 and began performing in a bluegrass group, the Golden State Boys. The band evolved into another bluegrass group, the Hillmen, featuring Chris Hillman, who later became a founding member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Desert Rose Band. With the demise of the Hillmen, the Gosdin Brothers scored one country hit, "Hangin' On," which peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard chart in 1967. Rex Gosdin died in 1983. In the early '70s, Vern Gosdin moved to Atlanta, where he ran a retail store, but he continued to perform in area clubs. Emmylou Harris, who knew him from their days in California, teamed with Gosdin to record a demo single featuring two songs -- a remake of "Hangin' On" and a new one, "Yesterday's Gone." The demo resulted in Gosdin's contract with Elektra Records. "Yesterday's Gone" became his first single for the label and reached No. 9 on the country chart in 1977. During the late '70s and early '80s, Gosdin charted other Top 10 singles for the Elektra, Ovation and AMI labels before scoring his first No. 1 hit in 1984 with "I Can Tell by the Way You Dance (You're Gonna Love Me Tonight)," written by Sandy Pinkard and Rob Strandlund. After moving to Columbia Records in the late '80s, he quickly scored a series of Top 10 singles with songs he co-wrote, including "Do You Believe Me Now," "Chiseled in Stone," "Who You Gonna Blame It On This Time" and "That Just About Does It." His recordings of two other original songs from that era -- "Set' Em Up Joe" and "I'm Still Crazy" reached No. 1. Gosdin's last Top 10 singles were released in 1990 -- "Right in the Wrong Direction" and "Is It Raining at Your House." In 1989, Gosdin and one of his longtime songwriting collaborators, Max D. Barnes, shared a CMA Award for song of the year for "Chiseled in Stone." George Strait enjoyed a Top 10 hit in 1997 with "Today My World Slipped Away," a song Gosdin co-wrote with Mark Wright. It had been a Top 10 single for Gosdin in 1982.

US Swine Flu Death

Who/What/Where
Govt. Confirms First US Swine Flu Death
Why
A government official confirmed the death from the new H1N1 swine flu on Wednesday. It is the first death from the flu outside of Mexico, which has been the country hardest-hit by the influenza outbreak. U.S. officials have confirmed 65 cases of swine flu, most of them mild. The acting head of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention says the confirmed death of a toddler in Texas is a tragic development, but that it's too soon to say just how fast the swine flu virus is spreading. Dr. Richard Besser said Wednesday health authorities had been anticipating that the virus would cause deaths, and said that "as a pediatrician and a parent, my heart goes out to the family." But Besser said in a nationally broadcast network interview that it's too soon to say if the death in Texas suggests the virus is spreading to more states. Nor would he say whether officials think it will become a nationwide problem. Besser said he didn't believe "this indicates any change in the strain of the flu." Besser also said that "we see with any flu virus a spectrum of disease symptoms" and said authorities need to learn more about the threat. No Massachusetts Cases In the Bay State, two Spencer elementary school students who traveled to Mexico last week were tested for swine flu on Tuesday after they complained of flu-like symptoms to a school nurse. Spencer School Superintendent Ralph Hicks said a nurse at the Lake Street Elementary School called the students' mother after they said they were feeling ill. Letters were sent home notifying parents of the students' symptoms. "They weren't that bad. The nurse said they were mild to moderate, they weren't bad, they weren't serious. It wasn't like we needed to call 911," Hicks said. "I think it's good they're notifying the public. It's a safety issue for everybody," one mother said. The children were taken to a private doctor, who collected samples to send away for testing at a national health center. Hicks said he did not know the ages of the children, but he said they are enrolled between grades 1 and 3. Classrooms the students visited during the day were evacuated and cleaned, along with common areas. Additional custodial workers were planning to clean the school overnight, and a bus company that provides service for the town was also going to disinfect its vehicles, according to Hicks. "Which is probably overkill but we want to be safe rather than sorry," Hicks said. Officials in Lowell were also awaiting test results for two siblings who took ill after they visited Mexico last week. The students began to feel sick while they were still on the trip and did not return to school once they returned, according to Lowell Health Director Frank Singleton. Singleton expected to get the results of their tests from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Tuesday evening. An official from Brockton Hospital who was also vacationing in Mexico last week reportedly became ill and was being tested. An Ontario woman who was on a Boston-bound plane from Mexico Monday reported feeling ill and was taken off the plane and tested. She reported negative for the virus.

David Poole

Who/What/Where
David Poole, longtime NASCAR writer who brought enthusiasm to his craft, dies of a heart attack
Why
Over thousands of backstretches and hundreds of checkered flags, David Poole made himself into more than one of the nation's leading authorities on NASCAR. He became a part of the sport he loved. "David Poole was as much a fixture in this sport as the actual cars themselves," driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Tuesday. "He was a one-of-a-kind individual and an extremely talented writer." Poole, who covered racing for the Charlotte Observer, died of a heart attack Tuesday at his Stanly County home. He was 50. A Gastonia native, Poole became the Observer's NASCAR writer in 1997. He built a national following through ThatsRacin.com and a daily program he hosted on Sirius NASCAR Radio. The National Motorsports Press Association four times named him its writer of the year. He wrote about the sport with the enthusiasm of a fan and the critical eye of a journalist. "He could be controversial from time to time, but he always wrote and spoke what he believed," said Richard Childress, president and CEO Richard Childress Racing. "He didn't pull any punches with anybody and that's what people respected about him. He was good for the sport." To honor Poole, Sirius plans to broadcast a tribute on Wednesday morning. NASCAR plans a moment of silence before Saturday's race at Richmond. "He was truly one of the nation's best and he always wrote what he believed," said Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of Speedway Motorsports. "Whether you agreed with him or not, he made us all think, and that's what the best writers do. He cared about what he did and had a passion for his work. It came through in what he wrote every day." In announcing Poole's death to a hushed newsroom Tuesday afternoon, Observer editor Rick Thames called him "the best in his field, there's no doubt about that." Thames said: "David Poole was the fans' reporter, always covering NASCAR with their sensibilities in mind. Their passions were his passions. Their values, his values. If that occasionally clashed with the powerbrokers of the sport, so be it. David told it like it was. And by doing that, he made the sport richer and more genuine for all who love it." As word of his death spread, tributes poured in from throughout the NASCAR community. "So sorry," a reader named Scott wrote on one message board. "I've been ragging on Poole for years through e-mails and his blog. One thing about him, he would always answer back." "I listened to him every day on Sirius, even this morning, in all his glory ranting, like only David could, about Talladega!!!" Leslie from Arlington, Tenn., wrote. "His honesty and truth were greatly cherished." After dramatic weekend crashes at Talledega — one of which sent several spectators to the hospital — Poole criticized the track's design in a column headlined "Will it take a death for Talladega to change?" "It seems we've decided we can live with that much damage being done to the sport's customers for 'good racing,'" he wrote. "How many people have to be listed in 'guarded' or 'critical' condition before we say that's too much?" Roger Curtis, president of Michigan International Speedway, said Poole "made our sport better by expecting as much out of us as he did himself and, believe me, he was never shy about holding us to his standard."

Shadowhare

Who/What/Where
Cincinnati Superhero Patrols Streets Fighting Crime
Why
Cincinnati police have a new ally in their fight against crime, whether they want it or not. He calls himself Shadowhare, and he wears a mask and a cape to conceal his true identity. He's Cincinnati's own version of a superhero fighting crime and injustice where he finds it. "We help enforce the law by doing what we can in legal standards, so we carry handcuffs, pepper spray … all the legal weapons," said Shadowhare. "We will do citizen's arrests. We will intervene on crimes if there is one happening in front of us." The man behind Shadowhare's mask is 21 years old and from Milford. Those are the only clues to his true identity that he will reveal. Shadowhare said he was abused as a child and grew up in foster homes, perhaps leading him to a life helping others. "My message to Cincinnati is that there is still hope and all we have to do is stand together," he said. Shadowhare is not alone in his quest to fight crime. He heads up a group of men -- and one woman -- called the "Allegiance of Heroes." The members communicate with each other in online forums. Among the members are Aclyptico in Pennsylvania, Wall Creeper in Colorado and Master Legend in Florida. "I've even teamed up with Mr. Extreme in California -- San Diego -- and we were trying to track down a rapist," said Shadowhare. The crime fighters will often pair up to patrol the streets. Even so, fighting crime comes with its share of hardship. Shadowhare said he suffered a dislocated shoulder two years ago while trying to help a woman who was being attacked. And the authorities don't always take him seriously. In one encounter with a Hamilton County corrections officer, Shadowhare was greeted with a chuckle and a look of disbelief. But Shadowhare said he and his team are not deterred by the criticism. He remains focused on trying to make Cincinnati a better place, whether it's fighting crime or feeding the homeless. For now, the law is on Shadowhare's side. It is legal in Ohio and Kentucky to make a citizens arrest, however, the arrester does face possible civil litigation if the person arrested turns out to be innocent.

Arlen Specter

Who/What/Where
Arlen Specter Switching Parties From Republican To Democrat
Why
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) is becoming a Democrat. "I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," said Specter in a statement. "I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election." "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans." The move will give Democrats a filibuster-proof 60 vote majority in the Senate, presuming Minnesota's Al Franken is eventually seated. However, in his statement Specter said his opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act -- widely seen as a defense against a Republican primary challenge -- will not change. Polls had shown that, despite his shift on EFCA, Specter was on his way to losing his seat if he stayed in the GOP. A Rasmussen survey from last Friday had former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey beating the Senator by 21 points in the primary. Sources told the AP that an announcement could come later in the day -- or Wednesday. Vice President Joe Biden and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell have urged Specter to switch parties in the past. President Obama called Specter Tuesday to say Democrats "are thrilled to have you."

Swine Flu Hits Orlando

Who/What/Where
Swine flu case confirmed in Orlando
Why
Reports of Florida's first case of swine flu may have been premature. In a 12:15 press conference, Dr. Scott C. Brady, vice president of Florida Hospital in Orlando, said reports of the case were based on an e-mail between a doctor and a reporter, but that testing needed to confirm the case by the state has not yet been completed. Earlier today, WFTV-9 in Orlando reported that Loran Hauck, Adventist Health System's chief medical officer, wrote that a patient at the hospital had been diagnosed with swine flu. WFTV-9's report said Hauck's e-mail originally stated that the patient was a tourist from Mexico who visited Disney attractions over the weekend. State Health Department spokeswoman Susan Smith later said the state has not yet confirmed the case as swine flu. ''Confirmation of positive tests of swine flu will come from Department of Health labs and the Centers for Disease Control,'' she said in a statement. Brady said the hospital would have to wait 24 to 48 hours for confirmation from state officials. Brady said the infected patient was diagnosed with Influenza A, a category of the flu, which includes swine flu. But, this could be one of several other types of flu. Orange County Health Department officials told the Orlando Sentinel that they are aware of at least one case being tested. ''We have released one suspect case that was sent to a state lab for testing and we're waiting to see what that is,'' Orange County Health Department spokesman Dain Weister told the newspaper. ``There may be more than one [case]. Any influenza-like cases are being sent and being looked at.'' Weister said they have not received any confirmation from CDC about swine flu in Central Florida. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel contributed to this report.

Houston Flooding

Who/What/Where
Storms dump heavy rain in Houston, flood advisory in effect
Why
Severe storms beginning late April 27 into Tuesday have caused flooding in parts of the Houston area. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Cypress Creek at Stuebner-Airline Road area, where it says record flooding has occurred, but expects river levels to decrease throughout the day. Earlier thunderstorms dropped five to seven inches of rain over the northwest Houston area, and run-off produced the rise in water at Stuebner-Airline Road. People are cautioned to stay away from the river until the water levels recede, and motorists should avoid any roadways covered with water and find an alternate route. A flood watch remains active until noon Tuesday for portions of Fort Bend, Harris and Waller counties, according to the National Weather Service. Areas in Southeast Texas are expected to get similar rain levels beginning in Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. The American Red Cross will open two shelters in Northwest Harris County for area residents affected by today's floods: • Copperfield Church, 8350 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095 at 10 a.m. - 540 capacity. • Creek United Methodist Church, 16000 Rippling Water, Houston, TX 77084 at 11 a.m. - 300 capacity.
