Kelly McGillis

Who/What/Where
Kelly McGillis confirms she's a lesbian to gay website
Why
Kelly McGillis, best known for playing teacher to Tom Cruise in "Top Gun," has confirmed long-held rumors that she's a lesbian, according to an interview on the website shewired. "I'm done with the man thing," says McGillis, 51, who is twice married and twice divorced and has two teenage daughters. "I did that, I need to move on in life. It's a part of being true to yourself. That's been a challenge for me." The Daily Mail says McGillis' sexual orientation was Hollywood's worst-kept secret. (Funny, we thought the worst-kept secret was that Jodie Foster was gay. Or John Travolta. We could go on.) The Popeater.com blog says the announcement crushes "a million middle-aged hearts." The image of Charlie from "Top Gun" batting for the other team? Somehow we doubt that.

Building collapse in Lower Manhattan

Who/What/Where
Five-story building collapses in New York City
Why
A vacant five-story building collapsed in Lower Manhattan Thursday morning, flattening a car and showering debris in every direction. Emergency crews - some using dogs - sifted through the rubble at Reade St. after the 6 a.m. accident. Officials haven't reported any injuries. "It was like 37 train cars coming right by your head," said Nick Palmacci, 24, who lives nearby and was awakened by the booming collapse between Broadway and Church St. Ed Ortiz, 39, works across the street at MacKenzie Doors. "I just came out this door and I seen it crumbling from the top," Ortiz said. "As the windows shattered it came straight down. It was crazy!" Ortiz said the block was deserted at the time of the collapse, which probably saved lives. "Thank God it was early," he said. "By 8 o'clock somebody would have gotten hurt." Bricks were strewn about, a thick brown cloud of dust covered the block and tentacles of wood dangled from the building's shell. The facade peeled away leaving the abandoned floors and stairways exposed. Carpenter Anthony DeRosa said he usually parks in the spot where a blue Crown Victoria was buried in debris. "That car had taken the spot and it got crushed," DeRosa, 45, said. "Usually I wind up sitting in the truck until this place opens. It was my lucky day." Neighbors said the building had been crumbling for weeks. It had recently been outfitted with corner braces, neighbors said. "We said it was only a matter of days," said carpenter Eric White, who also works across the street. "We knew it." Buildings Department inspectors, Con Edison workers and firefighters were still on the scene hours after the collapse. Residents in the area - a few blocks from Ground Zero - were alerted to the accident by an emergency e-mail service called Notify NYC.

fbstarter.com

Who/What/Where
Beware Facebook Phishing Attack!
Why
I don't much use Facebook, so Facebook messages (which appear in my email) are the main thing that prompts me to log in. However, a message this morning, from someone I knew in high school but haven't otherwise spoken to in 25 years, was a bit different than the norm. The message merely said, "Look at this!" and gave a link to "fbstarter.com". I was suspicious already, since it seemed a bit unlikely that this person would have sent me a message, and the message itself was inexplicable. But, I'm on a Mac, and I have good backups, so I decided to visit the URL. It displayed what looked like a normal Facebook login page, but Firefox hadn't pre-filled my login credentials, and the domain was indeed fbstarter.com, which was just strange. Warning bells were going off in my head, so I immediately closed the page. A quick Google search later, and I discovered that Facebook is being used to send phishing attacks. Neither the fbstarter.com nor another domain being used, fbaction.net, are dangerous, but both will try to steal your login credentials so your account can be used to launch future attacks. If you use the same login credentials on other sites, I strongly encourage you to change your passwords as well. I suspect that the initial attack vector was purely through forged email, but once accounts had been compromised, the attacks were launched through Facebook itself; the one I received certainly was. Facebook has released a statement saying that they're blocking the fbaction.net domain from being shared on the site (I couldn't use that domain in a comment to the sender of the message), removing referring content, and resetting passwords of senders so the attackers can no longer access those accounts. None of the coverage I saw mentioned the fbstarter.com domain, so it appears that the attackers can easily tweak the attack. Now the entire situation may devolve into a game of whack-a-mole, as the attackers come up with new phishing attempts and Facebook blocks them. The moral of the story? Be very suspicious of messages you receive on Facebook or from Facebook via email. If they contain links that are at all generic or dubious, verify the message with the sender before clicking the links. And if you follow any links that display a Facebook login page but do not have the http://www.facebook.com/ domain in the address bar, do not log in.

Zodiac Killer

Who/What/Where
Californian Says Father Was Zodiac Killer
Why
In the pantheon of unsolved mysteries, few can top the Zodiac, the shadowy killer blamed for five Bay Area murders in the late 1960s and untold numbers of stranger-than-fiction theories ever since. Add to that roster the tale told Wednesday by Deborah Perez, who announced to a skeptical crowd of reporters and Zodiac aficionados here not only that the killer was her adoptive and long-dead father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, but that she had been present at at least one killing and had even scribbled some of the taunting notes the Zodiac sent to the press and the police. "I was a child and just thought I was helping my dad," said Ms. Perez, a 47-year-old real-estate agent from Southern California. "I didn't know." Neither did the San Francisco police, apparently, until Wednesday morning when Ms. Perez's lawyer, Kevin McLean, called to announce their claims, which were also splashed across the front of Wednesday's San Francisco Examiner. "We'll listen," Sgt. Lynn Tomioka, a police spokeswoman. "Just like everybody else." Claims about the Zodiac's identity are a regular occurrence around the Bay Area, which is still fascinated by a case whose last confirmed murder, of a San Francisco taxi driver, was in 1969, though coded letters apparently from the killer continued to turn up for several years after. On Wednesday, several Zodiac enthusiasts, some toting astrological maps, others with snapshots of their favorite suspects, shouted pointed questions at Ms. Perez. "The police will just laugh at this," said Sandy Betts, an amateur sleuth, who did not buy the story. Ms. Perez said she had been oblivious to the Zodiac case until 2007, when she saw an episode of "America's Most Wanted" about it and started to think her father was involved. But she offered little concrete evidence on Wednesday. Mr. McLean said that Ms. Perez had passed psychological exams — "I know that everybody's going to say she's nuts," he said — and that her handwriting claims had been confirmed by Bart Baggett, an "expert document examiner" from Los Angeles, who, as it happens, is also an executive producer and narrator of a coming documentary about the case. Mr. Baggett did not return calls for comment, but Robert Graysmith, a former San Francisco Chronicle reporter who has written two books about the Zodiac case, said he was doubtful of an "entirely new suspect" like Mr. Hendrickson, who Ms. Perez said died in 1983. Mr. Graysmith said he thought he and other Zodiac investigators had come close to pinpointing the killer. "I believe the case is probably already solved, but I never say never," he said via e-mail. "That's what last chapters are for."

Is Tupac Alive?

Who/What/Where
Tupac Is Alive!!! Spotted In New Orleans?
Why
Tupac is alive. We've always heard that the late rapper was hiding on some island somewhere, locked in a studio, recording all the music you've heard released following the years after this death. But, that's all not true. He's alive, and has been hitting the town. TMZ obtained a few photos of the Tupac, alive and well, drinking and have a good ole time at Hand Grenades in New Orleans. (Peep the photo) "13 years after he was shot and 'killed' in Las Vegas ... a man appearing to be 2pac was spotted in a bar on Bourbon Street last weekend," TMZ writes in their blog entry. "We were unable to get any sort of DNA evidence -- but this photo is good enough for us."

Kirstie Alley

Who/What/Where
Kirstie Alley Opens Up About Weight Gain
Why
Actress Kirstie Alley will appear on the Oprah Winfrey show April 30 to discuss her recent weight gain. Alley, 58, lost 75 lbs. in 2005 after becoming a spokesperson for weight loss company Jenny Craig. In 2006, Kirstie appeared on Oprah to show off her newly trim figure in a swimsuit, but has since regained all of the weight. Alley, once a superfit ingenue (see left), has battled huge weight fluctuations for many years, and has also overcome drug abuse. The former Cheers star is divorced from actor Parker Stevenson. In 2008, Kirstie was dropped as the spokesperson of Jenny Craig after having been its public face for three years. She was replaced by actress Valerie Bertinelli, who lost almost 50 lbs. on the diet plan. Bertinelli, 49, then stunned the world by appearing on the April 2009 cover of People magazine in a bikini. Meanwhile, Jenny Craig expressed support for Alley and her continuing weight battle. "Jenny Craig...remains supportive of Kirstie, wish her nothing but the best and we would welcome her back at any time as a returning client," said a spokesperson. Ironically, in 2008, Kirstie vehemently denied rumors that she had gained weight, even threatening to sue tabloids that printed such stories. Sadly, the rumors turned out to be true.

Vern Gosdin

Who/What/Where
Singer-Songwriter Vern Gosdin Dies in Nashville at Age 74
Why
Singer-songwriter Vern Gosdin, who achieved mainstream country success in the '80s with hits such as "Set 'Em Up Joe" and "Chiseled in Stone," died late Tuesday (April 28) at a Nashville hospital at age 74. Gosdin, who was often referred to as "the Voice," reportedly suffered a stroke several weeks ago. Born in Woodland, Ala., he had already achieved success with his brother, Rex, as the Gosdin Brothers before launching his solo career. As a teenager, his family hosted The Gosdin Family Gospel Show on a radio station in Birmingham, Ala. Vern and Rex Gosdin moved to the Los Angeles area in 1961 and began performing in a bluegrass group, the Golden State Boys. The band evolved into another bluegrass group, the Hillmen, featuring Chris Hillman, who later became a founding member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Desert Rose Band. With the demise of the Hillmen, the Gosdin Brothers scored one country hit, "Hangin' On," which peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard chart in 1967. Rex Gosdin died in 1983. In the early '70s, Vern Gosdin moved to Atlanta, where he ran a retail store, but he continued to perform in area clubs. Emmylou Harris, who knew him from their days in California, teamed with Gosdin to record a demo single featuring two songs -- a remake of "Hangin' On" and a new one, "Yesterday's Gone." The demo resulted in Gosdin's contract with Elektra Records. "Yesterday's Gone" became his first single for the label and reached No. 9 on the country chart in 1977. During the late '70s and early '80s, Gosdin charted other Top 10 singles for the Elektra, Ovation and AMI labels before scoring his first No. 1 hit in 1984 with "I Can Tell by the Way You Dance (You're Gonna Love Me Tonight)," written by Sandy Pinkard and Rob Strandlund. After moving to Columbia Records in the late '80s, he quickly scored a series of Top 10 singles with songs he co-wrote, including "Do You Believe Me Now," "Chiseled in Stone," "Who You Gonna Blame It On This Time" and "That Just About Does It." His recordings of two other original songs from that era -- "Set' Em Up Joe" and "I'm Still Crazy" reached No. 1. Gosdin's last Top 10 singles were released in 1990 -- "Right in the Wrong Direction" and "Is It Raining at Your House." In 1989, Gosdin and one of his longtime songwriting collaborators, Max D. Barnes, shared a CMA Award for song of the year for "Chiseled in Stone." George Strait enjoyed a Top 10 hit in 1997 with "Today My World Slipped Away," a song Gosdin co-wrote with Mark Wright. It had been a Top 10 single for Gosdin in 1982.

US Swine Flu Death

Who/What/Where
Govt. Confirms First US Swine Flu Death
Why
A government official confirmed the death from the new H1N1 swine flu on Wednesday. It is the first death from the flu outside of Mexico, which has been the country hardest-hit by the influenza outbreak. U.S. officials have confirmed 65 cases of swine flu, most of them mild. The acting head of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention says the confirmed death of a toddler in Texas is a tragic development, but that it's too soon to say just how fast the swine flu virus is spreading. Dr. Richard Besser said Wednesday health authorities had been anticipating that the virus would cause deaths, and said that "as a pediatrician and a parent, my heart goes out to the family." But Besser said in a nationally broadcast network interview that it's too soon to say if the death in Texas suggests the virus is spreading to more states. Nor would he say whether officials think it will become a nationwide problem. Besser said he didn't believe "this indicates any change in the strain of the flu." Besser also said that "we see with any flu virus a spectrum of disease symptoms" and said authorities need to learn more about the threat. No Massachusetts Cases In the Bay State, two Spencer elementary school students who traveled to Mexico last week were tested for swine flu on Tuesday after they complained of flu-like symptoms to a school nurse. Spencer School Superintendent Ralph Hicks said a nurse at the Lake Street Elementary School called the students' mother after they said they were feeling ill. Letters were sent home notifying parents of the students' symptoms. "They weren't that bad. The nurse said they were mild to moderate, they weren't bad, they weren't serious. It wasn't like we needed to call 911," Hicks said. "I think it's good they're notifying the public. It's a safety issue for everybody," one mother said. The children were taken to a private doctor, who collected samples to send away for testing at a national health center. Hicks said he did not know the ages of the children, but he said they are enrolled between grades 1 and 3. Classrooms the students visited during the day were evacuated and cleaned, along with common areas. Additional custodial workers were planning to clean the school overnight, and a bus company that provides service for the town was also going to disinfect its vehicles, according to Hicks. "Which is probably overkill but we want to be safe rather than sorry," Hicks said. Officials in Lowell were also awaiting test results for two siblings who took ill after they visited Mexico last week. The students began to feel sick while they were still on the trip and did not return to school once they returned, according to Lowell Health Director Frank Singleton. Singleton expected to get the results of their tests from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Tuesday evening. An official from Brockton Hospital who was also vacationing in Mexico last week reportedly became ill and was being tested. An Ontario woman who was on a Boston-bound plane from Mexico Monday reported feeling ill and was taken off the plane and tested. She reported negative for the virus.

David Poole

Who/What/Where
David Poole, longtime NASCAR writer who brought enthusiasm to his craft, dies of a heart attack
Why
Over thousands of backstretches and hundreds of checkered flags, David Poole made himself into more than one of the nation's leading authorities on NASCAR. He became a part of the sport he loved. "David Poole was as much a fixture in this sport as the actual cars themselves," driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Tuesday. "He was a one-of-a-kind individual and an extremely talented writer." Poole, who covered racing for the Charlotte Observer, died of a heart attack Tuesday at his Stanly County home. He was 50. A Gastonia native, Poole became the Observer's NASCAR writer in 1997. He built a national following through ThatsRacin.com and a daily program he hosted on Sirius NASCAR Radio. The National Motorsports Press Association four times named him its writer of the year. He wrote about the sport with the enthusiasm of a fan and the critical eye of a journalist. "He could be controversial from time to time, but he always wrote and spoke what he believed," said Richard Childress, president and CEO Richard Childress Racing. "He didn't pull any punches with anybody and that's what people respected about him. He was good for the sport." To honor Poole, Sirius plans to broadcast a tribute on Wednesday morning. NASCAR plans a moment of silence before Saturday's race at Richmond. "He was truly one of the nation's best and he always wrote what he believed," said Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of Speedway Motorsports. "Whether you agreed with him or not, he made us all think, and that's what the best writers do. He cared about what he did and had a passion for his work. It came through in what he wrote every day." In announcing Poole's death to a hushed newsroom Tuesday afternoon, Observer editor Rick Thames called him "the best in his field, there's no doubt about that." Thames said: "David Poole was the fans' reporter, always covering NASCAR with their sensibilities in mind. Their passions were his passions. Their values, his values. If that occasionally clashed with the powerbrokers of the sport, so be it. David told it like it was. And by doing that, he made the sport richer and more genuine for all who love it." As word of his death spread, tributes poured in from throughout the NASCAR community. "So sorry," a reader named Scott wrote on one message board. "I've been ragging on Poole for years through e-mails and his blog. One thing about him, he would always answer back." "I listened to him every day on Sirius, even this morning, in all his glory ranting, like only David could, about Talladega!!!" Leslie from Arlington, Tenn., wrote. "His honesty and truth were greatly cherished." After dramatic weekend crashes at Talledega — one of which sent several spectators to the hospital — Poole criticized the track's design in a column headlined "Will it take a death for Talladega to change?" "It seems we've decided we can live with that much damage being done to the sport's customers for 'good racing,'" he wrote. "How many people have to be listed in 'guarded' or 'critical' condition before we say that's too much?" Roger Curtis, president of Michigan International Speedway, said Poole "made our sport better by expecting as much out of us as he did himself and, believe me, he was never shy about holding us to his standard."

Shadowhare

Who/What/Where
Cincinnati Superhero Patrols Streets Fighting Crime
Why
Cincinnati police have a new ally in their fight against crime, whether they want it or not. He calls himself Shadowhare, and he wears a mask and a cape to conceal his true identity. He's Cincinnati's own version of a superhero fighting crime and injustice where he finds it. "We help enforce the law by doing what we can in legal standards, so we carry handcuffs, pepper spray … all the legal weapons," said Shadowhare. "We will do citizen's arrests. We will intervene on crimes if there is one happening in front of us." The man behind Shadowhare's mask is 21 years old and from Milford. Those are the only clues to his true identity that he will reveal. Shadowhare said he was abused as a child and grew up in foster homes, perhaps leading him to a life helping others. "My message to Cincinnati is that there is still hope and all we have to do is stand together," he said. Shadowhare is not alone in his quest to fight crime. He heads up a group of men -- and one woman -- called the "Allegiance of Heroes." The members communicate with each other in online forums. Among the members are Aclyptico in Pennsylvania, Wall Creeper in Colorado and Master Legend in Florida. "I've even teamed up with Mr. Extreme in California -- San Diego -- and we were trying to track down a rapist," said Shadowhare. The crime fighters will often pair up to patrol the streets. Even so, fighting crime comes with its share of hardship. Shadowhare said he suffered a dislocated shoulder two years ago while trying to help a woman who was being attacked. And the authorities don't always take him seriously. In one encounter with a Hamilton County corrections officer, Shadowhare was greeted with a chuckle and a look of disbelief. But Shadowhare said he and his team are not deterred by the criticism. He remains focused on trying to make Cincinnati a better place, whether it's fighting crime or feeding the homeless. For now, the law is on Shadowhare's side. It is legal in Ohio and Kentucky to make a citizens arrest, however, the arrester does face possible civil litigation if the person arrested turns out to be innocent.

Arlen Specter

Who/What/Where
Arlen Specter Switching Parties From Republican To Democrat
Why
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) is becoming a Democrat. "I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," said Specter in a statement. "I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election." "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans." The move will give Democrats a filibuster-proof 60 vote majority in the Senate, presuming Minnesota's Al Franken is eventually seated. However, in his statement Specter said his opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act -- widely seen as a defense against a Republican primary challenge -- will not change. Polls had shown that, despite his shift on EFCA, Specter was on his way to losing his seat if he stayed in the GOP. A Rasmussen survey from last Friday had former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey beating the Senator by 21 points in the primary. Sources told the AP that an announcement could come later in the day -- or Wednesday. Vice President Joe Biden and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell have urged Specter to switch parties in the past. President Obama called Specter Tuesday to say Democrats "are thrilled to have you."

Swine Flu Hits Orlando

Who/What/Where
Swine flu case confirmed in Orlando
Why
Reports of Florida's first case of swine flu may have been premature. In a 12:15 press conference, Dr. Scott C. Brady, vice president of Florida Hospital in Orlando, said reports of the case were based on an e-mail between a doctor and a reporter, but that testing needed to confirm the case by the state has not yet been completed. Earlier today, WFTV-9 in Orlando reported that Loran Hauck, Adventist Health System's chief medical officer, wrote that a patient at the hospital had been diagnosed with swine flu. WFTV-9's report said Hauck's e-mail originally stated that the patient was a tourist from Mexico who visited Disney attractions over the weekend. State Health Department spokeswoman Susan Smith later said the state has not yet confirmed the case as swine flu. ''Confirmation of positive tests of swine flu will come from Department of Health labs and the Centers for Disease Control,'' she said in a statement. Brady said the hospital would have to wait 24 to 48 hours for confirmation from state officials. Brady said the infected patient was diagnosed with Influenza A, a category of the flu, which includes swine flu. But, this could be one of several other types of flu. Orange County Health Department officials told the Orlando Sentinel that they are aware of at least one case being tested. ''We have released one suspect case that was sent to a state lab for testing and we're waiting to see what that is,'' Orange County Health Department spokesman Dain Weister told the newspaper. ``There may be more than one [case]. Any influenza-like cases are being sent and being looked at.'' Weister said they have not received any confirmation from CDC about swine flu in Central Florida. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel contributed to this report.

Houston Flooding

Who/What/Where
Storms dump heavy rain in Houston, flood advisory in effect
Why
Severe storms beginning late April 27 into Tuesday have caused flooding in parts of the Houston area. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Cypress Creek at Stuebner-Airline Road area, where it says record flooding has occurred, but expects river levels to decrease throughout the day. Earlier thunderstorms dropped five to seven inches of rain over the northwest Houston area, and run-off produced the rise in water at Stuebner-Airline Road. People are cautioned to stay away from the river until the water levels recede, and motorists should avoid any roadways covered with water and find an alternate route. A flood watch remains active until noon Tuesday for portions of Fort Bend, Harris and Waller counties, according to the National Weather Service. Areas in Southeast Texas are expected to get similar rain levels beginning in Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. The American Red Cross will open two shelters in Northwest Harris County for area residents affected by today's floods: • Copperfield Church, 8350 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095 at 10 a.m. - 540 capacity. • Creek United Methodist Church, 16000 Rippling Water, Houston, TX 77084 at 11 a.m. - 300 capacity.

Dennis Rodman

Who/What/Where
Judge orders Rodman to pay Vegas casino employee
Why
A federal judge in Las Vegas has ordered former NBA star Dennis Rodman to pay a former casino employee $225,000 for grabbing and humiliating her at work in March 2006. A lawyer for 28-year-old Sara Ure says Rodman never responded to the civil lawsuit filed against him in November 2007. U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Jones entered a default judgment against Rodman on Monday. No lawyer for Rodman was cited in the case file. Rodman's marketing agent did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment. Ure is a former beverage manager at the Hard Rock Casino. She accused Rodman of grabbing her and forcing her to dance, holding her against her will and slapping her backside in front of subordinates and patrons.

Larry Wachowski

Who/What/Where
'Matrix' Director Larry Wachowski Transitioned to Lana
Why
Rumors have been circulating for years that "Matrix" co-director and producer Larry Wachowski is in the process of transitioning from a man to a woman. "Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex. Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation," wrote columnist David Poland in 2003. Writer Peter Wilkinson also lent credence to the Larry Wachowski transgender rumors when, in 2006, he wrote the following about Wachowski's relationship with dominatrix Ilsa in an article for the Rolling Stone: "Leaving Los Angeles, he and Ilsa moved into a $2.7 million home in San Francisco, on a steep hill in the Castro, with sweeping views of San Francisco Bay. (As of last month, work was still under way on an expensive addition to the house, and a sparkling new red Lexus was parked in the indoor garage.) On the transfer deed for the Castro home, the name Laurence Wachowski does not appear. Instead, it's 'Laurenca' Wachowski. And in a judge's order, filed in the divorce proceeding, he is similarly identified as Laurence Wachowski, a.k.a. Laurenca Wachowski." But the most powerful evidence to date concerning Larry Wachowski's alleged transition from man to woman has been furnished by the self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media," Perez Hilton. Hilton posted photos on his website today (you can see them by clicking the link at the bottom of this article) that allegedly show Larry Wachowski looking very much like as a post-operative transsexual. If true, Larry Wachowski is not the first high-profile person to make the transition from man to woman. One of the most famous cases is that of Renee Richards. Renee Richards was born Richard Raskind in 1934. But in 1975, Raskind, an ophthalmologist and former pro tennis player, had a sex change operation and become Renee Richards. Her story came to prominence when the United States Tennis Association prohibited her from competing in the 1976 U.S. Open as a woman. Richards challenged the ban in court, and, in 1977, the New York Supreme Court ruled in her favor.

Mexico City Earthquake

Who/What/Where
Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Hits Mexico
Why
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Mexico City early Monday afternoon, sending frightened residents into the streets and saturating phone lines, but causing no apparent significant damage. The quake rattled nerves of Mexicans already coping with an outbreak of the swine flu that has killed an estimated 149 people. The combination of the higher death toll from the flu and the quake weakened the peso, which had lost nearly 5% from Friday's close to MXN13.975 per U.S. dollar. The quake briefly interrupted a press conference in which Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova was giving an update on the flu emergency situation. The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, home to the resort of Acapulco, which lies roughly 360 kilometers from Mexico City. The earthquake's depth made serious damage less likely, said Jim Dewey, a research geophysicist with USGS. "Certainly strong shaking could be perceived, but it wouldn't likely cause extensive damage," Dewey said. "It was 25 miles deep, so that puts some distance between it and the surface of the ground." Telephone service in parts of Mexico City was lost briefly. A spokesman for phone company Telefonos de Mexico (TMX) said lines were temporarily saturated with call volume, as usually happens after earthquakes, and that there was no reported damage to exchanges. Mexicans, accustomed to earthquakes, largely shrugged off the tremor, worried more about the killer flu. "Ah, we're accustomed to earthquakes around here," said Leopoldo Garcia, a 70-year-old retiree walking around the city. Mexican state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos is operating normally despite an earthquake that hit Mexico Monday and the flu outbreak, said a company spokesman. "We haven't seen any damage yet," said the spokesman, adding that the company is still checking for earthquake damage and that it's premature to rule out any incidents.

New York Military Fly Over

Who/What/Where
Low-flying plane photo-op panics workers near Ground Zero
Why
A low-flying Boeing 747 escorted by two fighter jets as part of a federal government photo opportunity over lower Manhattan caused a brief panic among workers near ground zero on Monday. John Leitner, a floor trader at the New York Mercantile Exchange Building, said workers received no official prior announcement about the exercise. He said everyone panicked when they saw the low-flying planes and began running out of the building, mere blocks from the former World Trade Center site, around 10 a.m. About 1,000 workers gathered along the Hudson River until a security officer with a bullhorn told them it was a planned exercise. Workers in other office buildings also reportedly spilled out into the street. The Federal Aviation Administration said the government was conducting a military photo op involving two Air Force F-16 jets and the 747. It said it notified city law enforcement about the mission.

Carl Edwards Crash

Who/What/Where
Eight Fans Injured After Crash Coming To The Finish
Why
The unofficial count of eight fans were injured when Carl Edwards spun into the safety fence past the tri-oval during Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. At this time, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. Two women was transferred to a local hospital via airlift due to the intense traffic after the race. She is believed to have sustained facial injuries and a broken jaw, according to Dr. Bobby Lewis, the medical director at Talladega Superspeedway. "After the incident that occurred on the last lap, we are treating approximately eight patients from injuries received from flying debris," said Lewis. " The injuries appear to minor and non life-threatening. One female patient is being transported by air, because of traffic, for further evaluation and treatment. "None of the injuries are dangerous or life-threatening. It's mostly bumps and bruises with possible minor fractures." Injuries to the other seven are believed to be cuts and scrapes, as well as some bone fractures from debris that flew into the stands from Edwards's car. In Edwards's TV interview, he was thankful the damage was not more severe then it was: "We'll race like this until we kill somebody and then they'll change it, but I'm just glad nobody got hurt today. I'm glad the car didn't go up in the grandstands and hurt somebody. We were just racing hard and we're lucky nobody got hurt. "I saw some fencing at one point and that made me a little bit nervous. I don't know if I could live with myself if I ended up in the grandstands." "Six of the eight people seen for injuries following the incident on the final lap have been treated and released, said Kristi King, Senior Director of Communications and Consumer Marketing at Talladega Superspeedway. "Two of the six chose to follow up with their own local physicians. The other two have been transported and were reported on in our earlier statement. Further updates will be made as information becomes available." No comment is available from NASCAR at this time. More information will be passed along as it is received.

Swine Flu

Who/What/Where
Mexico Shuts Some Schools Amid Deadly Flu Outbreak
Why
Mexican officials, scrambling to control a swine flu outbreak that has killed at least 16 people and possibly dozens more in recent weeks, shuttered schools from kindergarten to university for millions of young people in and around the capital on Friday and urged people with flu symptoms to stay home from work. "We're dealing with a new flu virus that constitutes a respiratory epidemic that so far is controllable," Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova told reporters late Thursday, after huddling with President Felipe CalderĂłn and other top officials. He said the virus had mutated from pigs and had at some point been transmitted to humans. Mexico's flu season is usually over by now, but health officials have noticed a significant spike in flu cases. The World Health Organization reported about 800 cases of flu-like symptoms in Mexico in recent weeks, most of them among healthy young adults, with 57 deaths in Mexico City and 3 in the central part of the country. Mexican officials confirmed 16 deaths from swine flu, and said another 45 were under investigation. The deaths have presented a worrisome pattern because seasonal flus typically kill infants and old people, while pandemic flus — like the 1918 Spanish flu, and the 1957 and 1968 pandemics — often strike young, healthy people the hardest. Doctors believe that is because young adults have more vigorous immune systems — which mount an assault on the new virus known as a "cytokine storm" — that may actually overwhelm the victim's own lungs by causing inflammation and drawing in fluid. It was clear that Mexican health officials were alarmed. Besides shutting classes, the government urged people to avoid large gatherings and to refrain from the common greetings of a hand shake or kiss on the cheek. City buses continued to operate but some passengers were seen wearing masks, and a cough or a sneeze by one passenger prompted others to relocate. Health officials in the United States were working to determine whether the Mexican outbreak was tied to the unusual strain of swine flu that has been circulating among people in the American Southwest but is not known to have caused any deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency, which has found only seven cases in the United States, expects to find more now that it has begun looking intensively for them. "We don't yet know the extent of the problem," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the director of respiratory diseases for the agency, "but we don't think this is a time for major concern." Five of the people infected were in Imperial and San Diego Counties in California and two were in San Antonio. They were 9 to 54 years old. None had any contact with pigs, and in two sets of cases — involving a father and daughter and two 16-year-old schoolmates — those infected had contact with each other. That convinced the authorities that the virus was being transmitted from person to person. The seven people were apparently infected from late March to mid-April. Only one was hospitalized, and all recovered. The A (H1N1) flu strain they had was quite unusual, said Dr. Nancy Cox, the chief of the agency's flu division. It contained gene segments from North American swine, bird and human flu strains as well as one from Eurasian swine. Like some human strains, it is resistant to two older flu drugs, amantadine and rimantadine. It is not resistant to Tamiflu or Relenza. However, Tamiflu resistance is common in the H1N1 human flu strain circulating this year, so the swine strain could become resistant to Tamiflu if the viruses mixed in humans or, possibly, in pigs. Swine flus rarely infect humans. There have been about a dozen cases since 2005, but almost all were in farm workers or others in contact with pigs. In 1976, there was a cluster of swine flu cases among soldiers at Fort Dix, in New Jersey, one of whom died. That led to a rush to make a new vaccine and administer it to 40 million Americans. No epidemic materialized, but thousands of people claimed that the vaccine had given them Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome, which can cause lethargy or paralysis. The episode led to the resignation of the director of the disease control center, and the agency has been wary of causing panic over influenza cases ever since. The unusual strain this year was noticed, Dr. Schuchat said, only because the agency was trying out a new diagnostic test at a Navy laboratory and doing more testing than usual through a new Border Infectious Disease Surveillance Project along the Mexican border. Officials at the public health agency in Canada said their Mexican counterparts had warned them this week of a "relatively high" fatality rate for people in Mexico who have had respiratory illnesses this season, some of whom had tested positive for flu.

Mackenzie Brown

Who/What/Where
Bayonne girl's perfect game gains national recognition
Why
Norman Brown expressed countless thanks to a mysterious voice on the other end of his cell phone. He then snapped it shut and turned to his 12-year-old daughter, Mackenzie. "Yo dawg," he said, thrusting his arms in her direction, "you're throwing out the first pitch at the Mets game on Saturday!" Life has been a little crazy for Mackenzie since Tuesday. Of course, that can happen when you retire all 18 boys you face for a perfect game in the Bayonne Little League -- the rarest of baseball feats, even at that level. The congratulatory calls turned to balloons and appearances on local television stations. This morning brought a trip to New York City to do a national Fox TV morning program where she threw pitches in their studio. Last night, she got to sit at home and watch ESPN show highlights of her pitching. "It's been pretty crazy," she said. "In school I have all these teachers asking for my autograph. I wasn't used to that." Playing with the boys, that she's used to. She's been doing it since she was 6. There are no official records on how many perfect games are thrown per season. Little League Baseball in Williamsport, Pa., estimates only 50 to 60 gems occur each year. How many by girls? That, no one knows. But officials at the Bayonne Little League say it is the first in their league's history. Little League officials estimate that more than 100,000 girls play in baseball leagues across the country (Mackenzie is one of two in Bayonne). But while many girls start with baseball, most switch to softball by age 10. Mackenzie, who says she plays baseball because she always has been successful against the boys and just wanted to continue with it, knew she had something special going midway through the game. "In like the fourth inning I kind of knew," she said. "Then I just tried to keep doing what I was doing and not try to mess it up." Her biggest scare came on the second-to-last batter she faced, as he fouled off pitch after pitch (somewhere between five and 12, depending on who you ask). She eventually struck him out, one of 12 she recorded in the game. She finished by striking out the last six. And while the feat has brought her a lot of attention, she says the coolest part of the week is "probably just being able to throw like that." Glenn Regan, her manager and the commissioner of the Bayonne Little League, said that reaction doesn't surprise him a bit. "There are some players I might worry about if their hats would fit on their heads by the time I needed them to pitch again," he said. "But not Mackenzie." The middle child between two baseball-playing brothers, Mackenzie has enjoyed the perfect setup for pitching success. Between Mackenzie, Daniel, 14, and Matthew, 8, the three rotate between pitching, catching and umpiring in the driveway next to their house. Soon, however, those games will need adjustments. When her Little League career ends at the conclusion of this season, she will make the switch to softball. She has enjoyed her heyday playing ball with the boys but has aspirations of a chance to play college sports -- either in softball or basketball, in which she's a highly touted point guard. Baseball doesn't fit that mold as easily. But for now, baseball can be Mackenzie's excuse to miss school for a day and adventure to New York City. And throwing out the first pitch for the Mets game, her dad says, can be an excuse to miss just about anything. "Forget Saturday," he said, grinning at Mackenzie. "All Saturday plans are on hold."

Hungry Girl

Who/What/Where
'Hungry Girl' Has Found the Way To a Snacking Nation's
Why
The country's best-selling cookbook right now is for people who don't really cook, written by a hyperkinetic 43-year-old former TV producer named Lisa Lillien, who once upon a time hated the fact that she couldn't fit into her skinny jeans. "I was that person who would sit at the computer and eat an entire bag of fat-free pretzels and think I was doing a good thing," Lillien says. "I wasn't." This Story * 'Hungry Girl' Has Found the Way To a Snacking Nation's Heart * Recipe Finder: Sweet & Cap'n Crunch Chicken * Recipe Finder: Fettuccine Hungry Girlfredo She lost 25 pounds eight years ago, and in 2003 she started sending her friends low-fat recipes and tips for finding healthful food in mainstream supermarkets. She then very smartly turned herself into a cartoon character on the Internet called Hungry Girl. Now Lillien has almost 700,000 subscribers to her daily Hungry Girl e-mails, and she employs a staff of nine. As foodies seek eco-revelation in the local and organic, Hungry Girl speaks the language of chips, cake, cereal, breakfast sausage, taco shells, easy noodles. By doing so, she acknowledges something we all know about ourselves: For all our slow-cooking, sustainable gardening ambitions, we are a nation of snackers. We eat stuff out of bags and cans. Lillien has turned her conviction that she can lose weight while still eating her favorite foods -- or at least some version of them -- into the latest entry in the highly competitive and ever-changing diet field. "I know exactly what people will like," she says. "I just know. I'm that way. When I taste something, I can say, 'You know what? I like it okay, but only 20 percent of the people will like it,' or 'If I really like it, then 99 percent of people will like it, too.' " She is absolutely sure of her taste buds and absolutely skeptical of nutrition labels. This all started when, like in a "Seinfeld" rerun, Lillien drove 40 miles to have her favorite low-fat pastries tested at a lab. They weren't low-fat at all. She felt burned (and chunky). "People lie," she says. "Whether or not it's malicious, there's a lot of mislabeled stuff out there." Thus Hungry Girl was born. Out of seemingly nowhere, Hungry Girl is now the queen of processed food. Manufacturers beg Lillien for her imprimatur on low-cal, low-fat or otherwise "healthy" food. They don't always get it. They send her bags of baked tortilla chips, boxes of snack bars. A rave on Hungry-Girl.com can phenomenally alter a product's sales, but the only hitch is that Lillien has to like it. When she touted House Foods brand tofu shirataki noodles last year, the response was so strong that the manufacturer put the Hungry Girl cartoon logo on the package. When she bestowed favor on Holey brand low-fat doughnuts, the maker said it caused his biggest sales day ever, better than when his product was featured on cable TV shows and in People magazine. Last year, a compilation of Lillien's most successful recipes, "Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World," sold more than 200,000 copies -- more than two new cookbooks by "30-Minute Meals" queen Rachael Ray. Lillien's latest, "Hungry Girl 200 Under 200: 200 Recipes Under 200 Calories," will debut at No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list May 3. The world headquarters of the Hungry Girl empire is located in an unmarked 1,600-square-foot rental apartment not far off the 101 freeway in the San Fernando Valley, where, on a recent Tuesday morning, a few of Hungry Girl's employees sit working at computers in what would be the dining room. In the open kitchen, a food assistant works on today's test recipe, a version of a Planet Hollywood appetizer from the carbed-out 1990s known as Chicken Crunch (and informally as "Cap'n Crunch Chicken"). "It was good. We used to order it all the time," Lillien says fondly, but with a grimace of caloric regret. The smell of chicken and sugar quickly fills the room, and the recipe's secret is one of Hungry Girl's trademark leaner workarounds -- blending the pulverized Cap'n Crunch with her favorite healthful breading ingredient, Fiber One cereal. This is all exactly what it seems: fast recipes, with names such as "chocolate pudding crunch explosion" and "swapcorn shrimp," using mostly processed ingredients to assemble shame-free nosh. Hungry Girl recipes approximate the foods Lillien knows her adherents (mostly women) crave, such as fried calamari, onion rings and that totem of post-feminist gastronomic fetishes: cute cupcakes.

Jay Leno Hospitalized
Why
Jay Leno went to the hospital today after complaining he wasn't feeling well. Leno was not taken to the hospital by ambulance -- he either drove himself or was driven by a staffer. NBC officials have confirmed tonight's show taping has been canceled -- a repeat will air instead. A rep for Leno says he's still in the hospital for observation. UPDATE -- A rep for "The Tonight Show" says Leno will miss Friday's episode as well. But, the rep adds, "Jay Leno is doing just fine. He was kidding around with the hospital staff and running his monologue jokes by the doctors and the nurses. He's expected back to work on Monday."

Timothy Wright

Who/What/Where
Timothy Wright, Grammy-nominated gospel singer, dies at 61
Why
Grammy-nominated gospel singer and composer the Rev. Timothy Wright died yesterday at Bronx Veterans Hospital at the age of 61. The Brooklyn-born singer was critically injured in a three-vehicle car accident last summer that claimed the lives of his wife and grandson and put the singer on a respirator. Wright's 1994 record, Come Thou Almighty King, recorded with the New York Fellowship Mass Choir, cracked the Billboard Top 20 for gospel albums and grabbed a Grammy nod for best traditional soul gospel album. He was nominated again in that category in 1999 for Been There Done That, recorded with the B/J Mass Choir and featuring Myrna Summers. His best-known songs include "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," "Who's on the Lord's Side," and "You Must Come In at the Door." The Grammy-nominated gospel singer and New York pastor had been fighting to recovery from a car crash that killed his wife, Betty, 58, and grandson, D.J., 14, last July. He passed late Thursday in the Bronx Veterans Hospital. Wright's family had hoped he recover from the critical injuries he sustained over the July 4th weekend in 2008. On Jan. 17, 2009, during the taping of the Stellar Awards in Nashville, Tenn. , Wright's sons accepted an award on behalf of their father and announced to the audience that the renowned reverend had a major medical setback the day of the show. Various rumors about the 61-year-old minister's health circulated over the last two months, most recently that the 'Come Thou Almighty King' was brain dead and wasn't expected to live much longer. Wright was the pastor of the Brooklyn-based ministry, Grace Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ. Since the reverend had been hospitalized, gospel singer John P. Kee has been paying the mortgage on the church.

South Carolina Fires

Who/What/Where
Wildfires Hit Myrtle Beach Area
Why
Wildfires swept through a coastal region of South Carolina on Thursday and headed for North Myrtle Beach, destroying more than 40 homes and forcing more than 2,500 people to evacuate, state officials said. Gov. Mark Sanford declared a state of emergency in Horry County, which includes the Myrtle Beach area, and officials of North Myrtle Beach were scrambling to get residents to pack up and flee. No injuries have been reported since the fire began on Wednesday, but the blaze jumped a state highway and rapidly headed toward a heavily concentrated residential and tourist area, prompting the mass evacuations and the closing of schools and businesses in North Myrtle Beach. The blaze began along the coast just west of Myrtle Beach around noon on Wednesday and quickly spread, fueled by 25 mile-an-hour winds and extremely low humidity. "Our public safety department went door to door and we asked everyone to leave," Mayor Marilyn Hatley of North Myrtle Beach said at a news conference Thursday. "We tried our best to remove everyone as soon as possible." Although the blaze has moved quickly along the coast, it stopped just sort of the Intracoastal Waterway separating the mainland from the coastal area, which firefighters were hoping would act as a natural barrier. "We realized right away that it had huge potential, that it was a very dangerous fire," said Russell Hubright, a spokesman for the South Carolina Forestry Commission. "The other serious part is that there's quite a lot of homes in that immediate area there." Todd Cartner, a spokesman for the Horry County Fire Rescue, told The Associated Press that the blaze was the worst to hit the area since 1976, when about 30,000 acres, or 47 square miles, burned. Typically, wildfires claim about 35 homes a year in South Carolina, Mr. Hubright said, adding that the wildfire that began on Wednesday claimed at least 40 homes and damaged another 100 in barely 24 hours. "This is the worst fire on record as far as loss of homes," he added. Mr. Hubright said that fire and forestry officials responded quickly the blaze, and contained about 25 percent of it by late Wednesday, but that the fire burned vigorously overnight, and by Thursday morning containment was below 10 percent. By early Thursday, officials said that the blaze had engulfed about 15,000 acres. Many tourists who had been vacationing in the area --known for its golf courses and beaches and which generates about $16 billion a year in business -- were forced to flee. Officials were directing evacuees, including tourists and local residents, to three nearby shelters. In the meantime, firefighters tried to fence in the flames with tractor plows and a helicopter equipped with a 750-gallon water bucket. But dry and gusty weather conditions that were expected to continue through Thursday were threatening to stoke the flames. Firefighters said they were concerned that the low humidity and strong winds would allow the fire to "spot," or send out embers as far as a quarter mile away, causing the blaze to spread more quickly. "When you're out there trying to contain a fire and you've got fire jumping ahead of you, that makes it even more dangerous," Mr. Hubright said.

Ira Einhorn

Who/What/Where
Earth Day Co-founder's Dark Past
Why
Founded by environmentalists in the late 1960s and officially initiated by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, at least one ecologist/activist who lays claim to being instrumental in creating that first official Earth Day has rather a dark and murderous past, and ties to present-day prominent politicians. Ira Einhorn, an icon of the counterculture anti-establishment and anti-war movement in the '60s and '70s, and friend of Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, was on stage as master of ceremonies for the first ever Earth Day event, televised globally. Holly Maddux, a beautiful Bryn Mawr College graduate, dated and then lived with Einhorn for a time, their five-year affair ending in 1977. At Einhorn's demand, Maddux, who had fled Einhorn's company, returned to his apartment to retrieve her things. She was never seen alive again. Eighteen months later the reek of decomposing human flesh alerted neighbors that something was indeed wrong, and they in turn alerted the authorities who discovered Maddux' body stuffed in a trunk in the closet of Einhorn's apartment. He was charged with murder on March 28, 1979. A Philadelphia newspaper, The Bulletin, reports for us some interesting details: At the bail hearing, Mr. Einhorn was praised by a contingent of luminaries — all testifying to his character. There were Ivy League professors, an Episcopalian minister and corporate executives who worked with Mr. Einhorn raising funds. They all stated under oath that he was a man of the greatest integrity. Arlen Specter, currently Pennsylvania's senior United States Senator, was Mr. Einhorn's attorney. He managed to get the bail set at the unheard of amount of $40,000 for the suspected murderer. Only 10 percent was needed to free him. Barbara Bronfman, heiress to the Seagram liquor fortune, paid it. Predictably, Einhorn skipped town and fled to France. He flew under the radar for 10 years, and was discovered only after being convicted in absentia, in 1997. He was only extradited after a Pennsylvania state legislator, Daniel O'Brien, introduced and managed to get enough support to pass a special bill that would allow the convicted murderer a new trial in order to appease the French government and the European Court of Human Rights. Those two foreign entities require that anyone tried and convicted in absentia get a new trial, or no extradition will take place. He got his new trial in the United States, was convicted, and sentenced to life in prison on October 17, 2002, after just two hours of deliberation. Before his extradition, he tried to slit his own throat, perhaps sensing the climate of justice that was prevailing in the United States at the time. March 28, 1979, just happens to be the biggest of all environmental disasters — to environmentalists, that is — in U.S. history; Three Mile Island. But it was Ira Einhorn, the ecologist/environmentalist co-founder of Earth Day, who did the real killing.

Bo Jackson

Who/What/Where
Former Sports Star Bo Jackson To Open New Bank
Why
He always said he knew almost everything and maybe he really does! Former NFL football and Major League baseball player Bo Jackson, 46, is opening up his own bank in the southwest suburbs. Of course, he's a sports legend on the baseball diamond and the football field, but as CBS 2's Jim Williams shows us, it turns out Jackson knows banking, too. "One thing that I must stress - I'm not the only owner of this bank," said Jackson. The former White Sox slugger, whose given name is Vincent Edward Jackson, is backing a new chartered bank in southwest suburban Burr Ridge. The Burr Ridge Bank and Trust was to formally open its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, with Jackson present. Jackson is a longtime businessman, but he's now entering an industry that has been deeply troubled in recent months. So why did Jackson agree to be a director of this brand new suburban bank? "We have no type of debt, like all the other banks. We're a small community bank and one thing we all decided, is that if we are going to do a bank in our community, it needs to be owned by the people who live in the community," Jackson said. "This is home. This is where we are comfortable," said Jackson who, with his wife, raised his children in Burr Ridge. Comfort is not what Jackson is looking for at the bank though. "We interviewed Bo. He was very committed to growing the bank and being part of our organization, not just a name," said Roy Thygesen, CEO and president of the bank. But what a name, still, even if he has little interest in describing his athletic exploits. "What I've read about you would indicate you're a guy who lives in the present, with an eye toward the future. You don't have any desire to relive the glory days. Would that be accurate," CBS 2's Jim Williams asked Jackson. "You just won the lotto," Jackson responded, laughing. Jackson played football for the then-Los Angeles Raiders from 1987 to 1990, while playing baseball for the Kansas City Royals. He played for the White Sox in the 1991 and 1993 seasons, and finished his career with the California Angels, as they were then known, before retiring in 1994. Jackson was the only player to be named to the NFL Pro Bowl and to appear in baseball's All-Star Game. He injured his hip playing for the Raiders in 1991, and had hip replacement the following year. The sports star gained national recognition when he appeared in a series of "Bo Knows" commercials for an athletic shoe bearing his name, showcasing his talents real and acted. Since retiring, Jackson has been a businessman living in the Chicago suburbs and has lectured children about health and nutrition issues. Jackson knows one sport today. "I'm crushing golf balls, when I hit it straight. I'm enjoying being an employer," said Jackson. Jackson also owns an enormous athletic complex in the suburbs, among other businesses. He seems to have a happy life. He's been married a long time; his children are grown and two of them are attending Auburn University, where Jackson won the Heisman Trophy, as college football's best player.

Refrigerator Perry

Who/What/Where
"Refrigerator" Perry hospitalized in S.C.
Why
The Bears' first-round draft pick out of Clemson in 1985 told the Tribune last June that he suffered from the disease, which is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms include general weakness of the legs, arms, breathing muscles and face. At the time of the initial diagnosis, Perry said, "I lost a little weight. I never had anything like this before. It just all of a sudden came up on me." Perry, 46, was one of just a handful of 300-pound-plus players in the NFL in the mid-'80s. Now it seems every team has at least five or six in that range. Perry became a commercial novelty as he helped lead the Bears to the Super Bowl XX title. Coach Mike Ditka made the most of Fridge's versatility by deploying him as a fullback and letting him plunge for short touchdowns with his uncanny quickness and tremendous girth. He scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl against New England. After retiring from football, Perry once boxed 7-foot-7 former NBA player Manute Bol in 2002. In 2003 he participated in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog eating contest. He seemed to enjoy devouring the hot dogs, but he finished about 40 hot dogs shy of the winner. Perry, who has three daughters and a son, is also a grandfather. He made headlines when he had dental implants that corrected his once famous gap-toothed smile. His top front teeth had been shot out by a pellet gun when he was a child. Making his first visit to a dentist's office in 20 years, Perry's gums were infected and the procedure took three hours in the office of Vesna Sutter and Timothy Driscoll in Geneva.
