Boston Marathon

Who/What/Where
113th Boston Marathon race
Why
A field of 26,386 runners left Hopkinton for the Boston Marathon. Among them are some top American contenders hoping to earn the first U.S. victory in the race in decades. Temperatures in the 40s with a light headwind greeted them at the start of the 113th edition of the race. Ryan Hall has the fastest time in the field, giving the United States a chance to deprive Kenya of its 17th victory in 19 years. Kara Goucher, who finished third in the New York Marathon last year, could contend for the women's title. Defending champions Robert Cheruiyot (CHEH-ree-yot) of Kenya is going for his fifth Boston win. Dire Tune (DEER-ay TOO-nay) of Ethiopia is trying to repeat as women's champion.
