Why
A tornado was reported by numerous eyewitnesses in Rutherford County on Friday, and hospital officials said at least 13 people were injured. The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro is reporting that two people have died in the northern part of the city, however the Emergency Management Agency has not been able to confirm that report. Dispatchers at the county Emergency Management Agency said the area had been "heavily impacted" and it was in "response phase" after several eyewitness reports of a tornado on the ground at about midday. Power was out in parts of the city, population about 100,500, and some homes were damaged. Martha Tolbert, spokeswoman for Middle Tennessee Medical Center, told Associated Press Radio that 13 people were being treated for injuries. She did not have details about the severity of their injuries. Jenna Lee, front desk receptionist at a Hampton Inn in Murfreesboro, told AP people came in off the street seeking cover when the tornado hit. In her words, "I just stayed at the front desk and prayed." The National Weather Service said it couldn't confirm a tornado struck until later Friday. Numerous weather warnings were issued for Tennessee on Friday. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency reported property damage in Benton, Dickson and Houston counties but no injuries.
