Jason Peters

Who/What/Where
Eagles add Jason Peters, give him new deal
Why
Jason Peters got the contract extension he wanted from the Philadelphia Eagles instead of the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo traded Peters to the Eagles on Friday rather than risk another offseason holdout from the disgruntled left tackle who twice has been voted to the Pro Bowl. Philadelphia signed Peters to a $53 million, four-year contract extension that would keep him with the Eagles through 2014, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The 27-year-old Peters will earn $60 million over the next six seasons, including $25 million in guaranteed money, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because terms weren't released. The Bills received the 28th selection — the second of the Eagles' two first-round picks — and a fourth-round choice in next weekend's draft. Buffalo also gets an undisclosed pick in the 2010 draft. "Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film." Although the Bills lose their most talented offensive lineman, they rid themselves of a potential headache. Peters was threatening to repeat last year's offseason holdout. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $7.2 million over the final two years of his contract. Notes • League officials moved up the start time of the New York Jets' game against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 27 after the team complained about having to play home games on consecutive Jewish holy days. The league rescheduled the 4:15 p.m. Eastern start to 1 p.m. a day after Jets owner Woody Johnson sent a letter to commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting the switch to allow fans to arrive home before sundown on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. The Jets' home opener against New England is 1 p.m. on Sept. 20, which is during Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. • Ex-Denver receiver Vance Johnson, 46, was arrested on violations stemming from two separate court cases. Court officials said Johnson was arrested Thursday in Fort Collins, Colo., for failure to appear when he was late showing up for a hearing in Larimer County District Court. Records in the case are sealed and the allegations against Johnson, who played for the Broncos from 1987 to 1992, are unknown. After Johnson was in custody, authorities discovered an arrest warrant from Garfield County alleging he failed to give his estranged wife $36,500 in a divorce case. He was released on bail.
