Shaka Smart

Who/What/Where
Florida assistant Shaka Smart to coach at VCU
Why
Virginia Commonwealth is set to hire Florida assistant Shaka Smart as its new head coach, according to multiple reports. SI.com and CBSSports.com reported Smart will take over for Anthony Grant, who left VCU for Alabama last week. Grant, also a former Florida assistant, led the Rams to two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons. Smart, who will turn 32 in April, served under Billy Donovan for one season. Smart also had assistant coaching stints at Clemson and Akron. A Virginia Commonwealth University official says the school has picked Florida assistant coach Shaka Smart to be its new men's basketball coach. The official familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Smart has not yet signed a contract, but an announcement is planned for Thursday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement has yet to be made. The 32-year-old Smart was an assistant to Billy Donovan at Florida last season and will become the second consecutive Donovan assistant to take over the Rams. Anthony Grant, Donovan's right-hand man for 10 years at Florida, spent the last three seasons as VCU's head coach. He was hired last week to coach at Alabama.

Google Ventures

Who/What/Where
"Google Ventures" to invest in green energy and technologies
Why
Google, which has invested in many startups over the years, will announce on Tuesday that it is creating a venture capital arm whose main objective will be to turn a profit. The group, called Google Ventures, is expected to invest up to $100 million over the next 12 months. It will be overseen by David Drummond, who will continue in his role as senior vice president of corporate developing and chief legal officer at Google. Investments will be vetted by William Maris, who joined Google about a year ago, and Rich Miner, a co-founder of Android, a mobile software startup that Google acquired in 2005. Mr. Maris said in an interview that Google will tap the connections of its employees and its ties to the venture capital world to find promising startups in areas like the Internet, clean technology and life sciences. Many other companies have set up venture capital units. But those groups typically have dual missions of profiting from investments and advancing their parent company's strategic goals, and their track record has been mixed. The venture unit comes as Google is rethinking the mission of Google.org, its corporate philanthropy, which has invested in areas like clean energy. Some of those investments will now be made by the venture unit. "A lot of the things we have done in the energy area the kinds of things you might see from Google Ventures," Mr. Drummond said. He said that Google's corporate development arm will continue to make other investments. Google Ventures has already made two investments: Silver Spring Networks, a company that makes technology to help manage electric grids, and Pixazza, which links online images with related products that can be purchased. Google declined to say how much it invested in those companies.

Alyson Hannigan

Who/What/Where
Alyson Hannigan gives birth to a baby girl
Why
American Pie star Alyson Hannigan was given a special gift on her 35th birthday, her first-born child. The actress and husband Alexis Denisof welcomed baby Satyana into the world on March 24, meaning mother and daughter will share the special anniversary. A spokesperson for the star tells People.com, "They're very excited, and mom and baby are doing great." And Hannigan, who kept the sex of her baby a secret throughout the pregnancy, will be glad she has given birth, because she lost the ability to concentrate while she was with child. She told TV host Ellen DeGeneres in February, "I get tired a lot and I have pregnancy brain, which I never realized was a thing but it is. I sort of feel like a Koala bear where I'm slightly stoned all the time and I'll say the wrong word." Hannigan and Denisof met on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 2000 and married in California in 2003.

Polypill

Who/What/Where
The "Polypill" combines multiple heart medications to drastically reduce heart disease
Why
A cheap five-in-one pill can guard against heart attacks and stroke, research suggests. The concept of a polypill for everyone over 55 to cut heart disease by up to 80% was mooted over five years ago, but slow progress has been made since. Now a trial in India shows such a pill has the desired effects and is safe and well-tolerated by those who take it. Although The Lancet study is proof of concept, experts still question the ethics of a pill for lifestyle issues. Critics say the problems of high blood pressure and cholesterol should be tackled with diet and exercise rather than by popping a pill. The polypill used in the latest study combines five active pharmacological ingredients widely available separately - aspirin, a statin to lower cholesterol and three blood pressure-lowering drugs - as well as folic acid. Trials on 2,053 healthy individuals free of cardiovascular disease, but with a risk factor such as high blood pressure or a long-term smoker, showed combining the drugs into one tablet delivered a similar effect to each drug separately. Reductions were seen in both blood pressure and cholesterol without any major side effects.

Conficker Virus

Who/What/Where
The Conficker virus may infect Microsoft Windows systems
Why
The Conficker worm is expected to hit the Internet on Wednesday, but experts disagree on how extensive the damage could be. One of the most dangerous threats ever, a computer worm known as "Conficker," is spreading through the Internet right now. By some estimates, 10 million computers have been infected worldwide. At Symantec, the company that makes Norton antivirus software, engineers have been tracking Conficker since last November as it worms its way across the globe. "This map is showing a visual representation of where all of the known infections of Conficker are across the world," explained Steve Trilling, a Symantec vice president who says the worm is now living on millions of computers, mainly in corporations. So far, the bad guys who created it haven't triggered Conficker. It's just sitting out there like a sleeper cell. "Imagine a network of spies that has infiltrated a country. And every day, all of the spies are calling in for their instructions on what to do next," Trilling explained. Asked what the worm is being asked to do, Trilling told Stahl, "That's the interesting thing. The only thing the worm is being asked to do is to ask for further instructions." For several months, Trilling says the worm has just been sitting there, awaiting instructions. It's that ominous, because once the hackers issue instructions, Conficker could turn menacing in an instant. With one click, the worm's creator can instruct it to suck sensitive data, like bank passwords and account numbers, out of millions of computers, or launch a massive spam attack to clog up the works. The newest targets of worms are social networking sites. Trilling demonstrated to Stahl how it might work. Looking at a real Facebook page, Trilling explained, "We added your friend and colleague Morley Safer, you can see down there on the left." Friday, the Guardian reported that the House of Commons has been infected with Conficker, which is an "embarrassment," the paper says, since Microsoft announced a fix in October. The House relies on Symantec-owned MessageLabs. Employees are now banned from bringing in flash drives. Today, it seems the infection is more widespread. At the very least, it has penetrated the entire Parliament IT system. Will the ministries be the next to turn up infected? The National Health Service hospital systems and Royal Navy Fleet have also been infected, according to ITWire.

Andy Hallett

Who/What/Where
Former "Angel" star Andy Hallet dies of heart disease at age 33
Why
Andy Hallett, who starred as Lorne ("the Host") on the TV series Angel, died of heart failure last night at age 33, according to his longtime agent and friend Pat Brady. The actor passed away at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after a five-year battle with heart disease, with his father Dave Hallett by his side. Hallett, from the Cape Cod village of Osterville, Mass., appeared on more than 70 episodes of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff, Angel, between 2000 and 2004. The accomplished actor was also a musician and sang two songs ("Lady Marmalade" and "It's Not Easy Being Green") on the Angel: Live Fast, Die Never soundtrack, released in 2005. The actor's character on Angel was Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan, or Lorne for short. Hallett's Lorne was a friendly demon, who, when not assisting Angel and his team in the investigation of various and sundry underworld mysteries, served as the host and headliner at a demon bar. Back in 2001, Hallett told our own Jen Godwin that despite constant flirtation with David Boreanaz' character Angel, and the occasional sly Elton John reference, "We don't really know if he's gay. I don't really know. It's funny, because sometimes he's right in Angel's face, and that's when I feel it the most. And viewers would probably think, hmm, what's going on here? This guy's pretty curvy." Hallett has spent his post-Angel years working on his music career, playing shows around the country. He had been admitted to the hospital three or four times in the past few years for his heart condition, according to Pat. Another Angel castmember, Glenn Quinn, who played Doyle in season one, passed away in 2002. A private funeral service will be held for family and close friends in Cape Cod, most likely over this weekend.

Pistachio Recall

Who/What/Where
Pistachio recall in effect due to salmonella concerns
Why
A Central California company is recalling about 1 million pounds of pistachios over concerns of possible salmonella contamination. Food safety officials are looking through Setton Farms' plant in rural Tulare County to see if it could lead them to the source of the contamination. The recalls began last Friday when the Georgia Nut Company recalled its Kraft Back to Nature Nantucket Blend trail mix after some samples tested positive for salmonella. Setton Farms has started a separate recall of roasted pistachios, and grocery operator Kroger also has recalled some pistachio products. No illnesses have been reported. The California Department of Public Health said Monday it was tracking nuts processed at Setton Farms, a firm whose Web site describes it as the second-largest pistachio processor in the United States. State authorities said Setton sent its roasted pistachios to Georgia Nut. Setton Farms has initiated a separate recall of three lots of roasted pistachios tied to the positive results in the trail mix, California officials said. Kroger said the California firm also supplied the line of pistachios it recalled because of possible salmonella contamination. Those nuts were sold in 31 states. Setton Farms did not immediately respond to calls for comment. Dr. David Acheson, director of food safety for the Food and Drug Administration said the contaminated pistachios are not related to a recent outbreak of salmonella tied to peanuts, reports CBS News Correspondent Nancy Cordes. The one million pound recall figure could grow as the company tracks its products, Cordes reports, and it will likely extend to all manner of pistachio products. Right now, the FDA is advising Americans not to eat pistachios but not to throw away their pistachios either. Basically, people should hold on to their pistachios until the FDA knows more about which products are affected. Public health officials in four states are investigating a Salmonella outbreak associated with spices made by a California company that has so far sickened 42 people, 33 of them in California. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), said in a Mar 28 press release that consumers should avoid eating spices produces by Union International Food Company, though only white and black pepper products have been linked to the illnesses. The company recalled its pepper and other spice products, which were primarily sold to distributors and restaurants in California and Oregon under the Lian How brand name. The products, which include the wording "Packed by Union International Foods" or "Union National Foods," were packed in various-sized containers, from 2.2-lb foil bags to 15-lb cardboard boxes with plastic liners. Besides pepper, other seasonings subject to the recall include cayenne pepper, paprika, chopped onion, onion powder, garlic, curry powder, mustard powder, and wasabi powder. William Keene, senior epidemiologist in the Public Health Division of the Oregon Department of Human Services, told CIDRAP News that the outbreak strain is Salmonella enterica serotype Rissen, which has so far sickened four Oregon residents. He said the strain is also linked to cases in Washington and Nevada. California officials said no deaths have been attributed to the outbreak and the latest known illness onset is Mar 13. Cases were reported from 15 counties in the central and northern part of the state. Salmonellosis is marked by diarrhea, fever, and cramps that start between 12 and 72 hours after infection, with symptoms that last from 4 to 7 days, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most people recover without treatment, but severe cases can occur in infants, the elderly, and people with weakened immunity.

Tony Bennett

Who/What/Where
Washington State's head coach Tony Bennett is hired by Virginia
Why
Washington State men's basketball coach Tony Bennett will be named the new coach at the University of Virginia. Bennett told WSU president Elson S. Floyd and athletic director Jim Sterk this afternoon that he has taken the job. Later, Bennett told his players of his decision. Sterk said Virginia asked for permission to speak to Bennett on Friday. "Dick and Tony Bennett have elevated the men's basketball program at Washington State to an unprecedented level of success," Sterk said. "We will begin a national search for a coach immediately with the goal of finding someone with the integrity, experience, and values that Dick and Tony brought to the program." Dick Bennett was hired as WSU's coach in 2003, and after three seasons his son, Tony, was elevated from assistant coach to the head-coaching spot. Dave Leitao resigned at Virginia two weeks ago after a 10-18 season, the Cavaliers' worst in more than 40 years. Leitao had coached at Virginia for four seasons. Bennett was a hot item a year ago after taking the Cougars to a second straight NCAA tournament. He turned down a chance to go to Indiana, and also rebuffed advances from Marquette and LSU. This year, the Cougars fell back to a 17-16 overall record and a one-game appearance in the NIT. Washington State coach Tony Bennett has been hired as Virginia's men's basketball coach. Washington State athletic director Jim Sterk announced the move Monday evening. He said Virginia asked for permission to speak with Bennett on Friday. Bennett replaces Dave Leitao, who resigned after four seasons. The 39-year-old Bennett posted a 68-30 record in three seasons with the Cougars. His first two teams made the NCAA tournament. This year's squad was eliminated in the first round of the NIT. Bennett was the AP college basketball coach of the year in 2007.

Coach Calipari

Who/What/Where
Calipari may leave Memphis for Kentucky
Why
It appears Kentucky is close to closing the deal to make John Calipari its next basketball coach, if indeed it isn't already done. WHAS/Channel 11 News in Kentucky says it has learned Calipari has decided to take the school's offer. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that UK president Lee Todd wouldn't confirm negotiations with Calipari, but said the process of signing a new coach was "going to move quickly." At Memphis, Calipari's incoming class is considered the nation's best, and he's expected to bring some of those recruits with him to Kentucky. That could create one potential stumbling block, because fired former UK coach Billy Gillispie committed to several young players, including eighth-grader Michael Avery. Todd had said those commitments would be honored, but now is backing off. "I've got to go through that," Todd told the Herald-Leader today. "That's something I have thought about and have some concern with." ESPN is reporting Kentucky's offer is believed to be $35 million for eight years. In Memphis, the Commercial Appeal is reporting that one recruit has been promised he will be allowed out of his commitment to the University of Memphis, if Calipari leaves. Carol Dennis, the mother of Nolan Dennis, told the newspaper about the addendum to her son's letter-of-intent. "We had anticipated on coming to Memphis for Mr. Calipari, and we had a letter that if he leaves, then we get to either follow or start all over again, but I don't know," she said. "Nolan is in agony. I'm assuring you that I hope he stays. The waiting game continues on whether Memphis Coach John Calipari will replace former UK Coach Billy Gillispie. The University of Memphis gave UK permission to speak with Coach Calipari about the Wildcats' coaching position. The Memphis athletics director confirmed Calipari, who has led Memphis to four consecutive sweet 16 appearances, will meet with UK officials. Rivals.com reports Calipari turned down a counter offer from Memphis and is coming to UK for a 40 million dollar, six year deal. UK has not confirmed those reports and when asked about the search at another event Monday afternoon, UK President Dr. Lee Todd had little to say about the Calipari situation. All this comes as businesses, advertisers and even the University scramble to wipe the slate clean of former Coach Billy Gillispie. So now in the wake of reports that Calipari is headed to UK, there are reports that Memphis has asked for permission to talk with Missouri Coach Mike Anderson. Calipari met with his players Monday reportedly leaving the impression that he would be leaving, calling UK the Notre Dame of College basketball. Earlier reports had Calipari meeting with UK representatives Sunday, although permission from Memphis for Kentucky to talk with its head coach never came until Monday. If UK hires Calipari in the next 24 hours, it will be a fast process compared to the transition from Tubby Smith to Billy Gillispie. On March 22nd, 2007 Tubby resigned as UK basketball coach to take the job at the University of Minnesota. It was another two weeks before a new coach was hired, and introduced to UK fans. Billy Gillispie took the wildcat coaching job on April 6th, 2007, 15 days after Tubby Smith announced he was leaving. Gillispie lasted less than two years. He was dismissed from UK last Friday, March 27th.

Earthquakes!

Who/What/Where
Earthquakes hit in California and Alaska
Why
A minor earthquake has struck the Westland of California's Bay Area, leaving many residents talking but nothing damaged. No injuries were reported after an earthquake struck San Jose, California and the Bay area, weighing in at a light 4.3 magnitude tremor. According to Geologists, the epicenter of the earthquake was near Morgan Hill, Calif. The time was Monday, March 30, 2009, at 10:40 AM local time. No damages have been reported. Several large earthquakes have rocked Southern Alaska. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the first of five quakes in the same general area hit at 7:42 p.m. local time last night. The preliminary magnitude was 4.6, the epicenter was 58 miles south-southeast of Old Harbor which is just south of Kodiak. The second quake was far milder at 3.9 and hit at 8:28 p.m. Less than three hours later, at 11:13 p.m. the whopper hit. The USGS says the preliminary measurement was 5.7 and then, a half hour later a magnitude 3.9 grinder was felt in the same area. No damage and no injuries have been reported. Meanwhile, Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano was the center of 18 volcanic eruptions last week, several of those came Saturday throwing a massive cloud of ash into the sky. The ash can be extremely harmful to jet engines. As a result, Alaska Airlines was forced to cancel all flights in and out of Anchorage Saturday. Flights were resumed late Sunday.
