Products that mimic the effects of marijuana and have potentially dangerous side effects are being sold via popular online shopping web sites like Amazon.com, and at suburban malls, convenience stores and gas stations. High school students and members of the military use "legal marijuana" or "herbal incense," marketed as K2, Spice and Potpourri, to get high because the products are legal, easily available and do not show up on drug tests. They can also be inexpensive. "Purple Diesel Spice - Twisted Pourri," packaged with a bright purple label, sells for just $7.99 per gram via Amazon. An ABC News investigation found these products available on-line and at stores for anywhere from $15 to $85. Amazon.com did not respond to requests for comment. Arguing that the government has no "right to regulate euphoria," a coalition of retail stores is fighting federal efforts to ban the sale of products that mimic the effects of marijuana, including K2, Spice and Potpourri. The products have become widely known to high school students and members of the military as "legal marijuana" that do not show up on drug tests and are sold at malls, convenience stores and gas stations for between $15 and $85. Earlier this spring I drove a solar racer designed by engineering students at the State University of New York in New Paltz. The studio's offices are currently under construction in Dundee, reports Develop, and is headed up by Ian Hetherington, Patrick Chung and Harry Weller - all former executives at the APB developer. Twenty other ex-staff from Realtime Worlds also hold posts at the studio. Project MyWorld is believed to have cost Hetherington's company around £1.1 million, close to the £1.26 million selling price of APB to K2 Network. The game is said to be centred around the manipulation of real-world cities in a virtual environment, with strong social elements. Read more... Case studies indicate the recreational use of synthetic cannabis may lead to psychosis that can last for days or months in some cases, according to a study at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in Hawaii. Researchers at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego followed ten patients hospitalized for psychosis apparently induced by the use of synthetic cannabis, commonly known as "Spice," "K2," "Blaze," and "Red X Dawn." These are plant material coated with varying combinations of synthetic cannabinoids, which act on the body in a similar way to chemicals found in cannabis... It's Britain's busiest mountain, but when Rob Penn pushed his bike up Snowdon it was impossible not to be moved by its 'grandeur and desolation' I was given three pieces of advice for climbing Snowdon: set off in the wet, arrive in the dry; don't, on any account, take the Llanberis Path; and leave before 8am. "Right, lads, it's 9.30. The sun's out. We're going up the Llanberis Path," said Tom, our team leader for the day, at the end of breakfast. An hour later, we'd reached the open moorland above the Llyn Peris reservoir. The footpath ahead was thick with hikers of every shape, size, age and ethnicity. I wondered – just as visitors to this wild country in the corner of North Wales must have wondered frequently over the past 200 years – what the hell all these people were doing here. The poet RS Thomas knew Snowdonia well. He wrote that folk come to these mountains "seeking for something unnameable, a lost Eden, a lost childhood: for fulfilment, for escape, for refuge, for conquest of themselves, for peace, for adventure. The list is endless. The hills have all this to give and ... What the fall of Greg Mortenson tells us about America's irrepressible longing for heroes. SMH. The stats are fairly staggering: four million miles of public roads, 140,000 miles of railroad tracks operated by freight carriers, 25,000 miles of navigable waterways, 9,800 coastal and inland waterway facilities, and 5,200 public-use airports, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The distance of roads alone would equal about 10 round-trips to the moon. Choosing how you get your company's products from point A to point B to point C is one of the most important decisions you can make. After all, shipping products faster and cheaper will make for happier customers. That's where logistics come in. If you want to maximize your company's profits, it's important to stay abreast of current trends in the transportation industry. For instance, many companies are beginning to move their supply chain and shipping centers to southern states, where it's more cost effective, according to Christiaan Wolhof, president of the Eagan, Minnesota-based K2 Logistics. "That tendency is continuing very, very rapidly," he notes. Shipping to areas with high--and low --population denisities tend to affect prices, too. Just in case you missed this yesterday, APB, the massively multiplayer online cops-n'-robbers shooter that sunk British developer Realtime Worlds, looks to have won a reprieve. GamersFirst, a publisher of free-to-play MMOs has acquired the intellectual property rights and is handing (re)development duties to US studio, Reloaded Productions. It's not clear whether any of the original team members will be involved, although the good news is, as a consequence of the purchase, outstanding wage and holiday bonus claims will be apparently be met. "APB was a game that had several exceptional features and some brilliant ideas, even though it was plagued by some initial balance and monetization issues," said Bjorn Book-Larsson, CTO and COO of GamersFirst. "We want to take all the unique features of this title, such as its unparalleled character, weapon and car customization systems, and convert the game to a true free-to- play game. We are deep into the planning and early execution stages for this next chapter of APB and we will share more details in the near future. In order to put 'Gamers First' we will also actively engage the community in many aspects of all the planned changes." GamersFirst is the online portal brand of Californian gaming service provider K2 Network which formed in 2001 and is running several MMOs, many of them localised versions of successful Asian titles. Whether or not the company can transfer APB's complex payment set-up and gameplay mechanic into the free-to- play space is a big question. The online experience never really captured the essence of Dave Jones' high concept, though perhaps with scaled down ambitions and a clearer remit, a new studio may have better luck. Meanwhile, it looks like Activision is preparing to sell veteran Liverpool studio Bizarre Creations. Original rumours suggested that the developer might be closing, with the loss of over 200 jobs. However, later reports indicated that the publisher was 'exploring its options' with the developer of titles like Project Gotham Racing, Blur and James Bond: Blood Stone. Gamasutra quoted a spokesperson who commented, "over the past three years since our purchase of Bizarre Creations, the fundamentals of the racing genre have changed significantly. Although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience." The quote continues: "Bizarre is a very talented team of developers, however, because of the broader economic factors impacting the market, we are exploring our options regarding the future of the studio, including a potential sale of the business." Activision bought the previously independent developer in 2007, after its huge succes with the Project Gotham series for Microsoft, but fortunes have been mixed since then. The company's offbeat shooter The Club and its arcade racer, Blur, both attracted critical praise, but failed to win massive audiences. Its most recent title, James Bond: Blood Stone has proved less successful with reviewers. The Guardian is currently seeking comments from both Bizarre Creations and Activision. * Games * PC * Xbox * PS3 * Controversy Keith Stuart guardian.co.uk (C) Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds INDIANOLA, Iowa - Until he tried a marijuana look-alike product called "K2," David Rozga's most dubious decision was getting a Green Bay Packers tattoo on his shoulder.
