Astronaut Cady Coleman makes history as part of a first-ever space-Earth flute duet with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. As NASA astronaut Cady Coleman orbited around Earth aboard the International Space Station, she, along with Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, honored the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned-space flight in an unusual way. The two played a duet together, however, Anderson was not aboard the ship with Coleman. He was down on Earth in [...] Filed under: Concerts and Tours, News PA Photos Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson is set to perform a duet with an astronaut as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight. US astronaut Catherine Coleman will play the flute on the International Space Station on Tuesday (12 April) whilst Anderson joins her via video link on stage at a solo concert in Russia. The pair are set to take on Tull's 1969 instrumental track 'Bouree' and Coleman is said to have been practising for "weeks," according to The Guardian, trying to perfect Anderson's famed one-legged flute soloing. The out-of-this-world performance -- celebrating Yuri Gagarin's inaugural space flight in 1961 -- is said to have been engineered through mutual friend Dayna Steele, with the former radio DJ telling AOL News that it was indeed Coleman's idea in the first place. On Tuesday (12 April), 250 miles above the Earth, US astronaut Catherine Coleman will raise a flute to her lips, performing via video link with Jethro Tull founder Ian Anderson. The one-off duet will honour the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight. While Coleman will be aboard the International Space Station, Anderson will be on stage in Perm, Russia. But this is no cheap tour gimmick: Coleman conceived of the project herself, approaching Anderson through a mutual friend, former radio DJ Dayna Steele. "Kate thought it would be fun to do a duet in space and asked me if I knew how to get in touch with Ian since I've been part of that world," Steele told AOL News. "So I tracked him down." The pair plan to perform Bourée, an instrumental released by Jethro Tull in 1969. It is a reworking of Johann Sebastian Bach's Bourrée in E minor. "I imagine playing music together might be tough," said Steele. ... She has a pennywhistle and an Irish flute from members of The Chieftains, plus a flute from Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. NASA astronaut Cady Coleman says she plays these instruments in the Cupola module of the International Space Station. In years past, the Grammys have been rightfully criticized for being stodgy and out-of-touch -- honoring Jethro Tull over Metallica in 1989, giving Steely Dan the Album of the Year nod over Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP," bestowing that same prize to Herbie Hancock's tribute to Joni Mitchell instead of Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black." Like cranky baby-boomers huffing and puffing over the shallowness of Twitter, the Grammys strenuously emphasized "serious" music over songs that seemed ephemeral or frothy or, worst of all, vulgar. Nasa astronaut Catherine Coleman is hoping to stage her own live "out of this world" concert with her Chieftain and Jethro Tull flautist friends
