Monday was our first day diving and snorkeling the Ngederrak Conservation Area of Palau. The difference in biodiversity along the reef crest was instantly noticeable as we dropped down to 25 feet and surveyed 50 meter transects. Applying belt transects to snorkeling also allowed us to survey the three to five foot reef flat, which differed from our survey experiences in Guam. There was an obvious difference in substrate diversity and marine invertebrate species between Guam and Palau. The American Family Association presented Home Depot's board of directors with his organization's demand that they stop funding gay pride events and other events that promote tolerance and diversity. He had a petition with about 500,000 signatures from people who've vowed to boycott the store unless it joins them in their campaign against gay people. Home Depot Chairman Frank Blake told the AFA to take a hike, stated that Home Depot was proud of its support for diversity, and that's that. Like all big box stores, Home Depot isn't without its problems, but today, they've shown some real backbone. Home Depot Tells AFA To Take A Hike (via Making Light)... Those cities top the four (city size) categories of best cities for college students in a new study published by the American Institute for Economic Research. The AIER ranked cities using 12 criteria: student concentration, student diversity, research capacity, degree attainment, cost of living, art and leisure, city accessibility, creative class, earning potential, entrepreneurial activity, brain gain/drain, and unemployment rate. The analyses were independent. They did not depend on input from the schools. Fargo, ND squeaked onto the list in the No. 20 position for college towns with fewer than 250,000 residents. But one endangered species lives a little closer to home, including yours and mine. Consider all the assaults against women. There are the physical hurts we endure worldwide: rape, abuse, female genital mutilation, trafficking of women and girls. And there's the emotional pressure caused by the daily onslaught of media messages that pummel our sense of self-esteem and make even normal- weight females feel ugly and fat. In many ways the healthy, happy, confident and self-assured female is an endangered species. That's the reasoning behind Endangered Species: Preserving the Female Body, an international summit to be held in New York City on March 18 and 19, 2011, with similar gatherings planned for London and Buenos Aires, Argentina. The summit will challenge the toxic culture that teaches women and girls to hate their bodies and will address what its sponsor, the Women's Therapy Center Institute, describes as a "public mental health epidemic." By encouraging women to "Take back your body. Re-imagine the world," Endangered Species intends to engage policy-makers, corporations, educational instituions, the fashion industry and mainstream media in "creating a new visual culture-one where the diverse, real beauty of women and girls is valued and magnified." If this is a topic you're passionate about but you can't make it to the summit, Endangered Species still invites you to play a role in its efforts. Its Big Ideas, Loved Bodies contest asks entrants to submit a response to the question: **What is one bold action that could make the world truly value the diversity of women and girls' bodies?** The three contestants with the most inspiring and creative ideas will win a trip to New York to present their ideas at the summit before an audience of media representatives, philanthropists, public intellectuals, activists, therapists, and others who want to help implement change. For additional information on the summit and the contest, go to EndangeredSpeciesWomen.org. The contest deadline is December 1, 2010. **Related articles: ** * What Women Love About Their Bodies * Do Women Love Their Bodies?
