We were mostly happy with the thoughtful Hargreaves Report on copyright in the UK, which made a bunch of modest, but intelligent suggestions on copyright law. Our only complaint was that it didn't go far enough, but in today's political climate on copyright issues, it went much further than most. It's been interesting to see the reaction. The industry hasn't reacted quite as negatively as I expected, in part because they're so cluelessly relieved that the report didn't suggest implementing "fair use" rules. And for those who recognize there are problems in the system, the report is seen as a vindication of their views. John Naughton has a nice piece for The Guardian, noting his surprise at the quality of the report, and putting this lovely summary on the state of today's copyright laws: > _ Hallelujah! At last we are getting somewhere. The notion that laws framed in an era when copying was difficult, imperfect and expensive could work in an era when copying was effortless, perfect and cheap was a proposition that only imbeciles and industry lobbyists could entertain. But up to now, our politicians subscribed to it. _ Nice to see that sort ... A fresh inquiry into the UK's intellectual property regime is surprisingly tough, intelligent and radical Watching British politicians engage with technology companies is a bit like listening to maiden aunts wondering if they would look better in thongs. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, to name just two such aunts, fantasised that Microsoft was cool, and spent years trying to associate themselves (and New Labour) with Bill Gates – even going to the lengths of making the Microsoft boss an honorary knight. Then we had the equally ludicrous spectacle of Cameron and co believing that Google is cool, which is why its CEO, Eric Schmidt – who for these purposes is the Google Guys' representative on Earth – was an honoured guest at Cameron's first party conference as leader. Given that, it's only a matter of time before Ed Miliband discovers that Facebook is the new cool. And so it will go on. Cameron's worship of Google did, however, have one tangible result. Mortified by the Google Guys' assertion that the UK's intellectual property regime would have made it impossible to launch their company in the UK, he decided to commission an inquiry into said regime under ... [NPR via Daily What] More » He reinvented the image of the road haulage business They celebrated his business with pop songs, a fanclub of tens of thousands, souvenirs from Corgi toys to oil paintings, and there were cartoons and television series about his huge, lumbering juggernauts. Yet Edward Stobart, whose glossy Eddie Stobart lorries are familiar sights on British motorways, was the antithesis of a big, brash, Yorkie-bar trucker. A small, neat, self-effacing man, with a pronounced stammer, Stobart, who has died aged 56, had a vision of an ultra-reliable operator with smart and disciplined drivers, working to tight margins that enabled him to transform a handful of lorries doing local fertiliser runs into a 10,00-vehicle logistics business by the time he sold out in 2004. He was born at Hesket Newmarket, near Carlisle, the third child of EP "Steady Eddie" Stobart. His father, a lay preacher, started an agricultural supplies business in 1957, selling fertiliser equipment and acquiring lorries to do so, later adding a farm shop. The young Edward – always called that to differentiate him from his father – showed his commercial savvy in his teens by buying railway sleepers and cutting them up to sell for firewood. ... New York Times: > "It is a short walk," Vladimir Nabokov said, speaking of writers and critics, "from the hallelujah to the hoot." It's an especially short walk if you're a pop singer who's written a less-than-electric protest song. Think of Michael Jackson and "Earth Song," or 4 Non Blondes and "What's Up," or Sting and "Russians." Each of them, along with "We Are the World," will be in heavy rotation on the Pandora channel in hell. > > The lively British rock critic Dorian Lynskey — he writes for The Guardian, among other publications — spends some time in his new book, "33 Revolutions Per Minute," chewing over why most protest songs are heaped with scorn. They can be "didactic, crass or plain boring," he writes. Those who warble them onstage can seem "shrill or annoying or egotistical." Read and comment. From nytimes.com.
