The PlayStation Vita may be region free, a senior Sony executive has claimed. Michael Denny, vice president of Sony Worldwide Studios, revealed to IGN that he was not aware of any region-locking technology for the new handheld's physical game format, NVG cards. By contrast, Nintendo's 3DS is region-locked - only the second Nintendo handheld to do so, following the DSi. Sony's last handheld, the PSP, was essentially region-free too, as is the PS3 (although the option to use a hardware lock is present in the system). Read more... The PlayStation Vita aims to provide the most comprehensive portable gaming experience around. Here's a preview of what gamers can expect before the end of 2011. Nintendo has unveiled a new console with an attention-getting tablet-like controller, complete with its own 6.2-inch touchscreen. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the next title in Nintendo's critically acclaimed Zelda series, will come out in time for the holiday season, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto said. The Legend of Zelda series has usually been a very safe bet for Nintendo and regularly brings the company a lot of cash. Most titles in the series have achieved a score of 90 or higher on review aggregator site Metacritic, and the games usually set the bar for adventure games on home gaming consoles. A lot of the tropes originally introduced in the Legend of Zelda series are present in other games like Okami and Darksiders. Miyamoto made the comments at Nintendo's press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Calif. today. The release is in conjunction with the series' 25th anniversary, commemorating the release of the original Legend of Zelda game for the Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening will be available on the Nintendo 3DS' eShop as part of the Legend of Zelda's 25th anniversary. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords will be available for the DSiware store for free for DSi and 3DS users for free. Four new games across Nintendo's shops New Game Downloads Invite You to Walk Tall and Sleep Tight. Sometimes ordinary actions can lead you to extraordinary places. Case in point: this week's lineup of new downloadable games for the Wii™ and Nintendo DSi™ systems. In GO Series Picdun, a dungeon-themed RPG for the Nintendo DSiWare™ service, the simple act of walking can help [...] Nintendo of America will launch its slick eShop with very little new content for the Nintendo 3DS, leaning heavily on vintage Game Boy titles and games previously made available for Nintendo DSi, Wired.com has learned. The downloadable games shop for the company's 3-D handheld will become available after a June 6 3DS system update. While it [...] A new survey by Goo Research has found that concerns over price is the primary reason for low sales of the 3DS in Japan, followed by current satisfaction with the DS/DSi. Although the 3DS initially broke records in Japan, weekly sales quickly began to drop and the hardware currently sells approximately half that of the best- selling PSP format. Sales in the West appear to show a similar drop-off. According to a translation by website Andriasang, the new survey polled 1,110 people - with a 60.5 per cent split towards females - and asked them why they had not yet bought a 3DS. Read more... With the DSi and 3DS taking over, Nintendo is lowering the price of its DS Lite to $99.99. Nintendo will reduce the price of its low-end DS Lite portable game system to $100 effective Sunday, June 5, the gamemaker said on Tuesday. Released in 2006, the DS Lite was a much-needed redesign of the original 2004 Nintendo DS hardware. Sporting a sleek, glossy form factor and bright backlit screens, the $130 device was instrumental [...] Return to Adventure Island this week on the Virtual Console, or just go as fast as you can on WiiWare. Four new games across Nintendo's shops A true classic makes a long-awaited debut on the Virtual Console. Word finding title arrives on the DSi Six new games across Nintendo's shops Nintendo faced a hurdle in its hopes to retake some of its share in mobile gaming from Apple on Thursday after NPD results showed that the 3DS wasn't outselling its predecessor. The company shipped 194,000 3DS systems in April but moved 257,000 of the DSi the same month. A statement from the console maker argued the gap, despite it being the first full month for the 3DS, was due to the "staying power" of the older systems and the recent dual Pokemon games driving sales.... Nintendo has pushed back the release of the download store and internet browser for Nintendo 3DS. The update, which will allow 3DS owners to purchase a variety of downloadable content, will arrive in a firmware update on June 6, Nintendo said early Thursday morning. Nintendo said at the launch of 3DS that it would deliver the [...] The release of the 3DS's eShop and other online feature are to miss their promised May launch, but only by a week - as Nintendo prepares its new services for E3 week. The North American and European update will be available on June 7, with the Japanese update a day earlier on June 6, according to Japanese magazine Famitsu - as translated by website Andriasang. Nintendo of Europe has confirmed that the eShop and Internet browser will be included in the update, but has remained uncommitted on other features such as the portable Virtual Console and the ability to transfer DSiWare downloadable titles from a DSi to the 3DS.
