Sony announced that its PlayStation store is back online with lots of new content. The company's Web presence is almost back to normal after an attack on Sony's network breached millions of user accounts. The store has been down for more than a month. The company has put up dozens of new downloadable files on the network, including updates, add-on content and a playable demo of Red Faction: Armageddon that has been available on the Xbox since May 3. The versatile magnet gun marries beautifully with the series' signature destructibility to make Red Faction: Armageddon an exciting and explosive shooter. Red Faction: Armageddon magnetizes Chris Watters in this video review. One of the game's unlockable visual modes (2:02) THQ has pulled out the stops on its "transmedia" strategy, where it coordinates media related to its big games. That strategy will hit a high point around late May when the SyFy channel airs its Red Faction Origins film as THQ launches its Red Faction Armageddon video game. Danny Bilson, a 20-year film writer who is now the head of marketing and development at THQ, is one of the architects of that strategy at one of the biggest traditional video game makers. In a speech and subsequent interview yesterday at the MI6 game marketing conference, Bilson said that transmedia deals like the SyFy one are a great way to extend awareness of a game brand and help with overall sales. They're also a way for game makers to concentrate their biggest bets in a single title rather than spend a little bit of time and attention across a bunch of games. "It's symbiotic," Bilson said. "SyFy wants to be associated with games. They need games to market their movies. We get two hours of TV time. This is a complete transmedia partnership." With transmedia (or the use of one story or intellectual property across multiple media), ... As in previous games in the series, Red Faction: Armageddon will center on wanton destruction. In a new video that touches on the franchise's history, developers discuss the ways they hope Armageddon will improve upon its predecessors. __ Unique Album Experience Arranged by Composer, Multi-Instrumentalist and Music Producer Brian Reitzell. See how Mars got Martians Darius uses his magnet gun creatively to get rid of some alien scum. The cumbersome sandbox structure has been binned and a ridiculously inventive array of weapons has been added If you've ever played a Red Faction game, you'll know the main draw of the series is the Geo-Mod engine. The franchise has seen changes over the years but its remaining constant is how Volition's superb physics engine makes blowing things to smithereens addictive, compelling and delightful fun. The developer seemingly lost sight of this in Red Faction: Guerrilla in which the series changed from a first-person shooter (FPS) to a third-person sandbox game. While players could cause untold havoc, the fact they had to spend a lot of time trundling around the game's massive map became a chore. The environments looked nice, sure, but the most enjoyment to be had always involved demolishing things and the lengthy journeys between missions detracted from the game's fun. Perhaps realising this, Volition have binned the sandbox structure for their latest title, Red Faction: Armageddon. The game is still a third-person adventure, but the emphasis is now more geared towards shooter action and Armageddon is all the better for it. In the hands-on time I had with it, there wasn't a space-buggy in ... One of the games unlockable visual modes! Volition-developed PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 shooter pushed back a week; downloadable demo still set for May 3. The free playable demo of Red Faction: Armageddon will be available on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade on May 3.
