NEW HAVEN -- It was a chest bump more than than 10 years in the making. Avon parents, teachers and students can expect a different learning environment when classes resume next fall. Bigger class sizes, fewer programs and teachers, a pay-to-play program for athletes, and no more outdoor learning center will be just a few of the changes for the district. The clock was about to strike midnight, but not for the Carmel softball team. The Class 4A No. 1 Greyhounds finished off a weather-delayed 2-0 win over No. 4 Lake Central in the Harrison Semistate final at 11:57 p.m. Saturday, putting Carmel in the state finals for the first time since 1997. The Greyhounds (27-2) will play Avon (26-7) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Ben Davis.
