Chris Wragge talks to Newsweek columnist Joanne Lipman about when you should and shouldn't tap in to your 401K. It's the people you meet that make travel the rich, vibrant experience that it is. They shape our memories more than the locations themselves. They can make a bad place good, or a great place bad. They teach us about what we like or don't like in others. They shine lights on our ignorance and [...] June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Bloomberg Government's Megan Hughes reports pension and retirement groups are launching a lobbying campaign on behalf of the 70 million Americans who contribute to 401k plans through work. Congressional economists estimate the five-year price tag for 401k tax breaks at $294 billion. The Retirement Planning Lobby estimates the costs at $115 billion over five-years. BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have suspended payments to their employees' pension benefits and 401K plans during the NFL labor dispute and potentially the rest of the year, the team's chief executive officer confirmed in a statement emailed to The Associated Press on Tuesday. Russ Brandon adds the team will review whether to reinstate payments for 2011 based on "our financial performance." Brandon says employees had been notified that the 401K plan was being amended so that all team contributions would be discretionary for this year. The company keeps its employees satisfied, providing 100 percent of healthcare coverage for employees and their families, and also offers an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and a generous 401K plan. ReadyTalk goes a step further by addressing the stress levels and mental health of its employees. Yoga classes and massage services frequent the ReadyTalk offices, and the company also covers part of its employees' gym memberships. "People taking care of themselves are going to have higher levels of energy and going to be more balanced in terms of work life," says Dan King, CEO of ReadyTalk. "All of these things are thought about in the context of what's in our interest and what's in our employee's interest." Company organized ski outings to Winter Park don't hurt, either. Every employee at Projectline Services has an opportunity to shape the direction of the company. **"You spend a lot **of time working with the people around you, more so sometimes than you get to spend with your family," says Mike Kichline, CEO of Projectline Services. "You have to like being around them." That's why Projectline Services established an employee panel that serves as a liason between employees and the executives, helping make benefit decisions and suggestions to improve the company. "Everybody has an opportunity to help shape the direction of the company," Kichline says. "We're very open when we address some of the challenges in front of us. They all have a stake in trying to improve the business." Benefits include a generous 401K program, continuing education programs, and full medical, dental, vision, disability insurance, and one hell of a Christmas party. Medical Present Value incentivizes its workers with insurance coverage, stock options, and a generous paid time-off policy. **The first person hired** by the founders of Medical Present Value was Allison Halley, currently the vice president of human resources. "I think that that alone speaks volumes about the type of company culture that the founders wanted to build, that they invested in an HR professional so early on in the company's life cycle," Halley says. MPV believes that its workers and salespeople are its biggest asset, and they look to reward and encourage employees whenever possible. MPV's employee compensation package is pretty hefty: medical, dental, life, and disability insurance are all provided, as well as 401K options and a generous paid time-off policy. While the company uses trips, awards, and extravagant parties to incentivize employees to excel, MPV also offers stock options to each employee, making everybody in the company an owner. This law firm tips the scales for its employees, offering remote work arrangements and benefits for part-time employees. **In the entire history** of Nukk-Freeman & Cerra, only one attorney has ever left the firm voluntarily. One of the prime reasons behind this otherwise spotless retention record is NFC's extremely flexible work arrangement policy, allowing its workers to achieve a balance between professional and personal lives. Thanks to its technology infrastructure, workers can work remotely; lawyers might only come to work three days a week. "The beauty of it is that on their days off, we don't bother them," says Suzanne Cerra, president of NFC. "If a client needs something on a day where one of our lawyers might be unavailable, somebody else on the team covers for them." Employees don't mind picking up the slack, especially since NFC extends full benefits, such as health insurance and its 401K plan, to part-time employees. If someone shot a wildlife film about Middle-earth, it would probably look a lot like The Troll Hunter, a Norwegian mockumentary that has the internet buzzing. An impeccable production with a brilliant concept, The Troll Hunter successfully blends scares with dry humor. The movie sags slightly during some flaccid interludes, and the plot loses some steam [...] Might have taken it a bit too far this time aye Nick?? Now we all have a way of personally congratulating Mariah Carey when she finally gives birth to her twin babies! I look at it as a fight between people with funded retirements and unfunded retirements. > > If I have saved enough to support my lifestyle in retirement, then I have a funded retirement. If my neighbor who teaches in public school wants to support a similar lifestyle based on her pension, then she has a retirement that is somewhat unfunded. That is, as of now, her pension plan has only about fifty cents for every dollar of promised benefits. > > Social Security and Medicare also are unfunded. ... > > Down the road, someone is going to get the shaft. It could be my neighbor, it could be me, or it could be both of us. That is, people who are relying on the unfunded systems--public sector pensions, Social Security, and Medicare-- might find their benefits cut. Or people who are relying on personal savings could wind up having those savings taxed away in order to address the shortfalls in the public systems. Or all ... ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | Do you love Social Security? Apparently most Americans do, because its considered the third rail of American politics: touch it and you die. We Americans love Social Security because it provides income for life and cost of living increases (your 401K cant do that), and its guaranteed by the government and isnt at the mercy of the stock market or the high fees of Wall Street fat cats. The liberal Jacob Weisberg makes the case for Paul Ryan: Ryan's proposal to turn Medicare into a voucher provides an easy political target. But it's hard to make a principled liberal case for the program in its current form.
