Actor Greg Grunberg, formerly of NBC's "Heroes," chats about tackling the fun side of love, sex and marriage in the new romantic TV comedy "Love Bites." (TODAY) 10 tonight NBC This new series, with three vignettes per episode, presents a thoroughly modern spin on issues of love, marriage, dating and sex. Becki Newton ("Ugly Betty," right), Constance Zimmer ("Entourage") and Greg Grunberg ("Heroes") are regular cast members. There are a lot of novelty acts from the '80s we would like to forget (ahem, Yakov Smirnoff), but Judy Tenuta isn't one of them. We can still remember her on MTV, waking us up in between Billy Ocean videos, demanding that we worship her as a goddess in that foghorn voice of hers. As if we needed the hard sell. There's just something fundamentally lovable about a girl who can play the accordion. Once a high-flying prospect, _Love Bites_ was prominently featured at NBC's updront presentation last May when it was assigned the Thursday 10 PM slot for fall. But in the summer, the series was pushed to midseason after a series of setbacks, including the pregnancy of star Becki Newton, the decision by creator/executive producer Cindy Chupack to step down from day-to-day showrunner duties and the exit of the other original star, Jordana Spiro, because of her commitment to TBS' _My Boys_. The order for the show was subsequently cut from 13 to 9. With _The Paul Reiser Show _recently launching for what became a two-week run and _Love Bites_ getting slated, comedy_ Friends With Benefits _now remains the only freshman NBC comedy that has not been scheduled yet. Meanwhile, Newton has a pilot in second position, CBS' untitled Filgos comedy, which could be picked up to series before _Love Bites _premieres. The romantic comedy series, which was scrapped from its 2010 premiere plan, is now scheduled to debut on NBC this summer. (The premiere ranked as NBC's lowest-rated in-season comedy series premiere ever with a 1.1/3 in adults 18-49, and the show tumbled 18% to a 0.9/3 last night.) Even ads for _The Paul Reiser Show_ were annoying even though I like him. I understand that NBC's new brass was "reluctant" but felt the network "had to replace" _Reiser_ with _Office_ repeats. An insider just told me: "We were hopeful about Paul's show but we had to make the decision to protect _The Office_ since we have very important episodes in the coming weeks with Steve Carell's exit and Will Ferrell's guest shots." Also worth noting is that NBC's new admin also is "still trying to deal with several other shows carried over from the previous regime" besides _Reiser_: _Friends With Benefits_ and _Love Bites_. This statement to me from inside NBC sums it up: "Bob Greenblatt inherited nothing but shit."
