Superb support from Matt Damon, though I fear this movie The Coen brothers' Oscar-nominated remake of the classic John Wayne Western is among this week's platinum picks on DVD. Shocking violence and dry humour punctuate the sumptuous cinematography in True Grit, as in all the Coens' best work. Rating: * * * * * RATING: (POLITE APPLAUSE) Another Year No movie for Mike Leigh beginners, this story of a happy couple and a succession of their desperately unhappy friends is slow, depressing and wholly lacking in narrative drive. Canadian Press film expert John McKay says the two versions of this western classic share many similarities.
