Last night I taught a class via Skillshare (disclosure: Founder Collective is an investor) about how to raise a seed round. After a long day I wasn't particularly looking forward to it, but it turned out to be a lot of fun and I stayed well past the scheduled end time. I think it worked well because the audience was full of people actually starting companies, and they came well prepared (they were all avid readers of tech blogs and had seemed to have done a lot of research). I sketched some notes for the class which I'm posting below. I've written ad nausea about venture financing so hadn't planned to blog more on the topic. But since I wrote up these notes already, here they are: Justin Bieber's girlfriend Selena Gomez is in hospital after complaining about nausea and a severe headache on Thursday (09Jun11).The singer/actress taped an interview for U.S. TV's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday afternoon, but felt... She's in the prime of life with a killer career, but Selena Gomez may need to take some time off after being rushed to the hospital last night (June 9). The "Ramona & Beezus" babe was taken to a Los Angeles hospital directly after her interview on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." During the taping, Selena reportedly complained about a massive headache and nausea, according to TMZ. The nature of Gomez's condition is still unknown, but she's still undergoing tests and receiving medical care. Selena Gomez is undergoing tests after being rushed to a L.A.-area hospital on Thursday night (June 9), TMZ reports. No word [...] The New College of Humanities founder has exposed higher education as a luxury consumable for the middle classes This has been a purple week for red rage. The hirsute philosopher, AC Grayling, may call himself a "pinko" but his embryo London humanities university in Bedford Square has induced apoplexy in the old left. He and 13 high-octane scholars are having their lectures "targeted". The Guardian is in ideological meltdown. Foyles has been hit by a smoke bomb. The Kropotkin of our age, Terry Eagleton, claims to be fit to vomit. Bloomsbury has not been so excited since semen was spotted on Vanessa Bell's dress. Britain's professors, lecturers and student trade unionists appear to be united in arms against what they most hate and fear: academic celebrity, student fees, profit and loss, one-to-one tutorials and America. Grayling's New College of the Humanities may be no more than an egotists' lecture agency, better located at Heathrow Terminal 5, but the rage it has evoked is fascinating. What Grayling has done is caricature the British university. He has cartooned it as no longer an academic community but a high-end luxury consumable for the middle classes, operating roughly half a year, ... Seniors citizens smokin' silver haze? But the Material Data Safety Sheet for Simple Green reveals that the formula contains 2-Butoxyethanol -- a petrochemical solvent. 2-Butoxyethanol is defined as "harmful" by the European Union classification system. The fledgling collective mirrors a nationwide trend as more and more senior citizens turn to marijuana, legal or not, to ease the aches and pains of aging. Many members of the 2-year-old collective keep a low profile, but others grow seedlings on their patios and set up workshops to show other seniors how to turn the marijuana leaves into tea, milk and a vapor that can be inhaled for relief from everything from chemotherapy-related nausea to multiple sclerosis to arthritis.
