June 10 - Tom Hanks brings the down-but-not-out "Larry Crowne" to Berlin. Doug MacLaurin reports. On his Twitter account, Tom Hanks just debuted _Employee Of The Month_, a new trailer for _Larry Crowne,_ the film he co-wrote, directed and starred in with Julia Roberts. Universal releases it July 1. It's only the second feature Hanks has directed, after making his debut on 1996's That Thing You Do! That film was so charming that I'm eager to see what Hanks has come up with here. Studio sez that though the trailer was called _Employee of the Month_, the movie will be released as_ Larry Crowne_. Greengrass was among a short list of directors for the gig but I'm told Sony Pictures has just offered him the picture and talks are about to begin. Phillips was the skipper of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama who gave himself up as a hostage to Somali pirates to keep his crew from having to leave the ship with them. After three days of being held hostage alone with the armed pirates in a small lifeboat, Phillips was saved by Navy SEALs who staged a dramatic rescue that left the captain unharmed, three captors dead and another in custody. The film is based on Phillips' memoir _A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea_, which was published last year by Hyperion. Sony Pictures' _The Social Network_ team of Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey are producing. Hanks signed on in March after sparking to a script written by __ Billy Ray. A few different people pointed us to variations on the story of how Tom Hanks' son Colin Hanks is funding a documentary about Tower Records via Kickstarter. With plenty of time to go, he's already passed his goal of raising $50,000. Of course, he was significantly helped along in reaching that goal thanks to a tweet from his father. The project sounds nice enough (as someone who spent a ton of time and money at Tower Records as a kid, I'm certainly interested in the documentary itself), but what struck me about this is the _comments_ found under the THR article linked above. They're almost all _angry_ that someone like Colin Hanks would use Kickstarter for something like this. Reliance also made first look deals with the production companies of CAA clients that included Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey, Brett Ratner, George Clooney and Jay Roach. He plugged in India-based UTV with Overbrook partners Will Smith and James Lassiter, and also M. Night Shyamalan. The Cuban-born Nunez had been at CAA since 1991, brought in by Mike Ovitz and Ron Meyer to find offshore funds for film. The agency confirms he's no longer there, but had no information on where he went. Stepping out for the premiere of his latest film "Larry Crowne," Tom Hanks was spotted arriving at the Vue Westfield in London, England on Monday evening (June 6). The "Big" actor looked mighty dapper in a black suit and tie as he posed for pictures on the red carpet before heading inside to join fellow celebrity guests such as David Hasselghoff, Sophie Ellis Baxter and Ronnie Wood. As for the movie, "Larry Crowne" hits US theaters on July 1st and surrounds a middle-aged man (played by Hanks) who reinvents himself by going back to college. He befriends a group of outcasts and also falls in love with his speech professor Mercedes Tainot (played by Julia Roberts).
