**For some businesses,** social impact can be measured by the size of the checks they write. For others, the mission is woven directly into the business. **The Classic Example** Founded in 1988, Seventh Generation started as a mail-order company for green household products. Under the leadership of CEO Jeffrey Hollender, it became a $150 million brand. Still, the company's recent history illustrates the challenges faced by socially ambitious, for-profit entrepreneurs. In 2009, Hollender became chairman of the board and handed CEO duties to former Pepsi executive Chuck Maniscalco. A year later, after a controversial deal with Walmart, Seventh Generation's board announced it was ending its "employment relationship" with Hollender. Maniscalco stepped aside, and the company is now led by John Replogle, formerly of Burt's Bees. **The Model Works Best When** 1. The product is the social vehicle. In other words, the product or service being sold triggers the social or environmental change. 2. The user has the ability to pay most, if not all, of the purchase price. In the best cases, the product or service is a response to market demand. In others, a third party--for example, a school district or hospital--helps make up for the user's lack ... Spending a little quality time with her younger sister, Miley Cyrus enjoyed a family day as the two were spotted picking up food from Sharky's in Los Angeles on Monday (April 11). The "Hannah Montana" star stayed casual in ripped denim jeans, a vintage Harley Davidson t-shirt and a studded leather jacket while Noah opted for TOMs slip-on shoes and a printed sweater over her denim attire. With the two Cyrus ladies toting their own iPhones in hand, Miley tweeted of the day's doings, "Getting my nails done with @theBrandiCyrus @partyyandnoiee and my mommy :) girls day is the best!" The outing comes as Miss Cyrus recently revealed that she's lined up for her first appearance on Oprah since 2007 - with the sure-to-be juicy episode set to air on Wednesday, April 13th. Why millions decided to go one day without shoes. Anne V participates in the barefoot challenge in support of the annual TOMS Shoes campaign "One Day Without Shoes" at NYC's Pier 45 on Tuesday morning (April 4). One Day Without Shoes is the day we raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child's life by taking off our own. [...] As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm really looking forward to the 2011 keynote speakers at South by Southwest (SXSW), the week long music, film and interactive festival held each year in Austin, the great town I'm lucky enough to live and work in. I previously mentioned keynote speaker Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS Shoes. Next up on my list of speakers to catch at SXSW is 21-year-old Seth Priebatsch, the "Chief Ninja" of the Boston startup SCVNGR. After dropping out of Princeton, Priebatsch created SCVNGR, a social location- based gaming platform for cell phones. The app has a consumer and enterprise component. Companies, educational institutions and other organizations can build challenges, the core unit of the app, on SCVNGR from the web. Users open the app to see the places around their current location that are enterprise clients (current clients include GameStop and The Smithsonian), do the simple challenges to earn points, unlock badges and claim rewards at those clients' businesses, such as 15 percent off their bill. SCVNGR, backed by Google Ventures, has grown to 60 employees, and plans to hit one million users by year's end. In September, Priebatsch was ... Since my company is based in Austin, we get pretty excited about South by Southwest (SXSW), the weeklong annual music, film and interactive festival held in town every March. I'm particularly excited about 2011's keynote speakers for the interactive portion (surprise, surprise). First up on my list of speakers to not miss is Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS Shoes. After traveling to Argentina in 2006 and befriending children that were living in poverty and without shoes, Mycoskie created TOMS Shoes, a company that matches every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. This one-for-one business model made it possible for his company to give its one millionth pair of new shoes to a child in need, just four years after its founding. I appreciate companies that have a deeper motive beyond making money. I started my time management business with the message that time is fleeting, and we should all strive to spend our time - and lives - on things that matter. While I'm not necessarily saving lives or helping impoverished children like Mycoskie is, I appreciate his spirit of goodwill while still running a ...
