CenturyLink Inc., the fixed-line phone and Internet company, agreed to buy Savvis Inc. for $2.5 billion to add so-called cloud-computing services for business customers. CenturyLink agreed to acquire Savvis for about $2.5 billion in cash and stock as the telecommunications provider looks to expand business services. CenturyLink will acquire Savvis, a hosting and cloud computing provider with big established enterprise customers, in a deal valued at $2.5 billion. Hosting companies continue to be gobbled up. ADTRAN's first quarter 2011 earnings were well ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 6 cents and the year-ago earnings by 23 cents on strong revenue. CenturyLink finally completed its $12 billion merger with Denver-based Qwest Communications, creating the third-largest landline operator in the U.S. The merger between CenturyLink and Qwest officially closed today, creating the nation's third largest phone company in a world where being a phone company means less and less. I spoke with a company executive about making cloud acquisitions and the ever-growing demand for bandwidth. CenturyLink completed its acquisition of Qwest today, just under a year after the two companies announced plans to merge.
