My Make column "Memento Mori" talks about the giddy, delightful vertigo I experience when I realize how fast and how far technology has come, and how fast it's moving: I'm often puzzled by how satisfying older technology is. What a treat it is to muscle around an ancient teletype, feeding it new-old paper-tape or rolls of industrial paper with the weight of a bygone era. What pleasure I take from the length of piano roll I've hung like a banner from a high place in every office I've had since 2000. How much satisfaction I derive from the racing works of the 1965 mechanical watch I received as a Father's Day present this year, audible in rare moments of ambient silence or when my hand strays near my ear, going tick-tick-tick-tick like the pattering heart of a pet mouse held loosely in my hand. The standard explanation for the attractiveness of this old stuff is simply that They Made It Better In The Old Days. But this isn't necessarily or even usually true. Some of my favorite old technologies are as poorly made as today's throwaway products from China's Pearl River Delta sweatshops. Take ... Finish sniper doesn't sound finished with hockey, while goalie hopes vertigo is behind him The Cluster: > Pedro Canale spent a majority of the past two years deep in the jungles of South America, listening for the earth's heartbeat. Curious about música folklórica, the traditional rhythms and melodies of indigenous peoples from the Andes and the Amazon, he flung himself across the bottom half of the continent, stretching out from his native Argentina, up the mountain ranges, through Chile and Bolivia and Peru. "I first traveled to the highest region of Argentina, when I rediscovered the folklorica of the Andes – the pan flute and charango," says Canale. "I started to be involved in this kind of sound. Then I returned to Bolivia, and last January I was in Peru, too. I went to the jungle in Peru, the Amazonas river, with a community of natives who are Shipibo, and [learned about] the culture." > > It was during these trips that he began collecting sounds for his music as Chancha via Circuito, capturing bug chirps to inject in songs or pitch down to blend into entomological beats. On a jaunt to Coroico, Bolivia, he caught birdcalls in the jungle while marveling at waterfalls, snakes, mango trees, wild pineapples. A chorus ... Marc DeLuca is the new baseball coach at St. Raymond HS in the Bronx. He took over for longtime Ravens skipper Ron Patnosh, who stepped down after suffering from vertigo. DeLuca almost didn't get the job because he missed games as an assistant, but it's his team now. And he's got Patnosh's support. Filed under: Concerts and Tours, News PA Photos U2 might be smashing records with their 360 tour, but Bono isn't content with the reaction to his band's club-orientated singles. "Look, sometimes our audience isn't as groovy as we'd like," he told Rolling Stone (via Gibson). "'Get on Your Boots,' as it was released, is a sort of crossover, half-club, half-indie-rock record. People are not sure about the club side of U2. They want 'Vertigo,' and when we did this the last time -- with 'Discotheque,' from Pop -- they didn't like it either." Their 2009 album 'No Line on the Horizon' has seen over 1m sales in the US, according to Reuters, but it remains a disappointing figure considering their track record. The first single 'Get on Your Boots' only made No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. U2 are "at the absolute limit" with their 360 Degree tour, and are "as big" as they could "ever get". NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Sergei Kostitsyn scored two goals, both in the first period, as the Nashville Predators beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 on Thursday night. _Associated Press - March 23, 2011 8:45 PM ET _ DALLAS (AP) - The Anaheim Ducks activated Jonas Hiller off the injured list after the goalie missed 15 games because of vertigo symptoms. Williams, L.A.'s second-leading scorer, has a dislocated shoulder and is expected to miss at least three to four weeks. Hiller, the Ducks' starting goaltender, practices with team and could return soon after a bout with vertigo that has sidelined him for all but 31 minutes since All-Star break. A playoff road that appeared difficult but doable became tougher for the goal- starved Kings, while the Ducks' precarious hopes took a turn for the better.
