SCE delayed the release of MotorStorm Apocalypse from its scheduled April 12th date Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed that off-road racer MotorStorm: Apocalypse has been delayed due to sensitivities over the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The fourth entry in the PlayStation-exclusive series is set in an unnamed American city, although one clearly based on San Francisco. The story revolves around a series of earthquakes and destruction, which the game's characters use as the background for their races. A statement sent to GamesIndustry.biz by SCE Europe states that, "We are shocked and saddened to see the impact of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues within the Sony family, living and working throughout Japan. BAFTA has all the expected releases in there – apart from one rather massive exception, of course BAFTA has announced the nominations for the 2011 GAME British Academy Video Games Awards. 44 contenders appear amid the categories, but it's Ubisoft's historical adventure Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood leading the pack with an impressive seven nominations. Behind it, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Heavy Rain garner six each, while Mass Effect 2 manages five. There is one glaring omission, though. Rockstar's epic Western, Red Dead Redemption, one of the most critically acclaimed releases of the year, appears only in the publicly-voted 'GAME Award of 2010'. The publisher apparently decided not to submit the game to BAFTA for consideration. Elsewhere, I'm pleased to see the excellent Windows Phone 7 platformer Mush among the 'Ones to watch' nominations. We've been following the game since witnessing its inception at the X48 Game Jam last year, so good luck to Angry Mango. The award ceremony takes place at the London Hilton on March 16. Here's the full list. Let's have a think about potential winners... **Action** Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Ubisoft Montreal) Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts/DICE) BioShock 2 (2K Games/2K Marin) Call of Duty: Black Ops ... First Solar Inc. has signed a power purchase agreement with Edison International's regulated subsidiary Southern California Edison. Trinigy further advances its cross-platform Vision Game Engine with support for the next generation portable entertainment system from SCE Scientists have debated the dinosaur's diet for decades with one camp arguing that it fed by scavenging and the other defending it as a fearsome hunter The reputation of Tyrannosaurus rex has been restored to its former glory by scientists in the latest round of a debate over the creature's predatory credentials. At stake is the prehistoric beast's dining habits, with some paleontologists claiming that Tyrannosaurus rex was not a fearsome hunter, but rather a pitiful scavenger that survived on the carcasses of dinosaurs that died at the claws of others or succumbed to disease or old age. Those in the scavenger camp, including Jack Horner at the Museum of the Rockies in Montana, who served as technical adviser on the Jurassic Park movies, claim that despite the Tyrannosaur's steak knife teeth and muscular build, its bulky legs, apparently poor eyesight and pathetic forearms made for an abysmal hunter. But the latest study by researchers at the Zoological Society of London reaffirms T. rex as an apex predator in Late Cretaceous North America, on the grounds that smaller, more numerous carnivores would have sniffed out and stripped bare any carcasses before T. rex had time to find ... SCE boss Kaz Hirai says console's November sales were in line with expectations, 15 million units still goal for fiscal year ending March 31. (Telecompaper) Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) presented its next-generation portable entertainment system, the NGP, during a press conference in Tokyo. To be launched at the end of 2011, the device will feature both wireless and 3G network connectivity. The device will come with a high-performance CPU / GPU, a multi-touch 5-inch organic OLED as the front display, and a multi-touch pad on the rear. Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called 'LiveArea,' where users can meet other players, have access to the latest information on games from developers and publishers via PlayStation Network, and view an 'Activity' log. SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilising the PlayStation Network. The new application called 'Near,' developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed on the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing or what they were playing recently. NGP adopts a new game medium, a small, flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. NGP will also come equipped with two cameras as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass. PlayStation Suite ... KRK-TR writes "Sony Ericsson has unveiled the first 'PlayStation phone,' called the Xperia Play. The device resembles a regular smart phone but has gaming buttons that slide out from beneath the screen." Eurogamer got some hands-on time with the device, and they had this to say: "The recessed digital controls are precise and responsive but have a hard, microswitch-style 'click' to them which contrasts with the soft, springy touch of a PSP or a Dual Shock pad. There are left and right shoulder buttons recessed into the handset - you need to find these with the tips of your index fingers, rather than the joints as you're used to. The most interesting inputs are the twin circular touch- pads between the buttons. These effectively replace the on-screen virtual analogue sticks that blight so many smartphone games - and they do the job well. ... Despite the nominal similarity to PSPgo, it doesn't bear any family resemblance to or design hallmarks of SCE products, and indeed is only passingly identifiable as a Sony Ericsson phone. It's very much an anonymous Android handset with the added novelty of game controls." Read more of this story at Slashdot. Promising fans Sony's next generation portable was designed for the long haul, SCE President Kazuo Hirai details why the NGP, aka the PSP2, is a handheld gamers will want to get their hands on.&l ... Sony's tentatively titled Next Generation Portable received a boost last night in the form of official support from two of the largest gaming software platforms around: Havok and Unreal Engine 3. Havok's physics engine has is an almost ubiquitous feature in most genres, and the company's animation products are also gaining ground. The provider also announced in November that it would be creating a lower-priced SDK for its products for smaller developers. "Havok's suite of tools and targeted optimization for NGP will ensure that developers have best-of-breed production solutions on SCE's exciting new platform," said Havok MD David Coghlan. His firm's "long history" of working with Sony has resulted in a number of launch titles utilising Havok technology. Read more...
