Don't believe us? Wait until you hear the song 'Mad Dog' featured on their upcoming album, 'Arabia Mountain.' "'Mad Dog' is about playing records backwards, like in the '80s, bands like Judas Priest used subliminal messages to tell people to kill their parents and stuff like that," Black Lips singer-guitarist Cole Alexander tells Spinner sarcastically. "So it's a song that pays tribute to that era." (Spinner thought the messages urged the band's fans to kill themselves, but maybe Black Lips' tape player had evil urges of its own.) Strangely, though, Black Lips chose brash, bling-loving pop star Ke$ha for their little physiological experiment with wax. "It's not a sample; we just sang one of her songs backwards just to be funny," says Alexander. "Well, actually, we sang it forward but it was played backwards -- that's technology." "What's 'Mad Dog' backwards?" asks lead guitarist Ian St. Pe, flashing a wide grin. "God Dam." They say nothing divides opinion quite like Marmite, but tribute bands certainly give our yeast-based paste a run for its money. Sometimes a musician starts off in one direction and then goes in another. Alex Skolnick has to be one of the most unique examples of the latter. The guitarist joined the thrash-metal band Testament when his was 16, immediately putting him on tours with arena acts like Judas Priest, Megadeath, White Zombie and Slayer. Within a few years he began to wonder if there was more out there for him as a musician. "When we recorded the third Testament album, we did it at the Fantasy Studios in Berkeley," Skolnick tells Spinner. "I remember being on break and hearing the most amazing saxophone playing I've ever heard in my life. It was scary it was going so many places. I hadn't been that blown away since I heard Eddie Van Halen do 'Eruption.' I had my ear to the door of this studio and I didn't know who was inside, or whether it was even a live band." Songs from the live LP were recorded in Japan during the band's 1979 'Hell Bent for Leather Tour,' which featured the band playing more commercial heavy metal while suddenly embracing studs and leather. While the band's leather attire would be associated with testosterone-fueled metal and biker subculture, years later lead singer Rob Halford -- who publicly pronounced his homosexuality in 1998 -- said the fashion was more influenced by gay S&M clubs. **Next** Filed under: News, Coming Out Stories Heavy metal titans Judas Priest announced earlier this month that their forthcoming world tour will be their final go-round. But it was another statement made by their frontman, Rob Halford -- years ago -- that had a much more profound effect on their audience and, indeed, their genre altogether. In 1998, Halford outed himself on MTV News, publicly declaring his homosexuality. While coming out is an act of bravery regardless of profession, Halford was plunging himself into unchartered waters as far as heavy metal was concerned. Nicknamed the "Metal God," his audience appeared to be largely populated by rowdy, young heterosexual men. Furthermore, heavy metal in the previous decade was often criticized for its misogynistic portrayal of women, sometimes depicting them as subservient sexual objects.
