Nispel is keeping the plot close to his vest, allowing only that it involves paranoia, possession and the paranormal. New York Times film critic Dave Kehr calls the film — Watchmaker Films issued "The Whole Shootin' Match" as a DVD box set with 44-page booklet and accompanying documentary in 2009 — a "template for the typical Sundance movie."
