In the end, there's no real risk-taking, just adherence to a tried and tested method. Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga harass Kristen Wiig in the Saturday Night Live sketch titled, Liquorville. The 30-year-old entertainer reprised his famous "Bring it on Down" sketch, where he dressed as a beer bottle, Lady Gaga as a wine bottle, and Kristin Wiig as a tea bag! The three end up singing parodies of other songs, which [...] New York Post: > Hell-bent on preserving his legacy, legendary Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. is developing a Broadway musical based on his life to set the record straight on the inception of the iconic label. > > Sources say Gordy has been quietly working with former Universal Music CEO Doug Morris and "Rent" producer Kevin McCollum on the autobiographical story, which will be set against the backdrop of the 1960s civil rights movement and feature a score of Motown classics. > > We hear Gordy, 81, has a $100 million budget in sight. "Berry's been wanting to do this for a long time. He's got the money and investors lined up," a source said. "He's trying to involve Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson." The show's press agent, Adrian Bryan-Brown,said there's no timetable for the production yet. > > "This is Berry's chance to set the record straight," a source said, referring to some of the darker tales of his past. > > Sources say Gordy has also sought to block attempts to produce a Marvin Gaye biopic, fearing it might depict him in a negative light. Directors F. Gary Gray and Cameron Crowe called it "impossible" last month to ... The entire Ross clan came out to support their sister Chudney for the grand opening for her new store Books & Cookies… Flip through to peep some of Diana's seeds…. share: digg facebook twitter Women have played a major role in the evolution and development of rock 'n' roll, says Jim Henke, vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, especially during the early years, people think of it as being a male- dominated form. A lot of people don't realize that. Since its inception, one often tacit yet ubiquitous theme of rock 'n' roll has been its depiction and perception of women as objects of sexual temptation and fantasy. Some of the exhibit's featured artists, like Debbie Harry and Madonna, cunningly toyed with their images and gender roles; others, like Diana Ross and Stevie Nicks, asserted their femininity in more discreet but no less iconic ways. Keri Hilson and Rihanna are two of the many stars who came out to support the fight against Leukemia at the 5th Annual DKMS Gala at Cipriani Wall Street last night. Both ladies looked lovely but if you had to Carmelo Anthony has found a home in Manhattan. The Knicks star is moving into the former recording studio used by Notorious B.I.G., according to the NY POST. It makes my skin crawl when someone uses the euphemism, "reach out"; as in, " we wanted to reach out to you making you aware of our new product" or "we've reached out to John Doe to join us for our meeting on the 30th". Ugh! "Reach out" implies a intimate yearning for human connection that I just don't think the average PR flack/corporate hack/busy executive, oh let's not mince words - corporate tool - sincerely means when they sprinkle it in every other e-mail/twitter/voicemail/conversation. Let me be clear, it's obnoxious. Unless you like coming across as insincere and affected, then ignore my plea and keep "reaching out". Otherwise, enough already! I don't know what has brought this on in recent years. Perhaps, its a pathetic attempt to infuse a little human warmth in our otherwise chilly impersonal electronic communications. That's my theory, for what it's worth. In the meantime, here's a couple of key milestones in the history of "reach out", the cliche: **1970 - "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)"** Diana Ross made this her first solo single after leaving the Supremes. It was written by Motown songwriting duo, Ashford and Simpson. As syrupy sweet as it was, it only got to #20 on the pop charts. Regardless, Ross made it a concert standard for decades. I remember seeing her perform it at the Erwin Center in Austin, TX in 1983. It was a big audience participation number requiring strangers to hold hands and sway to the beat, while small children were brought up on stage to do the same with Ross. Yes, syrupy sweet. But, I was there and somehow it didn't cross the line to saccharine. There was still hope at this point. **Late 1970's - Bell Systems debuts "Reach Out and Touch Someone" television ad campaign** It has to be one of the most famous, if not hum-able, television jingles of all time; "reach out, reach out and touch someone. Reach out, reach out and just say 'hi'." Most remember it as an AT&T ad. AT&T actually inherited the jingle after the break-up of the Bells and ran it even further into the ground during the 80's. The first Bell ad literally featured happy campers parting ways all smiles knowing friendship would endure by just phoning it in once in awhile. Who knew this was an innocent foreshadowing of the coming death of sincere interpersonal communications? Diana Ross's Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive and ABBA'S Dancing Queen The engineer won seven Grammys and also worked with Placido Domingo and Diana Ross. share: digg facebook twitter While I've disliked recent trends in pop music, I love the classic artists like Elton John, Joni Mitchell, and Stevie Wonder, and with 22 top ten tracks and 31 top ten albums, I thinks it's fair to say The Tempts qualify. [...] 1966, Kendricks sang most of the lead vocals and the songs were largely produced and written by Smokey Robinson. Songs with Ruffin performed well on the charts and he sang lead on many of the group's biggest hits including "My Girl," "All I Need," and "I Wish It Would Rain" all under the supervision of the group's new producer. Songs like these, combined with songs in the more traditional Motown style, were a sound now called "Psychedelic Soul" and it was not limited to The Temptations; similar changes can be heard in the music of Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. Edwards was a fine replacement for Ruffin but Williams, who suffered from sickle-cell disease and alchoholism, had to have someone else (former Distant, Richard Street) sing his parts live and ultimately stop touring altogether. The one surviving member of the Classic Five, Otis Williams, continues to tour with ... Lead singer for the Marvelettes on hits including Please Mr Postman, Motown's first No 1 For many young pop fans at the beginning of the 1960s, the voice of Gladys Horton represented their introduction to Motown music. Horton, who has died aged 65, was the 15-year-old lead singer of the Marvelettes when they recorded Please Mr Postman at their first session for Berry Gordy Jr's fledgling group of labels. The combination of her raw, girlish urgency and an extraordinarily catchy song gave the ambitious company the first of the many No 1 hits it would accumulate over the next decade. The Marvelettes' overnight success briefly put the teenaged schoolfriends from a Detroit suburb at the top of Motown's highly competitive pecking order, and Horton went on to sing on further hits by the group, such as Playboy, Beechwood 4-5789, He's a Good Guy (Yes He Is) and Too Many Fish in the Sea. The lead vocals on their later hits, such as Don't Mess With Bill, The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game and When You're Young and in Love, were taken by Wanda Young, another member of the group, with a smoother, more intimate delivery. Greater ... For 90 years, as many as 4,000 students at a time -- ranging from John DeLorean and Ron Carter to Ellen Burstyn and Diana Ross -- attended Cass Technical High School. But it was closed six years ago after a new school was built next-door and is perilously close to demolition. Filed under: News AP, WireImage With a rundown Detroit high school under the wrecking ball, members of a lengthy list of prominent alumni are trying to save it, according to NPR.
