Osama bin Laden is dead. Can Americans experience a moment of national unity without waving a bloody shirt? Dr Howard Stoate sets the record straight, showing that David Cameron was wrong, as well as patronising, at PMQs (Response, 29 April). However, Dr Stoate's explanation goes much further in undermining the justification for the health and social care bill, which is claimed to be that of giving a bigger role for clinicians in deciding the services which should be provided. What he and his colleagues in Bexley have been doing over the past few years is being replicated in many other parts of the country, showing that we do not need this costly and disruptive upheaval to achieve it. The real reason for the bill is to allow unfettered access for the private sector, turning an integrated service into one where competition on a commercial basis is the driving force. There is no evidence that this is what the people of this country want so the bill must be opposed, not cosmetically adjusted, by all who value the concept of a National Health Service. **Peter Fisher** _President, NHS Consultants' Association_ • On Friday, as part of my royal-marriage avoidance strategy, I looked again at Hayek's The Constitution of Liberty to see if I could gain ... Do you dream of helping others when you "make it big"? Do you imagine all of the good that you can do once you have no money woes whatsoever? I think this quality is a universal character trait for entrepreneurs. It's one of the things that motivate and keep our imaginations happy. But do we really have to wait until we've hit the jackpot to give back? Nope. Not according to fashion designer, Julia Fiske we don't. Julia spoke at Tory Johnson's recent Chicago Spark and Hustle event and I was taken with her passion, creativity and the power of her message. Her company, Save the Ta-tas®, donates at least 25% of their proceeds to support the fight against breast cancer. This money goes directly to the cause; Save the Ta-tas® is currently providing salary support for breast cancer researchers. In addition to succeeding in that rather aggressive goal, Julia's company has donated a much needed piece of medical equipment to Northwestern University. All of this is achieved through the sale of Julia's original apparel and accessory designs targeted at raising breast cancer awareness. As a start up in 2004, Julia chose to leverage her ... 1821 original may get rewrite to banish downbeat sentiments as country flexes growing economic muscles As a national anthem it is not exactly a morale booster. "For a long time, the oppressed Peruvian dragged the ominous chain," it begins. "Condemned to cruel servitude ... he quietly whimpered." The dirge continues with laments about indolence, humiliation, slavery and horror until the oppressed Peruvian, if he or she is still listening, may want to reach for an antidepressant. It is a sharp contrast to the likes of Britain's God Save the Queen - which in the first verse invokes nobility, victory, glory and happiness - or the rousing call to arms of France's La Marseillaise. But now, almost two centuries after Peru's original was penned, the country may get a more upbeat anthem designed to instil pride and reflect its growing economic clout. A campaign headed by Julio Cesar Rivera, a retired government auditor, is lobbying to replace the lyric with three new verses. "Our existing hymn is too negative," he said. "It damages the self-esteem of the population and breeds an inferiority complex. It encourages conformism, indifference and apathy - and we're already too submissive." Leading conservative law firms say they're eager to defend the 1996 law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman, but that may not be so easy. Could a conservative firm like Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based group that often opposes the administration, be the stand-in for the U.S. attorney general before a judge hearing DOMA challenges? "That's what we're pursuing," said Mathew Staver, founder of the firm and dean of Liberty University School of Law. "Somebody has to step in and do the job when the attorney general and the president will abandon theirs." Liberty Counsel had filed friend-of-the-court briefs in two DOMA court cases and is now strategizing with members of Congress to intervene on their behalf to defend the law that bans federal recognition of same-sex marriages.
