(Telecompaper) Book retailer Barnes & Noble's line of Nook eReading devices has become the bestseller in the company's nearly 40-year history with millions already sold. The Nookcolor Reader's Tablet was introduced eight weeks before Christmas and is the company's number one selling gift of the holiday season. Barnes & Noble also declared that it now sells more digital books than its physical book business on its online bookstore. Demand for the Nookcolor remained high following the product's introduction in late October through the holidays. The company also witnessed sales for its 3G and Wi-Fi devices, which feature an E Ink display and a colour touchscreen for navigation. The company also reported record holiday sales from its 2 million title catalogue, including nearly 1 million Nookbooks purchased and downloaded on Christmas Day alone. Through Barnes & Noble's eReading offerings, customers can buy and read their Nookbooks on range of platforms, including Nookcolor, Nook 3G, Wi-Fi and using Nook applications on devices including iPad, iPhone and Android smartphones. The New Year began on a bright note for investors with markets posting significant highs. The motives of Jared Lee Loughner, the shooter who killed six people this week in Tuscon, AZ, are still largely unknown. That hasn't stopped people from guessing. While most of the guesses are politically inspired, some are blaming it on the occult, thanks to a collection of items found in Loughner's back yard. As pictured on patheos.com, Loughner's backyard includes a small nook holding potting soil, plastic plant pots, three candles, a tray, what appears to be a plastic skull, and what the article identifies as rotten oranges. According to the NY Daily News, these are elements of occult rituals. First off, skulls aren't nearly as useful in occult rituals as Hollywood makes them out to be. But this isn't even a skull. It appears to be a plastic skull. What self-respecting occultist is going to use a Halloween prop? Yes, candles are common elements of occult rituals. And Christian rituals. And Hanukkah celebrations. And romantic evenings at home. There's nothing noteworthy about Loughner's candles. They aren't specially marked or ritually placed. They're just sitting there, just as candles sit in many people's homes. Yet the NY Daily News labels them "ceremonial candles." And while, yes, the ... In my November 2010 TechnoFiles column " The Trouble with E-Readers ," I point out that electronic books are still far too crude to replace ink and paper. But if you've jumped into the e-book world, you'll get more mileage from your money if you're aware of these tricks. * Buy the books, not the readers. You can read Kindle and Nook books on your Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad or Android phone; you don't have to buy an actual Kindle or Nook. Amazon and Barnes & Noble have each written e-book reading programs for those machines that work very well--and even synchronize your bookmarks, notes and "where I stopped" among devices. [More] Amazon yesterday began letting Kindle users lend their e-books to friends -- but only once per book, and only for 14 days. Previously, the only way Kindle books could be shared was by handing over the entire device. Adopting a policy identical to that of Barnes & Noble's Nook, Amazon... Author's note: The following excerpt is the Introduction to my new book The Belief Instinct: The Psychology of Souls, Destiny and the Meaning of Life . God came from an egg. At least, that's how He came to me. Don't get me wrong, it was a very fancy egg. More specifically, it was an ersatz Faberge egg decorated with colorful scenes from the Orient. Now about two dozen years before the episode I'm about to describe, somewhere in continental Europe, this particular egg was shunted through the vent of an irritable hen, pierced with a needle and drained of its yolk, and held in the palm of a nimble artist who, for hours upon hours, painstakingly hand-painted it with elaborate images of a stereotypical Asian society. The artist, who specialized in such kitsch materials, then sold the egg along with similar wares to a local vendor, who placed it carefully in the front window of a side-street souvenir shop. Here it eventually caught the eye of a young German girl, who coveted it, purchased it, and after some time admiring it in her apartment against the backdrop of the Black Forest, wrapped it in ... Barnes & Noble e-reader mod boots from an SD card and doesn't alter the native Android operating system. Today Barnes & Noble announced the Nook Color, an Android powered e-reader tablet with a 7-inch touchscreen. The Nook Color offers 8GB of storage, a 1024 x 600 pixel display, and a few apps such as Pandora and Sudoku.
