Iomega has launched its new Iomega StorCenter PX Series of network storage products, Iomega's most advanced series of desktop and rackmount NAS devices created specifically for high performance use at small-to medium-sized businesses and distributed enterprises. (Telecompaper) Chinese social network Renren raised USD 743.4 million in its initial public offering of shares in New York. The company priced the 53.1 million American depositary shares on offer at USD 14 each, and the ADS started trading on the New York Stock Exchange on 4 May. Renren offered 42.9 million shares, and the remainder came from selling shareholders. The company has granted the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 7.965 million ADS at the initial public offering price to cover over- allotments, if any. Renren's shares finished their first day of trading up almost 30 percent from the offering price. We psychotherapists believe patients should be given a choice of treatment. Often there isn't one John Crace criticises those who rail against the use of antidepressants (Thank you for the tablets, 8 April). But having spent more than 20 years as a psychotherapist, I've never come across anyone who believes there is no place at all for medication in the treatment of acute mental/emotional suffering. And no colleague has come close to saying "the worst thing that could happen to someone is to be prescribed antidepressants". What I and other psychotherapists do question is our society's increasing reliance on drugs to deal with virtually any form of misery or distress. Not everyone is going through the kind of serious states of mind that Crace describes. One doesn't have to believe in any kind of conspiracy among doctors and "Big Pharma" to understand why hard-pressed GPs are handing out drugs to anxious and unhappy patients. Surely our response can be better than this? Crace claims: "Few doctors prescribe antidepressants without pointing their patients in the direction of some kind of therapy as well." But often there are no services on offer. And it's just not true to ... It's showtime for broadcast pilots as screenings at the networks are kicking off. Today was Day 1 of screenings at ABC, Fox and the CW and Day 4 for CBS, which started on Friday. NBC starts its viewing tomorrow. There were a couple of standouts today. At ABC, it seems to be the Mark Gordon-produced procedural**_ IDENTITY_** starring Angela Bassett as the head of a unit fighting identity-related crime, which got rave reviews. While not getting the same level of enthusiastic response, several other ABC pilots had solid showings:dramas **_CHARLIE'S ANGELS_**, which is considered a lock, **_POE_**, said to be a favorite of ABC chief Paul Lee (though some are concerned that it is essentially a 1840s _Castle_ with a supernatural twist) and comedy _**SMOTHERED**_, while reaction to Chris Moynihan's comedy _**MAN UP**_ was mixed. It was a ho-hum first screening day at Fox, with comedy **_I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER _**doing OK, drama **_ALCATRAZ_** getting mixed reaction, mostly because of its sci-fi content, and comedy**_ TAGGED _**not faring well. At the CW, the rise**_ HART OF DIXIE_** continued with a great screening as the small town medical drama starring Rachel Bilson looks like a ... Over the last few days, online gamers who use the Sony PlayStation Network and subscribers to Sony's Qriocity music and video services have learned some disturbing news: A "criminal cyber-attack" last month on Sony's San Diego data center laid open the sensitive personal information of tens of millions of Sony customers, exposing them to identity theft and other data crimes. Under new Comcast ownership, NBCUniversal is investing $200 million more into developing hit NBC prime-time shows in 2011 than it did in 2010 to pull the broadcast network out of the ratings cellar. WASHINGTON - The data breach of Sony's PlayStation Network resulted from a "very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack designed to steal personal and credit-card information for illegal purposes," a Sony executive says. share: digg facebook twitter Bharti has struggled to profitably integrate the Africa assets of Kuwaiti cell phone operator Zain since it acquired them for $10.7 billion last June, becoming the fifth-largest telecom operator in the world by subscribers in one of the largest cross-border deals in Indian history. "There are big structural defects in the Africa telecom industry, which lead to very high costs of doing business," said Akhil Gupta, deputy chief executive of the Bharti group. Executives said strict know-your-customer norms, supply constraints at network operators in Africa, and disappointing 3G launches in seven African countries had slowed growth. Bharti is hoping to mirror its low-cost Indian business model across Africa, outsourcing most functions to keep costs ultra-low. Manoj Kohli, who heads Bharti's international business, said 800 employees have been transferred to partners Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and IBM, as Bharti nails down its network and information technology operations in Africa. Saturday's pay-per-view bout featuring Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley could one day pave the way for boxing's return to network television. Iomega has debuted a new line of StorCenter PX HDD and solid-state compatible network storage devices in both desktop and rackmount styles aimed specifically at small- and medium-sized businesses, remote offices and distributed enterprises -- each certified for VMWare, Citrix and Windows Server. The units sport dual-core Intel processors and storage capacities up to 18TB in the desktop form factor and 12TB in a rackmount array. The lineup features advanced data protection, flexible storage configurations and Iomega's Personal Cloud technology.... Eight football games a year on Thursday or Friday nights. This word has appeared in 159 New York Times articles in the past year. She has previously worked for CBS, … Continue reading -> With the _Bones_ pickup out of the way, attention focuses on the other Fox drama embroiled in a renewal drama, _House_. After a string of deadlines came and went, including one last Friday and another one this Monday, there is still no deal but I hear the hope is to wrap the renewal up by early next week when Fox brass will start piecing together the network's schedule for next season. It won't be an easy task as Fox and _House _producer Universal Media Studios are still apart on the license fee by about 20%. That's by how much I hear Fox wants to cut the series' current license fee to about $5 million per episode next season. At this point in a series' run (_House _will be entering its 8th season in the fall), the network license fee normally covers the cost of production. But I hear UMS cannot produce _House_ in its current form for $5 million an episode, so it has been unwilling to accept a reduced license fee as it faces the possibility to have to deficit finance a show in its eighth season, something studios rarely do. But ... US President Obama has decided not to release photographs of Osama bin Laden's body, CBS News reported on Wednesday. Mr. Obama apparently concluded that images of Bin Laden bloodied by gunshots would do little to reassure skeptics but could inflame tensions in the Muslim world. He disclosed his decision in an interview for the CBS program 60 Minutes, portions of which will be broadcast on the network's evening news programs Wednesday. Network breaches as a result of employees using social media and mobile phone security keep network administrators up at night. - Security breaches and Network security threats posed by social media and smartphone use at work are keeping network administrators up at night, according to a recent survey. In the latest What Keeps Network Administrators Up at Night survey from Amplitude Research, 41 percent of respondents named s... Isis, the collaborative mobile payments venture initiated by three major U.S. telecom carriers, is scaling back its efforts to compete with the credit card industry. Created in a joint effort by T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, Isis first aimed to allow customers to pay for purchases at retailers by using their smartphones, with a network of payments [...] (Telecompaper) The New Zealand Commerce Commission has lowered mobile termination rates. Termination rates for calls will drop to less than NZD 0.04 cents by 1 April 2012, with further reductions until 2014. Termination rates for text messages will drop to NZD 0.06 cents from 6 May this year and voice call termination rates for this year are set at NZD 0.0748. The Commission expressed its concern about the extend to which the price of calls and text messages between people on different networks are significantly higher than calls and text messages between people on the same network. These price differences create significant barriers for the new entry and growth of small mobile operators in the mobile market, Commissioner Ross Patterson said. While the Commission expects reduction in wholesale termination rates for calls and text messages to resolve this problem, it will be monitoring this situation closely, including publishing monthly reports, and is prepared to move quickly to limit these price differences if required. PAC-10 commissioner Larry Scott announces the launch of the conference's own television network and a joint 12-year deal with ESPN and Fox that's the richest in college sports at a hefty $3 billion. Lawmakers criticize Sony for its actions in the aftermath of breaches of its PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment service.
