Hitler's looting of artworks was not exceptional. The quest to find them is really an expression of revulsion at his true crimes A troubling detail caught my eye in the new online archive of documents relating to art works looted by the Nazis. At the first meeting of the British Committee on the Preservation and Restitution of Works of Art in 1944, the critic Kenneth Clark "drew attention to the reported destruction of churches such as San Francesco at Arezzo", which, he said, "suggested that our bombing was not always accurate". Clark's warning seems to have fallen on deaf ears – it just hangs there in the document, a footnote to the committee's plans to hound German art thieves and their collaborators. But he was right. British and American bombing strategists paid little attention to the safety of cultural treasures in 1944 and 1945. As a result they destroyed infinitely precious works of art, including an entire fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli in Pisa and masterpieces by Caravaggio and Courbet in German museums. This archive has not been created to mourn those casualties of war. It is part of a pursuit of Nazi art looters and ... Apple is working towards building yet more retail stores in New York City and around the French town of Versailles, reports say. In New York City Apple is said to be scouting a space in Manhattan, particularly within Grand Central Terminal at Park and East 42nd. An outlet there would be less than a mile from Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store, allegedly by design, in order to reduce the intense amount of foot traffic the latter generates.... I was a little disappointed in you folks last week, most of you anyway, because I really would have thought more people knew more about the great song standards. I really urge you – you're depriving yourselves of beauty. I also don't understand this antipathy to musicals. Sure, people don't break into song in real life. So what? Real life also doesn't include vampires, ghosts, time travel, journeys to other galaxies, hastily resolved happy endings, unbelievably hot members of the opposite (or shall I say one's preferred) sex throwing themselves at our feet, and a jillion other things that appear in movies all the time. I bet you don't turn your nose up at those. Whatever. This week we take on a less esoteric subject, a very standard sort of Jeopardy! category kind of topic: the history of France. Glorious France! England's old foe. America's old friend. Incubator of so much that we treasure, and some stuff that sucks. Home base of liberty, equality and fraternity; of political terror; of empire and instability; of heavy cream and crisp Sancerres; you get the drift. I haven't been out and about in France much. Paris of course. ... VERSAILLES, France, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Rinderpest, a disease that decimated cattle herds for centuries, will officially be history this coming June, a United Nations official said Monday in New York. Nearly 40 years ago, the U.S. and France staged the couture equivalent of a throw-down at the Palace of Versailles. The result sent seismic waves through the fashion world, largely because of the presence of several black models who walked for the American designers. They don't call it a queen bed for nothing. Who hasn't dreamed of sleeping like royalty? Now, your dreams are coming true. A historic mansion near the Château de Versailles is being renovated into a luxury hotel. Workers at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Ky., with the mare Zenyatta, who lost only one time in a three-year racing career. Nicolas Sarkozy's plan to rent out L'hôtel de la Marine on Place de la Concorde, linked to the revolution, angers historians Paris boasts so many historic monuments it has been called a living museum. But now Nicolas Sarkozy is under attack for seeking to sell the capital's heritage to luxury hotel chains. Historians are outraged at government plans to rent out one of France's most important palaces, L'hôtel de la Marine on Place de La Concorde. A symbol of the nation's bloody history, the palace was the site of the first riots that led to the French revolution in 1789. King Louis XVI and Marie- Antoinette were guillotined outside it. Designed by the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, it is one of the best examples of 18th-century royal architecture and its intact collection of furniture and decor is unrivalled, even by the palace of Versailles. But the state-owned building could be transformed into luxury boutiques, plush suites for billionaires or a hotel with swimming pool. Last month a discreet advert was posted on the site of the French budget ministry advertising the building for long-term lease to private firms which will be encouraged to renovate it. The French navy, based ...
