Woody Allen once said that "80 percent of life is showing up." Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum sure believes it. He was the only potential presidential candidate to accept the South Carolina GOP's invitation to its annual Silver Elephant fund-raising dinner Friday, a day after the first debate of the 2012 primary campaign. Byron York is not some conservative squish. He's an able footsoldier, a veteran character assassin and dyed-in-the-wool conservative. So when he writes about GOP despair with their 2012 choices, it's worth a listen. It's not just dissatisfaction with the field -- Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, and Gary Johnson -- that took [...] COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) - Republican Rick Santorum got credit for showing up and won a 2012 presidential straw poll of party activists in the crucial early voting state of South Carolina, organizers said on Saturday. CBS News politics correspondent Jan Crawford spoke with former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain after the first Republican presidential debate Thursday night in South Carolina. A Fox News focus group concluded Cain came out on top against Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum. Cain told Crawford he resonates with voters because they can understand him. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum would be dropped on May 1 unless they notified the network that they were not running for president. Once the presidential primary race is underway and real candidates begin to perform under pressure, the conventional wisdom spun by pundits and operatives begins to crumble. We saw last night, although the chattering class might not have realized it, that much of what the pundits have been saying simply isn't so. **"You can't attack Obama on foreign policy."** Actually, a surprisingly large amount of the debate was about foreign policy. An isolationist (Rep. Ron Paul, former governor Gary Johnson), in the wake of the Osama bin Laden killing, seems far less credible than Obama as a potential commander in chief (as Rick Santorum pointed out, without the Afghanistan war we wouldn't have nabbed the 9/11 mastermind). But it certainly _is_ possible to attack Obama from the right on foreign policy, as Tim Pawlenty did in his opening answer: Read full article >> Fox News moderators asked tough questions. Two out of five candidates on the stage were anti-war. Welcome to the debate different. It has been surprisingly interesting and impressive. Most of the big names aren't participating, but the quality of the discussion has been high. Rick Santorum, Herman Cain and Gary Johnson have all done pretty well, and even Ron Paul hasn't been as obnoxious as usual. But the main story, I think, is Tim Pawlenty's strong performance. Pawlenty is the top candidate participating in this debate, and he seized control of the podium from the beginning. Pawlenty has knocked one question after another out of the park, like a major leaguer taking batting practice in a AA field. We should note, too, that the Fox News personalities who are asking the questions are doing a fine job. The debate has been a solid, high-level, substantive and collegial discussion of the issues. Not many outside the hard core are watching, of course, but we can hope that this beginning bodes well for the upcoming campaign. UPDATE: No sooner had I praised the event than it went downhill. A long detour through the social issues was less than edifying. One hopes the discussion will get back ... Fox News Channel has terminated the contracts of paid contributors and potential 2012 candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, a spokesman for the network confirmed to CNN.
