The deed will be done soon, as on June 8, after almost five years (she started cohosting with Matt Lauer in September 2006). NEW YORK, May 9 (UPI) -- Meredith Vieira announced Monday she is leaving "Today," an NBC morning news program that tapes in New York, after five years as co-host. During a press conference held by NBC News at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on Monday, following the announcement that Meredith Vieira will be leaving the "Today" show, her co-anchor Matt Lauer dismissed rumors that he will soon be following Vieira out the door. Monday on NBC's "Today," Meredith Vieira made an emotional announcement that she will leave the morning show in June, with Ann Curry taking over as co- anchor. At a press conference today discussing the pending anchor switchover on NBC's _Today_ triggered by the upcoming departure of Meredith Vieira, co-host Matt Lauer addressed speculation that he might join former_ Today_ cohort Katie Couric on her potential syndicated talk show. "We certainly spoke about the possibility, but we've talked about a lot of possibilities over the years," Lauer said, according to press reports. "It turned into just talk. And that's where we left it. It's not going to happen." Word is those overtures to Lauer infuriated NBC brass and led to the network pulling out from contention for the Couric talker. As for the rumors that one way or another Lauer may be leaving _Today _when his contract is up in December 2012 or even sooner, "I have a long-term deal with NBC News," he said. "I'm going to be here for a while. You're going to get sick of me." Vieira also addressed rumors, this time that she was leaving _Today _to help her ailing husband, author Richard Cohen, who had been battling cancer and MS. "There's so much speculation in the press: Poor Meredith with her invalid husband," she said. "I ... She recently made the decision to say goodbye to her gig on the "Today" show, and Meredith Vieira has since opened up about her reasons for leaving. In a press conference on Monday (May 9), the 57-year-old said that her family was a major force behind her decision to pull the plug on her co-hosting efforts. "I was extremely torn because I love it here," she said. "But I had personal issues that were weighing on me and I felt that I really needed to examine them closely and make a decision based on them. I went back and forth and back and forth. It was really at the last minute that I had to go with my gut, and I know that it's the right thing, but it doesn't make it any easier." As for the rumor claiming that Meredith was leaving because of her husband and his battle with multiple sclerosis, she explained, "There's so much speculation in the press recently about 'poor Meredith and her invalid husband,' and I want to set the record straight on that. My husband Richard is in good health and that's part of the reason ...
