share: digg facebook twitter WASHINGTON (AP) — The devastating tornadoes that swept across Alabama and other southern states Wednesday caused widespread power outages, shut down several large manufacturing plants and could disrupt the region's fragile economic recovery. If those parts suppliers are badly damaged, auto production in the region could face a longer disruption. The tornado damage compounds troubles for the auto industry, which is already experiencing parts shortages from factories in Japan that were damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Managers at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Tuscaloosa County, Ala., decided to stop car and truck production and send workers home Wednesday night so they could help friends and family members deal with the tornado damage, said Felyicia Jerald, spokeswoman for the factory about 30 miles from Tuscaloosa. [...] parts supply companies in the area are without electricity, so the company plans to keep the factory closed until Monday. A Toyota Motor Co. engine plant in Huntsville, Ala., which employs about 800 people, shut down last night and will stay closed through Friday, a company spokesman said. Separately, Alabama's agriculture commissioner said the tornadoes and storms caused multi-million-dollar damage to the poultry industry in north ... Ordinary Yemenis are suffering as food and fuel prices rise – and aid programmes are desperately short of funds Political unrest in Yemen continues. But for ordinary people, life must go on against a backdrop of escalating food and fuel prices, and growing hardship. Jasmeen (not her real name) is a cleaner living in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. She is desperately worried about the current situation, she says. High food and fuel prices mean Jasmeen and her family often only eat one meal a day; usually either bread or rice. She can no longer afford luxuries such as beans or eggs. She says she has recently heard a rumour that food prices are soon to drop and is clinging to that hope. Otherwise, Jasmeen mournfully tells Oxfam, she is not sure how she and her six children will survive once the small supply of grain, rice, oil, and sugar she has stockpiled runs out. I am worried that Jasmeen's hope of lower prices is misplaced. Rises in the price of most staple goods show no signs of abating under current political and economic pressures. The recent harvest has helped ease things in the short term, and ... There's been a fair amount of talk this session about examining different types of tax exemptions, all of which combine to cost Texas billions in revenue, but there's one type of exemption for which I have not seen any discussion: Tax breaks for agriculture. There's an awful lot of property in Texas that get large [...] Family Dollar names VP of real estate development Pretty much every major city in the UK now has its own 'urban festival' and Leeds is no exception. A statement from the Harman family: > Sidney Harman died last night of complications from acute myeloid leukemia at the young age of almost 93. He first learned of his illness one month ago and remained vigorously engaged as Executive Chairman of Newsweek, and Chairman of the Academy for Polymathic Study at the University of Southern California. He died in Washington, D.C., a city he loved and supported in so many ways, surrounded by his wife and children. Funeral arrangements will be private. Celebrations of Sidney's extraordinary life will be held both in Washington and Los Angeles, at dates still to be determined. The Daily Beast: > A little less than a year ago I picked up my phone one day at Newsweek and a man at the other end identified himself as Sidney Harman. He told me that his rich friends all thought he was crazy but he intended to buy the magazine from the Washington Post Company. > > I was intrigued by Sidney's ideas and, like so many who encountered him, soon enough impressed at his charm and astonishing vigor. (AP) — Three months after Charles O'Shields' son was killed in an argument over a woman, the grieving father found the man charged with his death at a Dollar General store in the North Carolina mountains. Authorities say O'Shields gunned Toby Mathis down among the aisles of cheap merchandise last week and then fled in a getaway car driven by his sister. The local sheriff hopes the surrender ends a feud that has created a body count equal to what the sparsely populated county considers a violent year. [...] to some of O'Shields' friends, it was a case of mountain justice — a man getting his revenge after deciding he had enough sneering about his son's death. The acrimony first turned deadly on a twisty mountain road in December when 20 -year-old Joey O'Shields went to confront his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. Mathis had been sending him nasty text messages and taunting him in places where he would hang out, said Kim Lambrecht, the younger O'Shields' mother. Several members of Mathis' family did not return phone calls from The Associated Press and were not home Tuesday when a reporter visited. Evidence leaves no doubt ... Family Dollar Stores recently posted second-quarter 2011 results. A positive sentiment is palpable among analysts, following the earnings release. Management now expects a growth of 8% to 10% in net sales, 5% to 7% in comparable-store sales and 19.5% to 23.3% in earnings per share for fiscal 2011. btr1701 points us to a report from Thursday's (_not_ April Fool's Day) Variety, which claims that the movie studios are getting ready to offer _$30 dollar per movie_ Video On Demand (VOD) offerings. This is a classically short-sighted Hollywood-type of solution. Over the past few years, the big movie studios have become even more enamored than ever with the concept of release "windows," in which they offer movies on different platforms/formats at different times. Rather than moving in the other direction, towards so- called "day and date" releases that offer up movies on all platforms at once, they're trying to make the whole thing more frustrating and annoying for customers by spreading things out and offering more windows. This explains the recent efforts to delay various movie rental releases and the whole plan to break your DVR/TV so that you can't actually record certain VOD showings. Now that they have these in place, apparently they think the answer is to offer this new window, between theater showings and when you can rent from Netflix or your video store of choice, in which they somehow think people will be okay _paying $30 per movie_.
