A bill that would require colleges to let students carry concealed weapons on campus in Texas is a step closer to reality after the state senate passed the bill over the objections of some lawmakers and college officials. NBC's Brian Williams reports. (Nightly News) Some colleges offer students the chance to attain a degree in three years in order to limit costs. This year alone an astonishing 20 states have seen "guns on campus" bills introduced. Seven have failed. Two signs law school isn't the ticket to riches it used to be for students or colleges: Drexel University has delayed plans to build a fancy new building to house its law-school program. And the University of Delaware has canceled a proposal for a law school of its own. BOULDER, Colo. STUDENTS have welcomed plans to merge Stevenson and Jewel & Esk colleges to create a new "super college" in the Capital. Like many students at Anacostia Senior High School in Southeast Washington, Clifford Taylor had college dreams but no college plan. His grades were marginal. By the start of his senior year in August, he hadn't taken the SAT. Most high schools in the affluent D.C. suburbs function as college-preparatory factories. By contrast, Anacostia Senior High produces only a few dozen graduates each year with grade-point averages of 2.5 or above, a minimum standard at even minimally selective colleges. But Taylor wound up applying to six colleges, including Delaware State University, which he probably will attend. His plan came together after he connected with an adviser from a nonprofit organization that has transformed the college prospects of many D.C. students. Texas A&M maintained its eighth-place position with a 44-over 908 after the final round of the West Regional at Auburn, Wash. Baylor's Chelsey Cothran shot a 6-over 78 to finish in a tie for 96th overall. Applying to an online college can be particularly nerve-wracking. It can be difficult to know what your chosen program expects, especially if you don't know anyone who has "attended" the school. Some online colleges have relaxed admissions guidelines (i.e. everyone who applies is accepted, assuming they have a high school diploma or its equivalency). Other online programs are very selective and only accept the best of the best. Most virtual colleges fall somewhere in the middle. They're looking for students who meet basic benchmarks such as a reasonably high GPA in previous coursework and well-written application essays. Being aware of these benchmarks ahead of time can help you prepare to apply. **See Also:** * How to Request Online College Recommendation Letters * How to Write an Online College Admissions Essay How to Be the Ideal Online College Applicant originally appeared on About.com Distance Learning on Sunday, May 8th, 2011 at 00:11:10. As more colleges "outsource" courses to other organizations, traditional faculty members are beginning to worry about their jobs as well as the quality of education their students receive. A recent Inside Higher Ed article put the issue this way: > "What should a college do if the best instructor is elsewhere? Many colleges take pride in recruiting such talent, for either a semester or a career. But when a college contracts out teaching to talent at another entity, is it good educational policy or the kind of outsourcing of which many professors are dubious?" It's certainly a complex question and one that doesn't have an easy answer. On one hand, outsourcing can give students online access to teachers at the top of their field, connect them with diverse viewpoints, and ensure that the curriculum is rigorous. However, in practice, outsourcing is often practiced as a way for colleges to save money while passing along cookie-cutter courses that offer lower-level students hardly any personal attention. Perhaps the solution is to encourage colleges to use online learning as a way to offer special benefits to students rather than a solution to campus financing issues. **See Also:** * Readers Respond: ...
