(AP) -- Flowers have often come to Katherine Jackson's home throughout her lifetime and now the matriarch of one of music's most famous families is hoping a partnership with an online retailer will have some of her favorite blooms appearing on others' doorsteps.... The L: > The issue you're holding in your hands, or reading online (what up internet!), is obviously a celebration of the always vibrant music scene we're lucky to have here in our city and, specifically, in Brooklyn. There is so much that is beautiful and inspiring about what happens here every day, and we're forever grateful for it. But we're starting to think it's not all flowers and sunshine around here, that in a lot of very dangerous ways, we are being led, and are leading ourselves, astray. So with that, we turned to some local notables for their input. And lest you think we're just making everyone else do our dirty work, fine, we'll go first: So many of the young bands here seem to feel it's their god-given right to never have anyone criticize their music, that they should be praised unconditionally for summoning the guts to have left whatever shitty town they came from in the first place to make music here at all. A Ukrainian women's rights group uses topless protest and mud-wrestling to campaign against the sex industry. But does it work? It's not every day that a women's rights group from eastern Europe makes it into the Sun. But it's no surprise that the redtop made an exception for Femen last year. Its twentysomething Ukrainian campaigners regularly go topless with flowers in their hair, have worn bikinis made from surgical masks, and even mud-wrestled to draw attention to their cause, since they launched in 2008 – causing outrage among feminists and traditionalists alike. Yet today Femen's almost weekly protests are so successful it is planning to expand into Europe. Founded by Anna Hutsol, Femen began as a campaign against the explosion of prostitution and sex tourism in Ukraine (sparked by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and intensified by the arrival of budget airlines and a depressed economy). As its popularity grew, Femen took on issues as diverse as vote-rigging and the stoning sentence meted out to Iranian Sakineh Ashtiani. The next protest, on 26 April, is timed to coincide with the anniversary of Chernobyl when Russian politicians will be visiting Ukraine. Inna Shevchenko, 20, ... Message posted on overseas website and titled 'The jasmine revolution in China' prompts security crackdown Chinese security officials have questioned or detained scores of activists and warned others against staging protests after an online call was made for demonstrations in 13 cities, campaigners said. The message – posted on an overseas website on Saturday – was titled "The jasmine revolution in China". The swift crackdown underlined the anxiety of authorities in the wake of the Egypt uprising and protests across the Middle East. It came as the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, urged top officials to "improve social management capabilities", sustain order and handle online information better "to guide public opinion". The Xinhua state news agency said the meeting in Beijing was to help leaders to understand "new changes and characteristics in the domestic and international situations". Despite a huge police presence at the proposed demonstration locations, there were signs that at least a handful of people in Beijing and Shanghai had hoped to protest. It is not clear who posted the call for demonstrations on the Boxun website, and the message may well have come from abroad. Many mainland activists appeared to have been unaware of it until police contacted ... Valentine's Day is everyone's favorite holiday. Unless you're in a relationship and you have to plan a whole big thing for you… Are You Getting What You Pay for? Just over a year ago, Sarah Thomson decided to run for mayor of Toronto. The only woman in a field of male contenders, she believed she had a good shot at it for several reasons. Thomson is the publisher of the Women's Post, a print magazine for businesswomen that also has a hefty online presence. Her own background was eclectic and made for good copy. She left home at age 15, slept on strangers' sofas and on the street, panhandling and selling flowers to earn money. She started working at a gas station at age 16 and rose through the ranks to become manager and established a management company that took underperforming gas stations and made them profitable. She founded a company in Hamilton, Ontario that rehabbed houses but when she ran into obstacles due to local building codes,  she decided to run for city council.  When she lost, she decided to establish a community newspaper in Hamilton, recognizing the power of the press to influence readers. She then relocated to Toronto to seek start-up capital for a new magazine for businesswomen. When she didn't find funders, she put her own money down and launched Women's News ...
